Budget for living in PK

Can someone help me make a monthly estimated budget for living in PK? (this is one for one - two people)

Re: Budget for living in PK

It is relative to living standard. Some people can survive within 10K/month and for some even 200K/month is not enough.

Re: Budget for living in PK

Of course I know that but I am talking about a basic guideline. How much would you spend on food in a week? somthing reasonable, not going to restaurants everyday and making a luxurius dinner, but just some roti salan for dinner, some cereal for breakfast and a sandwich for lunch.
I don't live my life in a lavish style, but i am not cheap either. Just a standard living where you can save but spend on your necessities as well.
For example I was looking at apartments in Karachi and a few of them are 10 000 rupees per month.
I am just looking for an estimated budget so I know what to expect.

Re: Budget for living in PK

Like Xeno said, your question has a very broad based answer, specially for a city like Karachi, where you can find classy apartments in bad areas for 10,000 a month, and bad apartments in a classy area for 50,000 a month.

In Karachi, I reckon, for a middle class family, 25,000 rupees a month is a good figure, where you can expect to spend around 10k on rent and utilities, 5k on food and groceries, and then some money for transportation, which again varies, depending on whether you ride a Civic, or a W-11.

Re: Budget for living in PK

my father in law gets 60.000 and hes deemed very well off my MIL also gets 40.000 and shes also seen as well off....so im assuming 25 is reasonable......

that was 10k for an apartment in defence... would that be a bad apartment in a classy area?

Which areas would you recommend?

how do people survive on an income of 8000 rupees. i thought that was the average income for a Pakistani... though the average pakistani isn't really from the middle-class. anyway thanks for ur help.

any further advice or tips would be appreciated :)

Re: Budget for living in PK

Current prices are:

Cow meat: Rs 200 to 250 per kg.
Mutton: 325 to 375 per kg.
Flour: 30 per kg
Rice: 50-120 per kg
Daals 60-120 per kg
Potatoes: 10-20 per kg
Onion 20-35 per kg
Most green vegetables: 40 per kg
Milk 40-50 per litre

THANK U SOOOOO MUCCCHHHH
this is better. What about chicken?
I prefer vegetables anyway, i eat mutton rarely

how much is travelling? like one bus journey (i will work it out depending on how many buses i have to change) or a rikshaw say from University of Karachi (in Gulshan Iqbal) to Aga Khan University hospital

by the way how do you know the prices when you are in London (just out of curiousity)

Re: Budget for living in PK

I came here in March only.

Chicken becomes very expensive during Ramadan and Eid - even more expensive than Mutton.

The chicken meat wont be less than 250 these days and may shoot up to 350 during Eid.

Oil is also expensive like Rs 80-120 per litre.

The rickshaw may cost Rs 100-130 from KU TO AKUH. Bus jounrey will cost you Rs 20.

I am not going to pk in Eid or Ramzan, but ill keep the tips in mind. Thank you

Re: Budget for living in PK

Well now there are these super markets there like Makro and Metro where you can shop things under one roof and at reasonable prices.

Re: Budget for living in PK

If you have a house and transport of your own , then some where around 30 to 40 k .... !

how come??? I did say a budget for one or two people, they wouldn't need a big house but a one bedroom flat would do. Right now I am not looking for own transport.
your estimate is higher than everybody else. why is that?

Aren't items more expensive here? I mean compared to the stalls or local shops that sell vegetables or meat?

Coz i just moved back to pakistan , few months ago :) it aint me , its reality that speaks :)

Rent varies according to the area and locality .. in a decent mediocre area like Gulshan-e-Iqbal or Gulistan-e-Johar .. for one or two bedrooms apartment , i say you would be talking around atleast 8 to10k :)

I would rather suggest you to get your own transport as soon as you can , as traveling through cabs and rickshaws would probably cost you the same and it comes with security concerns :)

Thank you :) your figures really did shock me. I can't afford a full payment of a car. I am thinking of bringing between 3-6lakh with me. I don't know how much is suitable thats why I was asking for a budget.
Is it difficult to find accomodation in Karachi? Where would you suggest one should look?
