Home Networking

I am using xfinity internet, I found out that in my apartment, I have one ether net outlet in each room.

Then I found out a telecommunication box in closet and I saw four Ethernet cable.

And then there is a 8 port cat5e pannel.

My question:
I am using wireless option of modem router of xfinity. The performance of wireless internet is not good. I want to use Ethernet wall outlet so that devices like streaming TV run on wired network.

What am I missing. I have no idea how to use built in home network.

Re: Home Networking

If your router has enough ports for your equipments, you don't need anything more, you need to take a cable from the router to each equipment (use those built in panels and sockets).

Re: Home Networking

But this is not possible. My TV is faraway from router.

Re: Home Networking

You can get a long cable, or take the router near to your TV, or get switch between your router and TV, or use those sockets and panels built into your wall or get power line Ethernet. Yes, I know this isn't helpful, but without knowing how those sockets and panels are wired we can't help you much.

Re: Home Networking

I want to know connection between router and 8 port panel.

I can see a white Ethernet cable in telecommunication box.

Can any network guy help me to understand this cat5e panel.

Re: Home Networking

This will be last option.

Re: Home Networking

Patch panels work like hubs. All you have to do is, plug those ethernet cables into the patch panel. Anything connected to the outlets in the rooms will be on your LAN. Now, to access internet, your patch panel should be connected to comcast's internet. You can setup your cable modem in the closet to get that access. Looks like you are in for a fun challenge.

Re: Home Networking

Get a good power inline module...

Re: Home Networking

Where is your xfinity gateway at? Is it in that closet? In order for that hub to work is for it to be connected to your xfinity gateway. The way I have mind setup is that I have the xfinity gateway setup in my room next to my TV with a splitter and have wires running to my DVD, computer, etc.

Re: Home Networking

In bedroom.

Connect a WiFi router to your xfinity box.
Connect power line module to that router and use other module for your tv.
Also Do some testing and find out if them spare cable are any good.
How many devices you will be running in wired connection?

I think i am not making sense…Me so hungry and tired :bummer:
Today I was suppose to do post migration support but it ain’t hepening:crying:

Re: Home Networking

Modem and router are in one single box.

Re: Home Networking

I told earlier that in closet there are four ether net cables.
I have two ether net outlet in master bedroom, one in guest room and one in living room.

I discussed my problem with one of my friend how to use my built in home network. He suggested me to buy a network coupler and instructed me to connect router’s built in port in ether net outlet of bedroom.

Then use network coupler with four wires of network cable in closet one by one with laptop. It would help me to identify the source signal from router. Once I found source outlet I labeled that wire ‘Master Bedroom’.

After that I removed laptop from network coupler and connect rest of the three wires one by by with master bedroom by network coupler and I connected my laptop other three outlets one by one. I finally found out which wires belongs to which room. I labeled them.

Network coupler connected the wire from the router to closet outlet to TV.

I also tested other two outlet for future use and labeled one of those.

Re: Home Networking

Above is temporary fix. My future plan is to connect all four ether net cables with Netgear switch so all wall outlet have network signal.
I am considering ooma voip solution. One of the outlet will go with the phone...

Re: Home Networking

Where are the cables from the patch-panel going, I wonder!

Re: Home Networking

Wouldn't it have been cheaper to get that switch instead of the couplers for the closet? Also, doesn't the patch panel have RJ45 sockets?

Re: Home Networking

can you draw a basic sketch of where everything is? :D
