LUDHIANA: A Shiv temple at Bhadaur town in Barnala district of Punjab has turned a deaf ear to the shouting matches that politicians have indulged in over Ghar Wapsi and religious conversions in the past few days.

On Wednesday, a maulvi quietly recited the Fateha or special Muslim prayers inside a Shiv temple even as sadhus and Sikh granthis listened in reverence. The fact that hymns of the Quran were being recited in the backdrop of a picture of Lord Shiva did not seem incongruent to them. The temple management also arranged for utensils and other articles for the event.

The rituals were being performed as part of the ninth-day prayers for Shoket Ali of Bhadaur, 20, a helper in a house in the area, who had died in a road accident earlier. Ali’s father is in jail for the last three years for his involvement in a murder case. His mother Shamshera Khan did not have the means to complete the rituals on her own and approached the Gyara Rudhar Shiv Mandir in the town to arrange for the prayers and they agreed.

Such bonhomie may surprise the outsider, but it is nothing new for the people. The temple’s management has been welcoming other faiths into their precincts since the mid-1990s when the management committee was constituted. About three years ago, they opened a big hall for members of all communities to hold religious functions.

Bhadaur has about 250 Muslim families in a population of about 20,000.

Only in December, three Muslim functions have been held at the temple while Sikhs have arranged 10 events. The temple’s managers say that by giving space to various communities, they are promoting universal brotherhood and strengthening the bond between them.

“We see it as a sign of communal harmony that exists in our area and we are proud of it,” says Krishan Kumar, member of the temple management committee.

Ali Akram, Shoket’s uncle said, “This was a small and personal event but it is going to give the right message to those who are trying to divide the people of the country in the name of religion.”

This is not a ‘universal brotherhood’ as mentioned by temple’s managers but its **AGAIN **an effort to change face of Islam…like Hinduism periodically changed Sikhism, Buddhism etc

i heared jews says ‘if we cant found our temples in a place where we live, we will prefer to offer our prayer in a Masjid not in a church coz there are so many pics’

How is it an effort to change anything when it is just a gesture not a common practice? The maulvis agreed to perform it there. Maybe they performed it in a place where idols were not visible. There is no shortage of Masjids making them do it. It is a gesture of communal harmony. Anyway don’t worry you are not being made or asked to do anything. It is an isolated example. Also, did you read the story of the guy they did it for. His father was in jail for murder and his mother could not afford it. She approached the mandir for help. The guy died in a road accident. Maybe no one would have performed prayers for him.

How do you know the prayers occurred in a room of idols or are you assuming? It could have occurred in many rooms inside the temple. It was all consensual.

Please read this story of the Muslim child raised by a Hindu father. The child was abandoned by his parents. Might shock you that such stories happen but they are true. The father never married because he didn’t want anyone to affect the upbringing of his child. and he basically existed just to take care of his son. This Hindu father himself was abandoned and raised by Muslim parents.

He can be a PAID molvi…not a matter of visible or non-visible pics or idols…if Masjid available than no need to offer in any temple if not than also no problem in offering in a open ground instead of a temple

8-10 years back a salah arranged in a church & imamat was made by a woman which is not allowed in Islam…but only one namaz (for pics) arranged…Islam can never changed by these lame actions

one hadees is '‘Muflasi kufr tk lay ja sakti hay’ if a person called a temple for help whats in it…Indian Muslims living a very poor life indeed & its not my comment…this is the observation of an International magazine

How is prayer in a ground any different? Grounds are worshipped in many religions including Hinduism. Mountains, rivers, trees, sky. fire, land ...you name it, here is a religion somewhere worshipping it!

Paid by who molvi? I think you missed the part where the mother could not afford funeral costs and approached the temple for help. Maybe she didn’t want to have it in the open.
How do you know it didn’t happen in an empty room in the temple with no idols? If the woman has no objection to this voluntary action, why do you? She is not forcing you to follow her actions.

International magazines makes lots of observations on different countries. You would know that. Some issues exist like all minorities but if they are educated, like in all countries like all educated people they live a better life. Probably a more stable and equal life then Muslims in middle east or desis in middle east who hardly ever have equal rights to Arabs.

What if they are praying outside and someone is worshipping natural elements or praying around fire next to them? Where would this mother go who could not afford funeral costs inside mosque?

While answering your question, I have to correct you too.

Correction: A Muslim does not consider Allah as ‘his Allah’. Muslim considers Allah as ‘Allah of everyone… regardless of people accept Allah as their creator or not’.

As for your question … answer is ‘Yes’, a prayer is valid. For validity of a prayer 'intention' is important and not 'surroundings or circumstances'.

Anyhow, for onlookers who may not know the identity of that Muslim, his Namaz would seem odd, and that is the reason, if there is choice, one should avoid the situation. Since prayer (Namaz) needs concentration and chances is that idols all around a person could affect concentration than also one should avoid the situation. But if necessity arises, or identity is not an issue nor one thinks that idols all around a person would affect concentration, than there is no problem.

It does not mean that one should start praying or make it a habit of praying with idols all around, rather, it only means that if such situation do arises, than idol all around a person cannot become an excuse of not praying.
