India rock in Pakistan????????
khushfehmian tau dekho...
Khamosh pani was a drab fest- it was more of a tele film. The only saving grace were some witty dialogues, translated by shoaib hashmi.
In the current lot , Syed Noor has produced some excellent films like jeeva and sargam. they were commercially successful as well. I think we need smart directors like him and sajjad gul.
I can understand you not liking Khamosh Pani... tastes vary. but did you seriously think that Jeeva and Sargam were "excellent"?
I've seen both and I don't see how they were any better than the usual Lollywood rubbish. the only good things about Sargam were Zeba Bakhtiar and the songs. the rest was business as usual.
the real reason why I'm confused is because your taste in dramas is very high brow (Ashfaq Ahmed's falsafiana plays, etc) and you're a very tough critic... but when it comes to films, you think that Jeeva/Sargam etc were excellent. and also that Syed Noor of all ppl is a smart director?
not trying to be rude (hope it didn't come out that way).... I'm just a little confused...
..and this is our current Film Industry.. unless and untill we have good writers, producers and directors, Shaan will continue to miss bullets, Moamer shall continue to fight-off 20 bad guys with one Laathi, and Saima shall continue wearing her lacha's and dance.
Work, movies and clips like this are an open invitation for anyone to make fun and ridicule.. and then they cry a river of how the 'awaam' makes fun and doesn't appreciate their 'work'.
Artists all over are selective about the movies they work in..
imo, we need ppl who take pride in their work (no matter what it is) more than we need good writers and producers... we do need good directors though since they're the captain of the ship. but again the most important thing we need are ppl who take pride in their work. once we get a critical mass of those types of directors, good writers, producers, actors in the film industry will follow.
some ppl take their work very seriously. they're their own toughest critics and don't need to prove anything to the audience. their name is a brand. they're perfectionists. I'm thinking of ppl like Sahira Kazmi, Mehreen Jabbar, Shoaib Mansoor, Raana Sheikh, etc. other names who're not among us or are not active would be Mohsin Ali, Shehzad Khalil, Rashid Dar, etc. I'm sure we've heard of what kind of tyrants Shehzad Khalil and Sahira Kazmi are/were on their sets. we've heard how long it took Shoaib Mansoor to shoot 2-minute scenes with a limbless Captain Kashif in ABC. how he would tinker endlessly with the pillows, the lighting etc until the scene looked completely believable. similarly, how tough Shehzad Khalil was on his actors on Tanhayian's set if they didn't measure up to his standard. Sahira is known for screaming at ppl and being a tyran in general (and the audiences love her for that). this is why you see their name and you just stop because you know that they would have given everything they've got to a project. when these guys are involved, I don't care who the actors, writers, producers, etc are. I'll stop and watch it. and it is their professionalism, their drive, their pride that is lacking in other folks...
Shaan openly derides the filams he works in by the dozens. he insults the audiences who go and watch his filams. what kind of a professional is that? where is the pride? where is the self respect? he biatches about the ppl he works with constantly and how they're not good enough. how the audience is jaahil and stupid. well, what did he accomplish when he worked with a maestro like Shoaib Mansoor in a real film? is it not sad that he was the only so-called "professional"/full-time actor among the three leads and he was completely outshone by Iman and Fawad Khan. Fawad completely stole that film. so, what happened there Shaan mian?
the less said about the self-delusional fool that is Syed Noor the better. we had that other pseudo intellectual on this forum who was directing a film and going by his claim it seemed he was going to best Godfather with his film and he had to use Indian singers because our singers were not good enough, etc. and boy what an giant egg did he lay. now, he lays one medium sized egg every day on TV as a TV anchor. kamaal dunya hay bhai...
so, imo, more than good actors/producers/writers and even directors, we simply need ppl who take pride in what they do. ppl who are perfectionists. not geniuses necessarily but ppl who want to do things well no matter how small those things are. and we have very few ppl like that in our TV industry and none in the filam indushtry.

Speaking of TYRANTS at the PTV.....the two figure-heads who would create earthquake before their arrival on switchboard at master control room....were none the other but MNH (Mohammad Nisar Hussain..PTV-Lahore) and KAA Kunwar Aftab Ahmed at PTV-Karachi...and add to them Agha Nasir... a perfect recipe of some outstanding productions PTV could have ever ever witnessed!
Yes---tyrancy plays its cogent role! The minute an artiste takes the director easy....the serial will loose it momentum, variation and punch somewhere or the other!

Re: Pakistan's film industry is in collapse!
I agree that khamosh pani ia agood film but not a great one not even very good. But this is probably the best international audience has seen from pakistan.Well it it got so many awards & sabiha deserves them. Why,Because producers of films in pakistan work with their one hand tie to the back as sabiha explains. No money, no encouragement,no respect.International audience & juries understand it.
Many people in this film industry seem to contradict themselves…
Syed Noor sees himself as a big deal in the industry, always criticising and commenting other people’s work- yet most of his films are below average with probably a few (barely) watchable films.
Javed Sheikh is the biggest disappointment this industry has seen. You would expect him to learn from his recent bollywood experience but all you end up seeing is some 80’s bolly inspired film he expects pakistani audiences to be wowed with.
Shaan - Mr. Contradiction himself, stars in a dozen trash movies and still desperately commands respect like he was Sam Mendes or something. He really needs to be brought down to earth.
These type of people need to be boycotted, their attitude towards filmmaking is pathetic. ![]()
Re: Pakistan's film industry is in collapse!
agreed with your post above, KraziM3. that is what I was getting at too. people who're the "gold standard" in the filam indushtry are a big part of the reason why it sucks. ppl like Syed Noor, Shaan, Javed sheikh, Javed Faazil, etc...
and regarding Javed Sheikh, more than Bollywood, it's disappointing that he hasn't learned jack from being involved with some of PTV's finest productions... Shamaa, Ankahi, etc. he is a fine actor but somehow when it comes to films, he completely loses his head and makes complete trash.
just because you're making a Pakistani film, it doesn't mean that you must throw out all logic, common sense and artistic sensibility.

no problem I understand your point of view. But I feel you're not keeping into consideration that films made in our subcontinent are larger than life. thats why PTV dramas struck a chord with us coz they were realistic. Films on the other hand are far from reality. If you'll keep that in mind you would be better able to appreciate them.
An integral part of our fims is music. I can say it without hesitation that our film music from the golden era is inimitable. You might have a different taste in music thats why you don't appreciate it. Though I like to listen to all kinds of music.
I read your comment where you criticized waheed murad and then compared him with tv actors. Even I personally love pakistani tv actors . But are you aware a lot of tv actors like Shakeel used to imitate him? watch him in zer zabar pesh to see how he imitated his walk and dressing et all.Waheed's popularity was immense. He's not as skilled as tv actors like qavi or shafi but then he's popular for his screen presence and star appeal.
Syed Noor is a very talented director and has made some excellent films despite having financial constraints. His films have drama , good music and they are enjoyable. These films might not be realistic, sophisticated or urbane but has he ever claimed to make such films? Noor's strength lies in depicting rural settings. thats where his stories are set. Give the credit where it's due-his majajan is still running in cinemas.
How will the industry revive itself when the actors and directors have one and only one sole ambition, to work in India with Indian directors. All of them think of it as a highlighted zone on their cv's!

Ypo cant blame pakistani artists who wish to work in bollywood. At one time bollywood actors even like shabana azmi used to work in trash hollywood films No more.Things have changed. It is the otherway around.
It is an irony that dalip kumar alias yousuf sahib.Shahrukh.madhubala all have their parents who migrated from pak to india & big khans have pathan origins.Pl think what they would have achieved in pakistan.
Films is a art cum commercial media & cannt flourish withoutsocial, educational development of audience.Good artists can achieve nothing.Cirrect me if I am wrong but live public dance performances are still banned in pakistan. What can you expect Farah khans & saroj khans of pakistan to do in their own country.
Re: Pakistan's film industry is in collapse!
I wish a happy new year to to all paticipants of this thread & film industry of pakistan
There's nothing wrong in wanting to work with people in Bollywood.. what's wrong is making it their one and only sole mission and being recognized and having their acting skills judged on the basis of having worked in India. Moamer boasts, Meera boasts and their only claim to fame is being a part of Bollywood.
Re: Pakistan's film industry is in collapse!
People in the industry should quit dreaming of bollywood which has been producing trash after trash on the basis that their budget is high. Instead of imitating them we should come up with our own identity in cinema and that can only be done if we do some serious thinking in regards to how we want to be seen.
Re: Pakistan's film industry is in collapse!
People are talking about the film industry...man here Pakistan itself is on the verge of collapsing! :s - Pehlay Allah Pakistan ko bachayeh.

I think you are correct in general but out of date.Just see the last 3 films I saw in a good multiplex & pl give your comments.Films are Paa,Rocket singh,3idiots.So long as there is market for trash all

Well said but let us be optimistic. pakistan needs social development to get out of this mess.Good films will help.I am an Indian I am seeings effects of cinema on on indian society for last 60 years. It was so similar to present pak society but cinema has helped in many ways.

Absolutely---------and I love watching movies like *SATYA, MAQBOOL, 36-Chowrangee Lane and and Salam* *Bombay** again and again and again !*
Similarly------the GUJJAR series from Lahore's dilapidated studios have kept Pakistani Film Industry alive and limited to that circuit only! and what we see in our country currently----the idealism and the survival of the fittest----well depicts the effects of cinema on Pakistani society--------:)

I really don't think there's ever a market for 'trash'.. ask any person on the street, in a village. If u ask them who their fav actor/actress is they won't mention Pakistani artists.. they'll say "Shahrukh Khan and Rani Mukherjee".
Our industry needs to give us something everyone will remember.. what is one Pakistani movie that broke all records? Which movie can we all say was the best Pakistani movie ever to be made?
To reform the industry we need to begin at ground zero and work-up..eliminate all the oldies that refuse to budge or bring change and replace them with fresh-minds that are creative and productive.
