Smoking And Driving

If it is so unsafe to talk/text and drive then why is it considered okay to smoke and drive???

Re: Smoking And Driving

Because maybe smoking does not create a distraction. In fact those who are regular smokers, get their focus back once their lungs are full of nicotine. :D

Re: Smoking And Driving

So what about drinking water and driving? That is against the law now?

Re: Smoking And Driving

I was thinking the same few days back..

TLK how is it not a distraction? One hand is constantly occupied by the cigarette. You can control the steering with one hand easily but in emergency situations you might need both hands..

Someone I know died while spitting pan-ki-peek out and atleast three people got seriously injured.

One must drive carefully as many other lives maybe at risk by some silly mistake. Same goes for water or anything else that might be distracting. Not everything *has *to be a law, somethings can be common sense :)

Re: Smoking And Driving

they have done studies which measure reaction speed while people are engaged in different activities, smoking, talking, listening to music, talking on cellphone etc.

because if it was talking that was distracting then you would not be allowed to speak to the driver in he car, may be a good reason to shut up yip yappers and backseat drivers.

Re: Smoking And Driving

I think it is a distraction and also not good for everyone in the car .

Re: Smoking And Driving

I think smoking is a nasty habit...and I'm not trying to defend it or anything...but it is diff in the sense that when your using your cell...your mind is focusing on something else altoghter and smoking is just a habit that doesn't require thinking...

Also I don't smoke...but I drive with one hand anyway!

But yea just use common sense...

bad and awful.

people stink up their cars..and the smell stays there for months.

Re: Smoking And Driving

According to research most distracting part is dialing the no. Talking it self is less distracting.

Re: Smoking And Driving

lol goes to the Thread! when you need both hands? put it in the ashtray or keep it in the mouth...Folks!!! I think that is why nearly every car has a ashtray, because people smoke...

Re: Smoking And Driving

I don't particularly care if every car has an ashtray......that doesn't necessarily mean that its there to hold your cigarette or promote smoking while driving.....maybe it is there so you can "put it out" before you begin to drive.

As mentioned above, it's not the distraction from talking that is of utmost concern. It is the dialing part where your hands are occupied. At least the phone is not on fire.........

How many of you have heard of someone that accidentally dropped a lit cigarette in the car while driving? I'm sure that many have. I have seen someone panic when they did this and that kind of reaction certainly can't be safe.

I rarely drive with both hands on the wheel.......but the spare one is never holding a smoulderng fire hazard.

My problem with smoker is that it takes 12 year for a cigarette butt to go out of the ecosystem.
So When at night some smoker drops it out side of his window I Always give him dipper.

Really typing a txt or dialing a no. takes your attention like nothing else. Its not about just hands being occupied.

I think equvelant to that would be a mother having little child in backseat, that can take you mind away from the road like nothing esle too. :)

so smoke filterless cigarettes and if you want to use a filter get one of those old school ones.
or go for pipes and cigars, much less of an ecological concern.
although I am kinda ticked off at the cultural insensitivities here by car manufacturers and want a built in hooky a installed as an option.

stats for smoking related accidents versus cellphone related accidents are out there for anyone who wants to look at facts.

now if by smoking we are referring to the chronic, now that is a whole diff ball game

I have not seen cars swerve or speed up and slow down aimlessly for smokers as I have seen it for idiots on their cellphones, or worse idiotas putting makeup on...like putting a damn eye pencil in traffic going at 50 mph is really the smartest thing to do..

Re: Smoking And Driving

can we add electric shaving to the list of punishable offences?

NO!!
because I use it some times. But only at drive way and on my street, before even getting on link road.
That thing is just time saving technique.

electric shaving should be added to the list of punishable offenses even if it is not being done in a car.
a civilized shave is a proper wet shave including a warm compress, preshave oil, shave cream applied and lather made using atleast a simple badger bristle brush, and a nice shave preferably with a straight razor, or with a safety razor or at least with a good cartridge razor like fusion power.

I do see less men shave on the way then women doing their hair, lips, eyes and god knows what. I mean why not just wax on the way and take a dump on the way too.

Re: Smoking And Driving

Whatever while driving such 'multi tasking' doesnt make any sense. Being on road needs sensibility. But well if someone really thinks of themselves that smart and rather acrobat and all.

Re: Smoking And Driving

It’s annoying when people flick the cigarette out of the car window while driving

Re: Smoking And Driving

should they stop in the middle of the highway and then flick their cigarette :)

Re: Smoking And Driving

They should keep an ashtray inside the car instead of polluting the roads
