The gaming stigma

I am a gamer. I play MMORPGs and FPS, you can find me sniping in America’s Army and leading world PVP raids in World of Warcraft. For me gaming is a way to relax. Just stop thinking and chat with a few guys and gals over vent.

But I find it interesting that Pakistani’s find it very odd that I would still play computer games at 26. The general comments are of shock and more importantly that I have to give it up when I get married. Confusing to say the least. The stigma with computer games is that its a child’s thing. Though considering the high level of logical thinking and the problem solving skills needed for these games, I think that is changing.

But more importantly the concept that if i get married the gaming has to stop. The question I bet is if there are any girl gamers, what do they do? Also does it really matter in a marriage if i load up Warcraft, get on vent and start screaming to kill the damn healer, so that I can relax?

Yes I tried to keep the gamer jokes to a minimum.

Re: The gaming stigma

lol

people used to say this to me and my bro when we were younger. me especially, since 'it's something girls should not be doing.' ok, a lot of girls play games but for me it was my passion. i was better at playing them than most guys, knew more about games and the industry and wanted to be a designer. even now, when a new phd student joined our group, he was surprised at the games i had played in the past, when the topic of him being a gaming nerd came up.
but as i've become older, they have taken a back seat to life and i would never have considered it, but they should. i don't play or know nearly a fraction of what i used to in my teens. and i completely gave up online gaming as it's too easy to become addicted to spending hours and hours online, especially if you want to be better than everyone else.
i don't think there is a problem with gaming as you become older. you just need to prioritise, especially after marriage. it should be a hobby, not a way of life.

i'm lucky that my fiance, although not a gamer in the same way that i am, does play a lot of games and uses gaming to relax. so when we're together we often play games. and yes, his parent's have complained that we still act like children and aren't ready for marriage. and in both cases, it's just ridiculous to make those remarks, given our careers and how many responsibilities we have. but whatever.

anyway, i've only been managing to squeeze in 30mins-1hr a day of Fallout 3, woe is me ;)

Re: The gaming stigma

I had the joyous pleasure of having a debate on Friday with a pair of Pakistani sisters around my own adult age about just which features of Assassin's Creed made it the finest game ever and sharing our hopes and expectation of the next Prince of Persia game.

Gamer Pakistani girls are without doubt by far and away the coolest type of Pakistani girls.

PS: It's not nice to scream at people to kill the healer, I kept getting mugged by a tank and 2 DPS guys last night while just trying to keep my team alive in Warhammer Online :(

Re: The gaming stigma

hmmm, maybe I should become a gamer! Sounds interesting. Never taken it up thus far though!

Re: The gaming stigma

Its true gaming does take a back seat once your married...but thats part of life...although the occassional gaming isnt that bad!!!

PS the best game ever has to be Metal Gear Solid!!! :)

I'm also a gamer. Been gaming for about 20 years now. I mostly like to play RPGs so the XBox 360 is the console of choice for me this generation. I find more and more "older" people gaming now (like college, university and beyond). I started to appreciate the hobby a lot more once I started studying computer science and have been a gamer since.

I'm married and still gaming. I've even got my wife to play a couple of games with me. She even enjoys watching the RPGs that I play, especially for the story. I don't think there's anything wrong with being married and still gaming. Like any other hobby, as long as you don't get addicted/obsessed by it and as long as it doesn't cause to neglect the things you should be giving higher priority to then it's fine.

My wife isn't a gamer either, but as long as I don't overdo it, it's all good. She even got me the XBox 360 messenger kit so that I could chat more efficiently when somebody messages while I'm on msn from XBox Live :).

Gaming takes a back seat to a lot of things in life, but he specifically asked about the concept that it has to stop after marriage.

I haven't had a chance to try MGS yet. I'm currently looking forward to Gears of Wars 2, which comes out tomorrow and the Last Remnant, which comes out in a couple of weeks.

Re: The gaming stigma

MGS is one of the best games ever..started out on the ps1. Ive just discovered the "metal gear solid online comic" somewhere which tells the story to those who dont know!!!

I used to be a gamer until i got married. Enough said!!!

Did you stop because of your wife? I cut it down a lot myself, but I still play now and then. I've playing Fable 2 for the past two weeks and some Tales of Vesperia before that. My wife is even letting me get Gears or War 2 :).

Re: The gaming stigma

I finished Fable 2: The Lost Chapters.. :D

i am in love with games, i used to play alot but stopped because of a lvls and when i joined uni for the first year i did nto play one game but recently i have started playing again because of new lappy as NFS carbon came free with it!:p

Lost Chapters was an expansion to the original Fable. Fable 2 right now is only on XBox 360.

Re: The gaming stigma

Though I doubt this applies to anyone here, but the best way to retain both your girlfriend and your PlayStation is to buy DDR (dance dance revolution)!

^ Or Guitar Hero :dhimpak:
