What are the differences with reference to community environment, living conditions, culture? I know we are all desi’s but just in general its just intersting to the differences i need to assess for research paper. i’m from usa so i’ll start with some examples please enlighten me with different viewpoints as my opinion might not represent general knowledge.
ok so i know usa has a low population of desi’s compared to uk in fact it has 1/4 of the uk population, & they are sprinkled around the usa instead of being able to have a huge concentration in one area but that also accounts for the fact that the usa is more vast compared to uk. moreover i feel from my understanding the usa pakis dress more liberally than pakis in uk, capris and sleeveless are highly acceptable in most areas. the usa pakis are more likely to wear jeans on a regular basis and less shalwar kameez is visible here in public in fact most people i know only have fancy wear to wear to weddings and casual wear is unheard of. trips back to pak are less frequent vs. uk pakis. the people in usa however, are more likely to go back to pakistan than find spouse in america because of restricted population. please add other stuff and experiences. a lot of usa desi’s end up marrying other races as well. oh and due to limited zabihah meat availability in some areas or most areas in the usa especially those without muslims a lot of usa pakis also consume non-zabihah meat which is widely acceptable here
thoughts opinions please add and uk desis add ur opinions too i’d especially like to hear from those whom have actually visited both places and have first had knowledge
oh and one other difference is that the paki community in america is mostly urdu speaking and uk they speak punjabi or its more acceptable here its not they think ur peindu lol
Uk has Eid every year on four different days … some do it with saudi, others with pakistan, some with UK mosques and the rest with peshawar … so every eid we go around asking people "apki eid kal wali hai ya persoo wali "
1) Pakistani's in UK are settled from decades, and they are very much blended in the society and fully part of main-stream British Citizens.
2) In USA Pakistani's are very new, and... ...... ....................................

Pakis in UK have been there for a while but they came from the backward rural areas and they failed to adopt to modern british society and instead have retreated to isolated neighbourhoods.
Pakis in USA came in the 1980's and came here due to their education and skill and have integrated well into American society. Many of them are patriotic towards USA and don't openly plot attacks against it like the British Pakis do on a daily basis.
chicken biryani that eid scenario is funny so one family might still be fasting and the other celebrating eid lol...the thing here is most ppl don't even celebrate eid so us they try to make it on a saturday or sunday so people can actually pray.
firenze i know american pakis are not well known in mainstream american culture...they don't know the difference between indian or paki, they group all of middle east and india together. another thing is not many desi restuarants around here either the business doesn't last long and they end up closing due to lack of service...nobody supports desi food :( too spicy for them..its not unusual to walk into a desi restuarant here and find not a busy atmoshphere...
true m2k but we still don't have much influence in america although we may have attracted more educated professionals in the 40s and 50s vs. factory workers from pak that england took induring that time period...nothing wrong with keeping in touch with roots but paki brits have a lot more paki influence maybe because geograpically they are closer?

agreed, they were from backward villages but their first generation 1960-70's went to college, get educated and very much successful even compare to USA. Pakistani's in UK are went to some really untouchable area's for Muslims specially Pakistani's.. for example: High Government Posts (ministers).. defense officials ..etc..etc..

agreed, it will take 20 more years to reach the levels where Pakistani community in UK is right now !

I think the difference is class. UK Paks were brought in the 50s and 60s to do manual work. A small number did come as students as well. The UK Pak population is mostly from Azad Kashmir (although not ethnic Kashmiris!!!) and are mainly Mirpuri. For the Mirpuri, the caste system is really important, even more so then the Hindus ans Sikhs. Hence all this forced marriage business, and tight control over family members. The UK government has also played its role by not adequately funding Pak schools, so they only produce semi-literates who invariable take to crime. There has also been real radicalization, with every other girl waring a burka. Paks are at the bottom of most social indicators, suffering poor housing, ill health, unemployment and other social deprivation.
All in all the condition of the UK Paki is pretty dire.

Who cares about "roots"? This is why people force their kids to marry desis only and never even think of being with a non desi simply because of "losing your roots". Sad.

i agree! ppl that come from pakistan have this high desire to be known as western...one bride came here and thought it was fashionable to step away from traditional maroon and red lehnga colors she was shocked at why brides would opt for red on their wedding here in usa errmmm hello whites have been wearing white dresses their whole life its classy red/maroon is classy for us
