Ladies, did you learn to cook from your MIL

Re: Ladies, did you learn to cook from your MIL

I can cook most things. Mainly due to my passion for cooking and eating! So hubby to be won't be complaining :P if there was a dish that he wanted me to make like his mum I would have no problems asking her for the recipe! There is nothing wrong with making use of the ideas and techniques another person has - I would never take offence to him asking me to make a particular dish like his mum makes.

I grew up with my mums cooking, and I love it... So I understand it will be the same for him!

Re: Ladies, did you learn to cook from your MIL

My hubby is the opposite...he doesn't ask me to ask my MIL...he asks me to ask his MIL!!!! He loves my mum's cooking...I think due to the traditional aspect of it....she uses full ghee, butter, oil, meat etc etc etc

Whereas MIL tends to do golmaal when it comes to cooking.....never consistently making same dish twice!!!!

I have learnt how to cook a few dishes from my MIL, as I couldnt cook at all when I got married and lived with my inlaws for the first 2 years. From my MIL I learnt mostly techniques, from watching her cook. From my mom I got actual recipes. My husband never requested me to ask his mom for any recipes, but if he ever would then no, I wouldnt be offended

You have a talent for understatement…I’m sure I’ve said that to you before but repeating it for the masses doesn’t hurt. :faizy:

I learned a number of dishes from my MIL…

  1. Khatti Daal
  2. Kali Mirch ka Salan
  3. Nested noodles with karHi ka tarka
  4. Chicken ka salan with aloo…yes aloo…I couldn’t believe it either.
  5. Steamed koftay

Most of what I knew I learned from ammi prior to getting married. Luckily she taught me all the difficult dishes like bhagharay baingan etc, etc.

Re: Ladies, did you learn to cook from your MIL

my husband learned to make his favorite dishes from his mother so I dun have to learn from her or cook it for him.. easy peasy!

Re: Ladies, did you learn to cook from your MIL

ive been married 6 months and ive only learned about 3 dishes from my MIL. im pakistani and they are hydro indian so the food is veryyyy different! my husband doesnt ask me to learn anything except her amazing hydro biryani...which im terrified of difficult rice dishes! i wouldnt be hurt if he asked me to learn her cooking, only if he commented that i cant cook it as well (which i doubt any guy would be that dumb to say to their wife!)

my husband loves my cooking, especially since its a novel taste experience for him...and he has always raved about my food even though im a beginner. i suspect he will still rave about a dish i have flopped as well since he is really nice about my effort to cook.

Re: Ladies, did you learn to cook from your MIL

I taught my MIL a few of my signature culinary delights. She thinks I am superhuman.

Re: Ladies, did you learn to cook from your MIL

I am not married so no MIL so no to your question. I learned basic cooking from observing my mom, get new ideas from food network, and rest I love experimenting with food.

Muzna baji, I make chicken ka salan with aloo and with mataar all the time. It is yumious.

Niksik..can you please post your receipe for Chat masala, omelete with darkened onions, kulfi, bhuna huma keema...

thank you so much

Re: Ladies, did you learn to cook from your MIL

Chat Masala:

equal parts of zeera, dry red chillies, whole coriander seeds. Dry roast them until you smell them. Coarsely grind in a spice/coffee grinder. We use this for karahis, over chaats, in sabzis, etc.

Omelette:

Fry 1 medium onion, kutti mirchain (that you have hand crushed) until caremelized...like dark brownish. Beat a couple of eggs, add salt to taste. Pour over the onions and cook on low until cooked on both sides. We usually eat this with paratha.

Kulfi:
1 can condensed milk sweetened
1 can evaporated milk
1 container heavy whipping cream (smaller container)
mixed pista, badam, coarsely ground
kewra essence, a few drops
2 slices of white bread, sides cut

Crush bread in food processor. Add all ingredients in a large mixing bowl and whisk until well mixed. Now freeze. Before serving, boil some falooda noodles, drain and keep over ice. Remove kulfi, pour falooda and sprinkle some nuts.

Bhuna huwa qeema:

11/2 qeema
1 large onion sliced
whole garam masalas...peppercorns, cloves, bay leaf, cinnamon stick, elaichi etc...
2-3 tomatoes chopped
dhaniya, hari mirch
salt and red chillie powder
garlic and ginger chopped

Fry onions until pinkish, add qeema and garam masala. Bhuno a few minutes then add garlic ginger, salt and chilli powder. Bhuno until color has changed and any water has evaporated. Add tomatoes and cover and cook until done. Add dhaniya mirch. Done.

Niks, what is kewra? :bummer:

wowwwww! but niki baji the chat masala recipe u gave, it sounds like a kuta masala not chat masala. chat masala has more ingredients to it than that. kuta masala is awsum for chats and all the other snacks...

Re: Ladies, did you learn to cook from your MIL

We just call it chat masala in our home :smack: You’re right’s it’s just plai ol’ simple kuta masala.

hahaha… yeah no prb.. as long as ur folks understand them

I'm a newly wed (been married 3 yrs, 8 months but still feels new). MIL is in Pakistan, and bless her she ain't a big fan of the kitchen area (although she was when she was younger and unmarried). So haven't learnt anything from her. My FIL is an ace cook and I hope to inshallah one day I will learn to make sindhi biryani from them.

My mum is an ace cook, but doesn't really enjoy it so I taught myself literally everything from cookbooks from the age of 11 years.

Now my other half is a fan of my cooking-according to my MIL my other half doesn't like:
anything that is too modern shorden, little fiddly starters/appertisers anything made of potatoes, rice dishes and desserts

Funny thing is he loves them all.

Re: Ladies, did you learn to cook from your MIL

I learned everything from my MIL! Their taste and style of cooking as totally different from my parental side so I just had to pick up pointers and cook like they did.
