Complete bull..Depression/paranoia/heart diseases run high among Desi women. I really wonder why... American women have more self-esteem than they need. They are borderline narcissist.
Borderline?! Lol American women are so spoiled it's ridiculous. Especially the ones my age (younger ones).
i might be slightly derailing the thread ..but I ask why all these brit/us singers/pop stars and actresses end up being either in rehab because of drug addictions and dangerous narcotics use, alcoholics...have repeated broken marriages, divorces, affairs. Aren't they the true representatives of the liberal world? Infact I would say that about all celebrities desi non-desis..why despite having all sorts of freedom do they have the most screwed up personal lives?
Back to the topic:
the only reason I wouldn't want to marry off my daughter to an alim/imam would be if our daughter hasn't been grown up in a super religious atmosphere or if she herself is a qualified individual with a professional degree. Wouldn't want spirituality clashes b/w both of them leading to resentment and unnecessary quarrels. I would want a like minded boy for my daughter who is clearly an average, educated good Muslim and wants to strive to study *deen *in more detail. Thus the journey of spirituality if undertaken together would lead to a much stronger bond IMO.
I don't know how this became a liberal vs conservative thread but the pop stars who are in rehab etc do these things to themselves. That's the key difference here. Of course if they lived in a more conservative society maybe the customs of their society would keep them straight. The point is too extreme in either direction is bad. Liberals believe in freedoms but I believe that people can't control themselves and needs rules, religious or otherwise, to keep them from hurting themselves. On the other hand, most conservatives I've met are more judgmental and close minded than I would like.
As for the question on hand, I wouldn't be comfortable letting me daughter marry and Imam. I think that the inability to view religion critically is implicit in a very religious person's mindset. If I were to question or criticize religion they would, at best, get defensive. I will also ask, what's the criteria for someone to become a spiritual leader? This goes for priest etc too. Not all Imams/priests are unqualified but I believe the majority are. They simply parrot the views of others and I wouldn't want my grandchildren to inherit that close mindedness.
Just because a person has great talent doesn’t mean he/she’s equally smart in other areas. People with great talents very often lack common sense. A scientist is just as likely to get addicted to drugs as any celebrity provided they had issues they couldn’t cope with.
Yeah, that’s a really bad analogy. I could apply the same analogy to the idea of God. Why put people on earth and then put all kinds of temptations and expect them to not indulge in 'em? Why ask Adam and Eve to not touch the tree when the tree could have just been removed?
See my analogy above.. Porn and drugs are both readily available. Wouldn’t you call Mujra or what the Mughals did in the old times as something similar to a porno? Drugs are provided on earth by God (right?) and people have found a more dangerous way to use them . Should you blame the God or people? Pick your answer..
Sure and they do bypass that law everyday. I am not sure what your point is here.
Let’s open a new thread.
Either extreme is unnecessary but if I had to pick, I would undoubtedly pick Liberalism.
I went to an eid event and saw my hubby's friend today, he's a professional Qari, and very handsome too, but he's also a chemical engineer and plays Arabian guitar like instrument as a hobby....cool eh?
He recited Quran and it was beautiful. So if the Imam is cool like him then every parent should happily marry off the daughter with that sort of person.
Is not that sad that we want our imams to work 18 hour days and we dont pay them at all. Dont you think that many people would consider their kids to become Imam (Alim) if it was a lucrative job?
Definitely...priests get paid loads of money, one of the main priest i know has his own mansion, oh and everyone respects him too.
Because then that strip club can come to your neighborhood too. If you ever have kids, would you be okay with that stuff in yoru neighborhood?
Okay so I don’t know why this is such a debate btwn liberal and conservatives. Honestly I think both sides have their benefits and both sides have things that are messed up…why can’t there be a middle road?
