Re: Using your parent’s credit card w/out permission?
I don’t get it either  they’re your parents, not some strangers who will throw you in jail!
My parents are never into credit credits or even debit cards..they don’t trust ATM machines but when I was a teenager, I’d just reach into my dad’s wallet and grab some cash. Not a big deal. Of course I wouldn’t do it now and never to anyone else but seriously…I can’t imagine them calling it “theft”..
Re: Using your parent's credit card w/out permission?
Sounds very immature. What's wrong with asking them first? If they say no, there must be good reason for it.
Eh? What's immature about it? OP pays back and only uses it if she doesn't have it on her at that time....I don't see anyone else here who said they do it either..
Re: Using your parent's credit card w/out permission?
My mum's never had a debit card and i never knew where my dad kept his lol. Occasionally i'll borrow money from them but i always ask first and pay them back, if i forget, they don't tend to remind me.
Re: Using your parent's credit card w/out permission?
How do you take someones credit card without them knowing? obviously there is some deception involved. Then you secretly place the card back?
If your over 18 get your own card or get a joint card. On most credit card you can even add people and the card company will send out a card with their name on it.
Saying you will pay it back is no excuse. the whole point of a credit card is you pay it back later.
Re: Using your parent's credit card w/out permission?
I know I am. But in my defense, I always paid back, I just didn't have it on me or enough at the time of purchase etc. And it's never super-expensive, usually less than $45. AND I PAY BACK.
So, how did your parents react or would react if you did that? Mine tend to get annoyed that I didn't ask but I'd rather not go through the hassle of convincing them, plus I'd give it back anyway, right? Right. Their main thing is that I didn't ask for permission. And I admit that I should.
Thoughts?
Going by your orig. post...not sure which type of situation you're referring to:
Situation 1: Someone takes their parents credit/debit card without telling them. Their name is NOT on the account, and their parents are completely unaware of the fact that they have the card. I can imagine teenagers doing this..lol. This is stealing and disrespectful. Just b/c they're your parents...that doesn't make it "ok" for you to take something that specifically belongs to them without permission.
Situation 2: Parents added their child's name on their account and GAVE them a credit or debit card to use. Or the parents just gave their card to their child and are AWARE of the fact that the child is in posssession of the card. In this situation, there is no reason to ask "permission" b/c by giving the card to the child....the parents are giving permission for use of the card. Now some parents give the card with conditions attached (such as the card should be used in emergencies only, there's $$ limit etc).
So which situation is yours?
Besides, if a person pays their parents "back" the money they charge on the card...or if a person has the money to begin with....then WHY would they use the parents's card to begin with? Is there a reason for you not having your own debit and/or credit card?
Re: Using your parent's credit card w/out permission?
^ Sometimes you just might not have the cash on hand, or don't have the card but you have the funds...just not on hand at the moment...I know a few times I didnt' want to carry my wallet so I took a few cards from there and then later when i changed bags, I forgot the card was in there...so yeah, it can happen
Re: Using your parent's credit card w/out permission?
It's very wrong not to ask permission first. That's stealing in my book and stealing is worse hugging.
I personally would never use anybodys credit/debit card without asking them first. The fact that they are your family members should mean it's easier to ask them.
Re: Using your parent's credit card w/out permission?
Yaar, only one member thought it was "theft". Why get so worked up/defensive about it....that's the feeling I'm getting. YES, generally the idea is that when you take something without asking permission.....it is stealing. BUT....it depends upon the relationship as well. Usually with family....especially with parents......the dynamics of the bond/relationship are such that there is greater flexibility when it comes to money, borrowing, and other issues. There's a higher tolerance level...so chill. Regardless of how anyone in this thread or otherwise thinks or handles the matter in their own family...your parents are not going to convict you of theft and send you to prison. They don't see it that way...neither do you....there's mutual trust. That's ALL that matters.
You did "admit" that you feel you should ask for permission......and it's because you KNOW that although your parents will be okay even if you didn't.....it's simply the right thing to do. It feels right. If this is what's really bugging you, then just be more mindful about asking permission in the future. I do think that sometimes....depending on a person's mood.....they can all of a sudden get irritated if you don't seek permission even though it's a close relationship. Or sometimes you may not be aware that the person really needs the money/whatever it is.....so it's better to find out before hand. Also, I believe, that consistency in courtesy builds trust in relationships. NO, i'm not directing this toward you and your relationship with your parents. It's just a general point.

It's immature because why do you ned to go behind their back? That does not seem like adult behaviour to me.
I've never felt that I have default rights to my parent's money. When I was too young to have my own money, I'd certainly always ask them if I needed it... I never took money from their wallets without their knowing.
By the age of 20, if you're parents are well off, you'll probably have a sufficient allowance for your needs or they will easily give you money/the credit card if you ask for it. If you're parents are not that well off, then quite frankly, I'd feel embarrassed asking them for money when I'm old enough to earn my own.

It still doesn't make sense to me. I get that you don't want to carry the wallet. I get the when women change purses...its possible to forget a card or other items.
BUT I still don't understand how you take your parents card when they're not awre of it? Let's say you're in a store and you don't have cash....but how on earth do you have your mom or dad's card?! Especially if they didn't give it to you? The ONLY reason this would happen is if you TOOK the card inside the house right? Despite you not having cash or forgetting where you put your card.....HOW and WHEN did you come in possesion of a card that belongs to your parents....if they didn't give it to you?
And if you're taking a debit or credit card while in your home....then you're obviously aware of the fact that you MIGHT be making some type of purchase. Well in that case....why not take cash or your own credit card?
"Stealing" might be a bit exaggerated......but at the least....taking a parent's credit card and using it without them being aware that you even have it....is disrespectful IMO.
Re: Using your parent's credit card w/out permission?
I'm 24 now, and just stopped using my parents cards, but I've always had one of my dad's cards with me, in a case of emergency, and used it quite often for gas or something else, mostly gas or a taxi ride home, if it got to late and the busses weren't going , but I would always tell him how much I used, and give him the money.
My parent's have always trusted me, so it's always been hard to screw them over, when you have to live up to being daddy's good little girl lol plus not one of my friends got to go anywhere near their parents cards, so for me to use it like my own I thought was a privilege ...

This has happened to me only a couple of times. My mom gives me her debit card to do the groceries...as she usually does. Now when I come home....I usually remember to give her card back to her. But a couple of times...I forgot. And in a few stores....when you swipe your debit card....you don't need to enter your pin. And I accidentally reached for my mom's debit card instead of mine (thinking it was mine). When I realized my mistake later on...I did the right thing..I told her about it. And she was okay with it. Another example is that I couldn't find my own...or I forgot mine at home...so I'll use hers (because I had forgotten to give it back to her)...but I always let her know. This happens rarely. I usually use my own card for my own personal purchases.
Re: Using your parent's credit card w/out permission?
Out of curiosity, what kind of purchases are so urgent that you can't wait to ask them before spending their card or wait until you have enough money of your own?

In your case....your dad is aware of the fact that his card is in your possession right?

Yes but in the diff. situations you described....you mom knows that you have her debit card right? You forgot to give it to her after grocery shopping......BUT she gave it to you to begin with and didn't ask for it back right? Its not like if/when she finds out that you used the card later on....she'll be surprised to hear that you have the card to begin with.
If the parent is AWARE of the fact that you're in possession of the card and is ok with it (ie. haven't asked for it back).....then I don't see anything wrong with it. My point is that IF you had taken the card without your mom being aware that it's in your possession, and used it...then that's disrespectful.
