Irrespective of whose version of Islam you grew up in, just benchmark it against Quran and Authentic sunnah and your all set to nail the differences.
About DVOI .... phew too much to say, a lot of things we do that are not anywhere prescribed in Quran and Sunnah:
1 - Mazar worshipping.
2 - Chaaleeswan
3 - Taweez gunday
4 - Religious qawali at mazars
5 - Minnat
6 - Punsurahs
7 - Hisar khechna
8 - Dastak dena
9 - Niaz
10 - I've even heard some people say they have seen the Jalwa of Allah SWT Aodhubillah and very pious people see during the night of 27th Ramadan.
11 - Jinn appearing at mithai stores after midnight
12 - Jinn under the tress at maghrib time
13 - Ofcourse everyone in Pakistan dies as a shaheed.
14 - Chilla kaatna for empowering a Jinn
15 - Azaan ke waqt ser per dupatta orh leyna
16 - Baghair topi ke namaaz nahi hoti (every masjid has straw caps)
18 - Raat ke waqt quechi nahi khat khat larna chahyiay
19 - Mirror breaking is nahoosat
20 - More that I can't remember

Whenever you buy a new house, the first thing you should carry to your house should be the Quran even though you will put that with the other*** "books"*** on the cabinet and never see it again until you buy another house.
Desism should not be confused with Islam either. If a custom , ritual or tradition does not conflict with basic Islamic beliefs then take it as culture. If this custom, ritual or tradition conflicts with basic Islamic beliefs then non violent efforts should be made to stop it.
I think this thread is about how cultural customs are made to integrate into Islam and a few generations later they end up being called Islamic customs.
Oh, someone revived this thread. Whatever happened to "Different". Is his new nick "Disappeared"? Anyway, good to read some of my posts here. Damn! I was good. Good articulation on a very touchy subject. That analogy about the physics student is so enlightening. I may use it in one of my blogs, one day. :-)
Just wanted to say that the whole hand on chest thing is nothing to do with religion. its a kinda "dilli khushi aap se mil kai"
The whirling dirwishes or the jumping ones at the are doing dhikr Allah. and surely that cant be bad! ive been told by people that they cannot help themselves abd they have no control over themselves!
Grave worship does happen. Its wrong. But do not confuse praying for the Saint or for your parents at someones grave as actually praying to THAT person. No knowing sane muslim would do that. It is Allah that gives!
And many things we consider religious were actually arab traditions. A Hyena is hilal ( quote Abu ameenah bilal Phillips)....doesnt mean you and i are going to indulge in it!
Oh you didn't hear? Cookies are haraam, because they're a western concept. A western conspiracy to make muslims in Pakistan infertile. We really need to be sticking to our gulab jamun, the least deceptive of desserts.
