American man arrested in Pakistani border region

PESHAWAR, Pakistan - A 20-year-old American man was arrested late Monday at a checkpoint near the Afghan border in a tribal region where Pakistani troops are fighting Taliban and al-Qaida militants, police said.

Officers were investigating what the man was doing in the border area, which is believed to be a possible hiding place for Osama bin Laden and other foreign extremists, said one officer, Pir Shahab.

He said the man — identified on his passport as Juddi Kenan — did not have permission to be in the region as is required by Pakistani law. He was arrested at a checkpoint trying to enter Mohmand agency, Shahab said.

“He is holding an American passport, which shows him as a resident of Florida,” Shahab said.

Another police official, Marjan Khan at the station in Sarrokali, said the man was wearing traditional Pakistani clothes and appeared to be a civilian. “He has told us that he was a student at a community college in Florida, and wanted to enter the tribal region to see a friend.” Khan said the man carried a laptop and a travelling bag, adding that he had been shifted to an unknown place for more questioning, also by intelligence agencies.

A U.S. embassy spokesman said he had no information on the arrest.

Asked whether he was believed to be a journalist, a tourist, a researcher, or a suspected militant, Shahab said: “These are the questions we are trying to investigate.”

Militants in the tribal regency are blamed for rising attacks in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Pakistani authorities often claim to kill or arrest foreign extremists, mostly from Afghanistan, the Middle East and Chechnya, in the area.

Interesting. Why would an American try to enter FATA area dressing as Pakistan, knowing full well sentiments against “foreigners” in the area??? He says he was going to see a friend. Anyone has more info on this?

Re: American man arrested in Pakistani border region

2 or 3 years back, Iraqi Police/Security Forces arrested two persons, wearing traditional arab dresses, having explosives in their car, they were caught red handed, when they refused to stop at a check point and opened fire on the Iraqi forces. These two men were british soldiers, they were arrested and taken to Police station for further interogation, when Brit forces raided the place and took their men.

This American guy Nowand few days ago an Indian national was arrested from the same area i guess....

i wonder if this American and that Indian were there to preach peace and harmony...

Re: American man arrested in Pakistani border region

I personally think that this guy is either a journalist or a spy. There is a more of a chance for him being a journalist cuz american spies are on the top of Pakistani security agencies and even if they capture him, "by mistake", he would be out without any other info.

Why would he not tell security forces if he was a journalist?

:) Ofcourse that I dont know but what I know is that there are many many journalists sent in this region from all over the media world, just to find out something new about this region, taliban and especially OBL.

Re: American man arrested in Pakistani border region

He is only 20 years old, not like he is an experienced spy or anything. It could be just that he was looking for a friend or is a al-queda sympathizer or could be just some hippy looking for some adventure.

Re: American man arrested in Pakistani border region

he might be "black water" active personnel, well either we will see the cover up info or something else now.

You have to be ex military, usually special forces to join black water. Most blackwater personnel are in the 30's-50's.

The minimum age to join the US military is 18, after which you undergo basic training then advanced training, so by 20 you have only 1-2 years of experience.

You really think, a 20 year old is capable of being a special operative.

Think back of when you were 20 and how mature you were.

if he is american then there are more chances of him being a spy..
most of the recruits for spy agencies are journalists worldwide they can get easy access and when caught they have valid reason to be there no matter how sensitive is the place.

PESHAWAR: The Charsadda police Tuesday released a US national who was briefly held on suspicion while entering Mohmand Agency, a source told The News.

The American consulate in Peshawar expressed ignorance about the arrest or release of any of its national from Charsadda or Mohmand Agency, while the US embassy in Islamabad said that they were in contact with the authorities after media reports to confirm the arrest of any of its nationals.

Charsadda District Police Officer (DPO) Waqif Khan told The News that Jawad Ali was released after a brief interrogation. “He is actually living with his family somewhere on Kohat Road in Peshawar, but has an American passport,” the police district chief said.

The police officer was surprised as to why media was showing keen interest in the arrest of the man that they had held during routine checking. It was learnt that the police arrested the young man, clad in traditional Pakistani dress, on Monday when he was entering tribal Mohmand Agency via Charsadda in a taxi car. Sources said the man told police that he was a student and wanted to enter Mohmand Agency on a study tour.

According to his passport, a police official said, he hails from Florida (US), but is settled in rural Peshawar for the past many years. Foreigners are not allowed without prior permission to travel to tribal areas of the country for security reasons. Every foreigner is supposed to register himself with Special Branch Police on arrival in Peshawar and seek permission of the authorities before entering the troubled tribal regions.

US national released

Re: American man arrested in Pakistani border region

every one loves the conspiracy theory

Re: American man arrested in Pakistani border region

What about his name in the first story :
Juddi Kenan
and now in this story it is Jawad Ali , what's up with that ?

Re: American man arrested in Pakistani border region

I guess he is a GS multinicker , LOL
or
Pakistani Police was bribed by him to release him and clear him of all Charges.

Seems like interference from top hierarchy to me.

A 20 year old from America is most like a "Jihadi-wanna-be", trying to get himself presented in front of the "Emir".

Daggon it! When will Pakistan be safe from 20-something UK/US Jiahdis?

Re: American man arrested in Pakistani border region

lol

so some claim he was 'black water', or an american spy, and the bush supporters claim hes a jihadi wannabe... turns out the pooer chap was just an ordinary guy, this must be immense disappointment for both camps...
