Misled into conversion, say Muslim families in Agra : India, News - India Today

The 57 Muslim families in Uttar Pradesh’s Agra district, who the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) on Monday claimed to have ‘converted’ to Hinduism, have said that they were misled by Dharma Jagran Samanvay Vibhag and Bajrang Dal activists into believing that the event was for BPL cards and not for religious conversion.

“We did not know anything about it. We were forced to convert our religion. We were promised that our IDs will be made. We were just asked to dress properly. The men were asked to wear skull caps,” a woman at Madhunagar slum area of the city said.

The Bajrang Dal and the Dharma Jagran Samanvay Vibhag, an RSS offshoot, on Monday claimed to have converted the families into Hinduism at a ‘Purkhon ki ghar vapsi’ (Coming home of the ancestors) ceremony, where the right-wing groups said they were able to bring more than 200 Muslims “back to Hinduism”.

The RSS and Bajrang Dal members had prepared a list of all the ‘converts’ to get their voter IDs and Aadhaar cards made with their new names, an event later defended by the BJP.** “People shouldd be free to choose their own religion. If they have again adopted Hinduism, there is no harm,”** senior party leader Vinay Katiyar said on Tuesday.

The issue rocked Parliament on Wednesday with Bahujan Samaj Party supremo Mayawati hitting out at the NDA government over the issue.

“Forced conversions will trigger communal tension in the country. The central government is responsible for this. The central and Uttar Pradesh governments must take this issue seriously. Communal forces must be stopped from doing such things,” she said.**

“If in a secular nation, focible religion conversion is taking place, the government must take action against the people doing this,” senior Congress leader Manish Tewari said.

Minister of State for Minority Affairs, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, denied the accusation of the RSS being involved, saying, “In my knowledge, an FIR has been registered over the issue. It is wrong to drag any organization into this due to political reasons.” The RSS is the ideological mentor of the ruling BJP at the Centre.

Senior BJP leader Kalraj Mishra said, “This is not at all forcible if someone wants to change his or her religion on her own. Our constitution gives them that right, so what’s wrong in it? It shows a deliberate attempt on the part of state government to make it an issue.”

Reports also said the RSS is planning a larger conversion ceremony in Aligarh district of Uttar Pradesh on Christmas, when it plans to convert nearly 4000 Muslims and Christians from the area into Hinduism.

In the 90's I have read similar articles in Pakistani papers that Hindus want to convert Indian Muslims to Hinduism, steps like these will only cement those fears. With BJP in power, RSS feels empowered.

I personally don't buy the assertion that these guys have converted to have their ids made. Changing religions is not a pack of cards.

BTW the caption 'Purkhon ki ghar vapsi' (Coming home of the ancestors)' is quite meaningful.

that was not the incentive, it was told to them to come in the ceremony with proper dress as their photos will be taken for certain Ids.

BTW, this reminds me the reaction by Pakistani liberals (so called) when they shown a person announcing his conversion on national media.

am not that conversant about Indian history. The articles were from zindagi and takbir. At that time people used to mix the conversions with maha bharat...what was shuddhi movement?

people who converted say they were misled. A Minister is saying that a report has been lodged and government should not be involved. How come government should not be involved if people are being converted in the name of preparation of certain Ids (like ration card, like NIC)? I don't know what procedure do they adapt for this conversion. chanting of some Mantra (like Kalma)?

I also read that in Akhbar e Jahan that Shudhi (purify) movement for conversion of Muslims (probably in Kashmir) was there, when Babri incident happened.

I do buy these stories as I buy stories of conversion of Hindu girls in Sindh. Simple? because, there is no escape from realities. One thing / attitude / action tells that everything is possible with BJP / RSS like organistions like JuD, Lej.

You can not equate these stories with that of Sindh.Both are extremely different .A deeper analysis will give you the insight. :)

can't say this is unexpected. RSS, VHP etc. have been talking about such things from a long time but everyone has laughed it off. but with the butcher of gujarat in power, these crazy hindutva monkeys feel empowered. such incidents are guaranteed to rise in the hindi belt where politics is all about caste and religion.

elected on the basis of economic reform and anti-corruption - no reform, no change in corruption, meanwhile turning the country into a saffronist's bunghole. i hope it was worth it, aralitter and others who voted for these.

somebody played somebody here - may be the hindu group tried to bait and switch the 57 muslim families, or the 57 muslim families baited and switched the hindu group. facts need to emerge after investigation, right now we have he said she said.

It is quite nonsensical for people to try and equate this to forced conversion atrocities of Pakistan - where young baby girls are abducted and married of to muslims - if you don't see the complete difference, you have to be blind deaf and dumb.

It is equally nonsensical to somehow construe this as groups 'feeling' empowered because Modi is PM. These things happened before Modi getting elected, actually more.

Frankly I find the Modi government playing LESS religious politics than Congress and its crony parties used to do (and still do).

Referring Modi as butcher of Gujarat is unjustified - all authorities have exonerated him but those who have made up their mind simply call all investigations an eye wash or under pressure - meaning they will only be satisfied if such investigation convicts him! Is that called an investigation or witch hunt?

possible, who knows as yet? It is not unheard of in India and Africa. Some affluent groups gives money to build a school or a place of worship - locals either in gratitude or quid pro quo, convert.

on the flip side, somebody in the village is smart enough to recognize an opportunity for profit and cons the missionary!

either has happened, nothing new.

After all, it is only humans that need religions, not God!

As I said 'I call my doggy doggy, you call your doggy PM'. I can't do much to change this perception. Till few weeks ago, I consider Advani an asset of Sindh, but now after reading his contribution to Babri demolition, I thank God that such people left Sindh for the good. I don't know why secular Sindhis are supporting such parties in India, may be they still didn't forget what happened to them in Karachi on January 6, 1948.

If they want to convert, let em convert. Who cares. If they forcing them into it, then its a crime and a something that needs to be investigated. Otherwise, convert away!
