Re: NZ V SL

37.5 Vettori to Silva, OUT, Done in the flight. Vettori tossed it up, slow in the air, Silva came down the track and is made to wait a touch and he lofts it straight to long-off. Sangakkara says something to him as he walks past. Maybe he was admonishing him or may be he was asking for some special item to be ordered for dinner. I think it was something about the rash stroke.

Simon: "I'm guessing that Sanga's chat with Silva was something to do with Silva now having been out for 23 in his last three innings... "

Re: NZ V SL

Re: NZ V SL

SLA are showing that they are currently the best sub-continental team under pressure. They are easily the best Asian fielding side and their side is packed with match-winning batsmen (Jayasuriya and Sangakarra) and bowlers (Murali, Vaas and Malinga). Hope justice is done in the end and they meet the best side in the world Australia in the Final :)

Re: NZ V SL

from Cricinfo:

Pretty clinical from Sri Lanka. No drama, no urge to indulge in showmanship. No frantic hitting. There was no need. 220 was not a stiff target and they jogged home. Two more points. New Zealand have tasted defeat for the first time in the tournament.

Ranatunga, sitting in a television studio, is not quite thrilled with the way SL approached the chase. " I am a bit disappointed with the way they played. They should have struck to their usual aggressive game." He would have liked to see the likes of Jayasuriya playing more aggressively. Well.... you can't please everyone.

Sangakkara had said on the eve of the game: "Most of the times we've gone wrong, we've tried to change our game, but we've realised that's a bit foolish. When we won the World Cup we played a unique brand of cricket and that's how we play now against any side"

I guess they would have played that way but here they were chasing a small target and must have felt there was no need to up the ante.

Re: NZ V SL

good going SL :k: :k: win da cup once more!

Re: NZ V SL

All three are through to the semis already because of their very positive net run-rate. RSA and ENG will decide who will be the 3’rd. If each lose one game and win one, they both will sit on 8 points and their low net run-rate will decide which of the two will go through.

If RSA lose against NZ but win ENG, they go through. ENG need to win both their two remaining games to go through. AUS, NZ and SL play to decide who will finish 1,2 or 3’rd.

Re: NZ V SL

I know it is usual for the Man-of-the-Match award to come from the winning team but in this match would have liked Syris to have recaived the award instead of Vaas. A 100 in a low scoring match is double worth taking 3 wickets.

Re: NZ V SL

^ Agreed
Styris was a one man army in this match

Re: NZ V SL

NZ not necessarily so. Losses against SA and Aus may put their place in danger. Especially with the beating their run rate took this game.

Re: NZ V SL

Great win by Sri Lanka.
