Ladies, did you learn to cook from your MIL

Looking at the replies in my other thread, I was thinking that men dont just start eating after they get married, they are food lovers even as single and many love the food their mom cooks.

Now if you are married to a guy who grew up eating his mom food, he may have developed the taste buds for his mom’s cooking.

What if he asks you to cook like his mom, even the normal food like daal, aaloo gosht and what not. Worst, if he asks you to ask your his mom for the recipe, would you do that or would you take an offense to his request?

How many of you married ladies learned few dishes from your MIL?

Re: Ladies, did you learn to cook from your MIL

Here is what I learned:

  1. Methi ki khichri
  2. Chat masala
  3. My FIL's favorite omlette (with darkened onions)
  4. Kulfi
  5. Bhuna huwa qeema
  6. Maash ki daal
  7. Khatti daal

I often ask her for her recipes. Usually my husband doesn't ask to me ask her but I like her cooking so I do so myself.

My hubby is Punjabi and me Kashmiri, many dishes were different in the way we cook them.

He actually loves my dishes but we did have some clashes, where "we dont make it like that" "thats not the way i like it" "maa makes it better"

Anyway i have learnt some from MIL who loves cooking and loves to share her recipes aswell, but all the same they have also learnt from me.

1 classic i can remember is Gobi Gosht, we make it in such a way that the gobi florets have to remain intact, whereas they make it to resemle haleem, its all so mashed, same with daal Gosht, our daals have to be cooked but whole, whereas they are again...mashed (easy for me)

Re: Ladies, did you learn to cook from your MIL

I've learned a few dishes from my MIL too...although long distance learning (she's in pakistan and I'm in US), she teaches quite well and gives exact directions... so no failures, not even the first time!!

Re: Ladies, did you learn to cook from your MIL

67 views and only 3 ladies admitted that they learned some dishes from their MIL :hmmm:

I didn't know how to cook at all when I got married so I did ask my mother in law for general tips.

He normally doesn't ask me to cook like his mother does but there are a few dishes that he will eat only if his mother has prepared them (eggplant being one).

otherwise, i still ask her for advice....I wouldn't take offense to asking her for reicpe. after all, main newlywed hoon :LB:

Re: Ladies, did you learn to cook from your MIL

aap chaar saal se newlywed hain ? :konfused:

Re: Ladies, did you learn to cook from your MIL

Why would a woman learn from her MIL when she herself can cook more and better dishes?

btw I learnt few dishes from my bhabi but nothing from MIL.

expecting another Life1 thread from Hareem later today

Zaroor Zaroor, kyon nahi.

I’m not afraid of him. :snooty:

Re: Ladies, did you learn to cook from your MIL

:D

I haven't learned anything from my MIL. She is not here & she rarely cooked back in her days so I hardly doubt I can learn anything from her. Yeah my grandmother in law. Hubby has mentioned many times about how good of a cook she was. I would love to learn something from her.

If my hubby ever asked me to ask MIL for a recipe. I wouldn't be offended. He does mention how salans I make are dry & he is used to more shorbay walay salan. But then he loves whatever I cook. So its all good.

Re: Ladies, did you learn to cook from your MIL

Actually...NOTHING!

I learnt cooking from my mum...when i got married there was not 1 thing i couldnt make, MA...OOOH except KEEMA!! i used to dread that..and honestly took ages to master!!

The reason i didnt learn anything from MIL( other than the fact she is in pak ) is that she is
quite old, and doesnt do any of the cooking ( her other DIL and daughter cook ) and she
also said that shes quite happy wiv my cooking, and so is my hubby,( i know he is not
lying coz he is really picky ) a few times at our rellys houses he tells them whether der is less salt or extra mirch!! ( so rude honestly!! )

Even if my hubby ever asked me to ask MIL, i wouldnt mind at all.

But as my MIL is quite old and is ill most of time, my hubby has learnt to cook from young age in his house ( as both his sisters were married ) he doesnt really have the taalab as such for his moms cooking coz of that...but i always cook at our house...as i love it!! :D

My MIL is in Pak and I never lived with my inlaws so no I did not learn from her. T does not talk about his mother's food but he some times mention his grammy's food which are some special ethnic dishes and I have no idea what they are nor do I care to know.
But he likes my cooking and thinks I am a great cook so all good.

Re: Ladies, did you learn to cook from your MIL

I've learned fried lamb chops and fried fish from her..I don't get offended if husband asks me make something like her..but I think that's because me and her get along well, otherwise who knows...

Haw!! Not even 3 years :naraz:

Re: Ladies, did you learn to cook from your MIL

My mother taught me how to bea good cook but my MIL taught me how to cook like a Pro!! She is awesome in this dept! :)

Re: Ladies, did you learn to cook from your MIL

nopers, learnt myself...

hubz has been away since he was 12.. so it was me who had to learn to not make things according to my taste buds, but something that was different yet awesome.

I wouldnt take offence if he asked me to ask him mum...
