portuguese, french, and dutch were already trading and looking around many of india’s ports. they weren’t anywhere near as bad as the british have been in south asia.

but to answer the main question - it was only a matter of time. the west had experienced industrial revolution - the rulers in delhi weren’t into science or technology. the world was poised for a western takeover in many ways.
