PESHAWAR: Twelve soldiers of an Army football team were killed and another five sustained injuries when a suicide bomber attacked them near the House of Signals of Pakistan Army in Kohat Cantonment on Monday.

Initially, police sources said 10 soldiers died in the suicide bombing while six others sustained injuries. Military spokesman Major General Waheed Arshad, who is Director-General Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), immediately confirmed the death of nine soldiers in the attack. He said four troops were wounded. Later the ISPR put the death toll at 12 late in the evening.

Sources in Kohat told The News that the soldiers were attacked while returning to their barracks after playing a soccer match in the nearby playground. The suicide bomber, wrapped in a woollen chaddar, struck when the soldiers reached the Army Public School and College ten minutes past noon.

The site of attack is a maximum-security area close to the Army’s House of Signals, which has its centre in Kohat. The second battalion of the Signals is based in this area. Official and local sources in Kohat identified some of the slain soldiers as Mohammad Nawaz, Rashid Khan, Irfan Khan, Rafiq, Shahid, Adnan, Mushtaq and Ghulam Mohammad. Other soldiers killed in the attack couldn’t be identified immediately. The sources named two injured soldiers as Amjad Khan and Shaukat while the remaining three remained unidentified till filing of this report. The injured soldiers were admitted to the Combined Military Hospital, Kohat.

It was learnt the military authorities made immediate arrangements to send the bodies, mostly mutilated, of the slain soldiers to their hometowns for burial. The entire cantonment was cordoned off by deploying more troops to check the movement of suspicious people.

Police officials avoided comment on the incident as it concerned the Army. A number of efforts to reach them proved futile. Subsequently, police officials requesting anonymity said 10 soldiers were confirmed killed in the explosion initially.

Sources told this scribe that around six kg of explosive was used in the blast, which was supported by bolts and ball bearings to cause more casualties. It was also suspected that the explosive was Russian-made. The age of the bomber was stated to be around 20.

The blast is second of its kind in Kohat during the past five months. On July 19, at least 16 persons — including 11 soldiers, a prayer leader and two minors — were killed and same number injured in suicide blast inside a mosque near Pathan Lines, Kohat Garrison during Ish’a prayers. The same day, seven other security personnel were killed in another suicide blast outside the Police Training Centre in adjoining Hangu district.

It merits a mention here that seven persons were killed and several injured in a similar attack on ASC Centre in Nowshera on Sunday.

The Peshawar airbase was also attacked with four rockets a few days back while a woman was killed when the explosives she was carrying exploded near an Army check-post in Peshawar Cantonment last week. Another suicide attack, targeting law enforcers, took place in Swat a few days back in which several persons were killed and injured.

A late evening press release of the ISPR said in Rawalpindi that 12 security forces personnel embraced Shahadat and two others were injured in the Kohat suicide attack. At approximately 1210 hrs, a suicide bomber blew himself up near the Signals Training Centre Sports Ground. Nine security forces personnel embraced Shahadat on the spot while five were injured including three critically. Later the three critically injured also succumbed to their injuries. The suicide bomber was also killed in the incident.

Online adds: Terming the Kohat bomb blast a highly gruesome, President Musharraf on Monday expressed his deep grief and sorrow over the loss of innocent lives of security forces. “We will not let terrorists disturb the stability and integrity of the country at any cost, President Musharraf said in a statement when he received news of the incident in Vehari.

The government is taking down to earth steps to expose the culprits of humanity (terrorists), he said. He said that blood of security forces would not go waste. He directed the concerned authorities to take good care of the injured and provide them with optimum medical facilities.

He said that the mastermind involved in the blast would not be spared as such culprits are not humans. He further said that such elements were trying to create lawlessness for their own motives adding strict action would be taken against such culprits.

While expressing condolence with the bereaved families, the president prayed to Almighty Allah to rest the departed souls in eternal peace and give courage to the family members to bear the irremediable losses.

Re: Twelve soldiers dead in Kohat

Well we see how well the emergency and martial laws have worked for his own cause of dictatorship.

Re: Twelve soldiers dead in Kohat

Truly tragic...

Emergency/dictatorship zindabad.

Re: Twelve soldiers dead in Kohat

Isn't it why emergency was imposed by the na-pak generals? To control terrorism?
Now we see that terrorists are still striking but emergency has been lifted.

jhoote ka muunh kala.

Re: Twelve soldiers dead in Kohat

i sometimes wonder why they dont target the senior personnel, and its not that difficult given how vulnerable places like e-8, e-9 are. Its always these replaceable grunts that have to pay the price.

Re: Twelve soldiers dead in Kohat

Someone please remind me why emergency was enforced and why it was lifted. I have said multiple number of times, we have left too much for army to decide, there is lots of vested interest in keeping some people alive and kicking.

Re: Twelve soldiers dead in Kohat

Emergency needs to be imposed for a couple of years before things can start returning to normalcy. Sadly due to intl and domestic pressure it had to be lifted early, but during that time Swat was retaken and 300+ terrorists killed, scores arrested. So, all was not lost, but Pakistanis, especially the usual detractors and opposition needs to realize that this is a WAR for Pakistan's very survival. We can not keep treating this as a policing action where terrorists can be sent to courts and expected to be actually tried for their crimes in our lethargic judicial system. Look at how Rauf escaped due to negligence and stupidity of police, as well the courts where nothing could be proven due partly to unavailability of most of the evidence (as it is classified and handed over from intl spy agencies). Even if there was evidence that could be presented, judges would be too scared in most cases to rule against terrorists openly and the appeals process would take most of the time. Exception to this are such judges like Judge Haq Nawaz Baloch of ATC-5 who has locked many terrorists include BLA types (I hope his security is good, or otherwise he will met the same fate as Raziq Bugti at the hands of BLA).

So all of you who are living in a fools paradise and think if Mush goes away or did not exist, some so called democratic leader (BB, NS etc.) could successfully combat the menace of jihadi terrorism than you need to wake up to the real threat of jihadism in Pakistan. Many of our security establishments, army etc. have been infiltrated by jihadis just like our society in general. Only an iron hand, not Mush's flip-flopping, can truly destroy terrorism. And obviously the nation and all normal people need to support these actions, otherwise they can never truly succeed.

We need true martial law in certain parts of the country especially for a period of years before things will start to return to normalcy, otherwise this war is already lost and consequences of that are disastrous. There is no middle ground here and those who think it is, need to be dropped into Waziristan and explain the middle ground to Baitullah Mehsud. Bring a muffler to cover your neck.

Re: Twelve soldiers dead in Kohat

There are democratic countries where despite similar problems, democracy still continued and flourished...
If Indian democracy can withstand the Sikh uprising, the murder of Indra Ghandi, The murder of Rajiv Ghandi, the Babri Masjid riots, the Sikh riots and the Kashmir uprising, why is Pakistan so desperately in need to YEARS of Emrgency rule to tackle the Taliban?

Even Sri Lanka, with its years of violence (Pakistan has yet to experience Suicide bombings on the level of Sri Lanka) is still able to keep Democracy shuffling along somehow?!?!

Fine have a military court trying these Taliban suspects... Lets let the National Assembly decide the proper course of action... If we need seperate courts, so be it. But why do we have to depose the judiciary and silence the Media to tackle terrorism? What does the Media have to do with it?

And by the way, the Judiciary only asked that the govt not abduct people without any charge... The least the govt could have done was to inform the families involved.

Re: Twelve soldiers dead in Kohat

Tell me when Hindu fundamentalists form militias and go after their own government and army to impose their religious rule over India and opposition parties start supporting them like in Pakistan. All the cases you have mentioned have been of minorities and in a country as big as India they can be contained relatively easily without large scale intervention of the system.

Do you ant Pakistan to suffer like Sri Lanka for the rest of eternity? And anyway that is an ethnic civil war, different at its base from what we are facing right now which is the global Jihadi monster.

Why is media important? Media and propoganda is the key ingredient in this war! It is perhaps the most powerful tool in the world today.

P.S. Stop making me edit my post.

Re: Twelve soldiers dead in Kohat

And also, where is the inteligence agency in all this? Why are they not producing any results?
And why is the military obbsesivly using the same failed tactic over and over? What kind of clown colleges did our generals graduate from?

The Army has full control of all routes (except from Afghanistan) in and out of the FATA... Why havent they capitalized on this? Why havent we seen a blockade of fuel for example? Block all oil shipments into Fata and see how long they are able fight.

None of this has anything to do with the judiciary as its a straight foward go in and kill anyone that shoots at you type mission... Its seems more a fear of going in full force then an actual excuse.

Re: Twelve soldiers dead in Kohat

1) ISI and all are divided internally due to obvious reasons. and even if they were not, their effectiveness is only as good as the public's support to them.

2) You can't control routes that easily in that terrain. Even the US cannot completely plug the border. This is already smuggling country.

3) Blockading would affect the civilian population the most and you know how long it would take for people to say Mush is committing genocide if he did anything of the sort.

Re: Twelve soldiers dead in Kohat

The Taliban arent so strong that they can topple the govt... No way.
Besides, none of the Taliban have said they are trying to over throw the Pak govt.
Baitullah Masud himself said that his agenda is spreading Sharia in his own area, and to drive the Americans and Nato out of Afghanistan.. He said in his own words that he has no beef with the Pak govt or the PAk Army, unless they come into his area... So how is this trying to take over Pakistan?
The threat of Islamists is also relegated to a small minority, and that too in the North West. If the problem were widespread, you would see bombs going of outside CD shops and girls schools all across Pakistan.. Heck, you said Punjab is filled with islamists, and yet we have still not seen a single incident in Lahore.. Even at the height of the Lal masjid probelm. Rememebr those kidnapped Chinese parlor women fled to the relative safety of Lahore from Islamabad.
Its no surpirse that all attacks have cetered around Rawalpindi and Islamabad.. Those areas just happen to be a few miles from FATA where all these people are coming from.
The seccesionst movement of Punjab in India was a far bigger threat to India then this Taliban probelem is for Pak... That lasted for soemthing like ten years... India put all it manpower behind it, it had all parties on board, and the were able to control it...
The situation is such that now, Punjab is considered one of their more peaceful provinces.
And India might be bigger, but size is not an excuse... The fact that they have SOOOO much diversity, should logically mean that they have far mroe problems, they should far less unity...
Pakistan only has four provinces and non of them get along!
The truth is, its India's democracy that was its strength... It kept the country united even in the face of such danger...

Same with Sri Lanka... A country that small, with an enemy as cunning, as organized and as well funded as the Tigers, is still able to remain united! Many people have argued that its Sri Lankas Democracy, doing thing by democratic consensus that have kept them together, other wise they would have eneded a long time ago.

I'm quoting this for future use, if this forum still exists than.

You don't understand the global jihadi phenomenon, especially how it is affecting Pakistan. This is not a joke for you to use to score points against Musharraf.

Neither is this an ethnic fight like Sri Lanka. It is a war of ideals, bigger than any army or country. Don't underestimate it just because you are removed from the reality of these people think and how strong their ideas can be for the masses.

Re: Twelve soldiers dead in Kohat

they have security check posts over there now, its not that easy to get in, both the places you mentioned. last time i went to E-8 naval complex, they actually called in to make sure that the party was expecting guests at a check post entrance outside the perimeter.

Re: Twelve soldiers dead in Kohat

  1. If the ISI is dysfunctional, why are we taking out their failure on the Judiciary and the media? Instead of blaming the failure of the state on the Judiciary, why not reevaluate the utility of having an all powerful INTELLIGENCE...

As for the public, their support is redundant to an organization whos activities are generally unknown to the public.
What have the inteligence agencies ever done that needed the support of the public? Rigging the elections was supported by the public? Funding the Taliban was supported by the public? Half the time the Public doesnt knwo whats going on!

2) There arent that many road that lead into FATA.. Pakistan could easily shut those roads down.
They could carry oil on mules from Afghanistan, but that wont be easy either.

3) If Musharaf did it right, used the cleverness he uses to opress the media and the opposition, he could get away with it... Many people would leave the area ofcourse, so you set up camps for such people... If your truly sincere, you will provide food and all other facilities to these people.. Even education! Those that dont leave, you give air lift food to them..
It going to cost a lot, but compared to keeping Emergency going for years as your suggest, the cost will be negligable. If we could handle thousands of displaced Kashmiris after the Earth quake, we can repeat the same effort to accomodate tousands of refugees from FATA.

Oh and even if the terrorists are able to get out, atleast we would distrun their supply line and communication etc...
And all this without Emergency and with the govt.

Also, how long can Pakistan afford to be under Emergency.. No one will suport it at home, and eventually the international community is going to get fed up...

Re: Twelve soldiers dead in Kohat

I pray in my heart.. No need to prove my loyalty or my humanity to people whos oppinion means so little to me...
Present company excluded ofcourse.

Inshallah we will overcome this adversity and send these terrorists to where they belong - in hell.

It will take Kiyani sometime to rebuild the army after it was left in shambles by the incompetent dictator, but Kiyani will and the armed forces will once again rise against all the conspirators of our nation.
