i might be slightly derailing the thread ..but I ask why all these brit/us singers/pop stars and actresses end up being either in rehab because of drug addictions and dangerous narcotics use, alcoholics...have repeated broken marriages, divorces, affairs. Aren't they the true representatives of the liberal world? Infact I would say that about all celebrities desi non-desis..why despite having all sorts of freedom do they have the most screwed up personal lives?

Back to the topic:
the only reason I wouldn't want to marry off my daughter to an alim/imam would be if our daughter hasn't been grown up in a super religious atmosphere or if she herself is a qualified individual with a professional degree. Wouldn't want spirituality clashes b/w both of them leading to resentment and unnecessary quarrels. I would want a like minded boy for my daughter who is clearly an average, educated good Muslim and wants to strive to study *deen *in more detail. Thus the journey of spirituality if undertaken together would lead to a much stronger bond IMO.

I wouldn't go for any extreme ended person for my child:
Aalim/Maulvi etc. - No,* (mostly they end up having extremist religious views)*
Rock star/Pop star etc. - No (mostly they are too liberal minded)

I'd prefer some one with a mediocre not extreme ended personality ..engineer, doctor, pilot, etc all would do who id decent, religious & open-minded to reasonable limits.

If it's a proper Imam who has the right understanding of Islam and knows the role of women in our religion, then I'd be flattered.

More than anything though, I'd see if my daughter is compatible with him. If this is something she wants then I wouldn't have any problems.

Btw, none of the proper scholars, shiekhs, imaams I've known through my masjid/community are 'conservative' or oppressive towards their wives. That's just a big misconception IMO.

Really? Like I said earlier, when dumb people have lots of money, they do lots of dumb things. Also, who's to say what's better - being sent to rehab for doing stupid things or not having the freedom to do anything? Drug addiction has nothing to do with liberalism or conservatism. Both types are just as likely to get addicted to narcotics.

I don't think Amy Winehouse (with the incredible talent she had and the profound lyrics she used to write) could be considered dumb or someone with a real low IQ .

Ok say if I have a bonfire going on in my backyard, I could try stopping my little one from going too close and I could seriously scold/lecture him about not crossing a certain line and not go near him..(mind you he's only let's say 2.5 or about 3 years of age) Ok fair enough. What if I am not around or for some unavoidable circumstances I have to leave him by the bonfire unattended for even a few minutes.

What guarantee is there that my naive little one would still respect the boundary, limit or wouldnt accidently and unintentionally not get too close as to burn himself. Ok 3 years is still an age when a child is sensible enough. What about a crawling 10 month old baby. Can I tell him not to go touch and leave him unattended completely? obviously NO. So I would have to spend the entire time fussing and being anxious about the possible outcomes if my child gets too close.

What should I do then..be sensible enough and not have a bonfire or any burning fire in the first place right? I don't know how poor or good this analogy may be. But why make such things even available to someone who's immature and expect them to stay away from it. Porn, drugs, legalising alcohol, selling alcohol in the nearby spaces.

You'd say they have laws that they don't sell alcohol below 18 years of age. Couldn't they bypass that law easily?

Aahhh totally thread derailed ..but I had to express my point of view i.e. easily available commodities are more likely to be misused and abused.
