Nothing harm in flattening the back of head, it's very common in Pakistan, even simple head support works for me just make sure baby is lying straight
This is bad parenting advice in my books ... people said "Haw sar kyon nahein banaya?" They wanted us to put a brick behind the heads of babies so they would grow up looking like pancake faces ... I want my kids to have a round 3D cranium thank you very much ... not blocks for heads ... Some people over do it and their kids have these points on the heads.
Re: Worst piece of parenting advice you were ever given.
My Bengali Muslim mate was in his teens and his mum walked in to his room and he had no clothes on ... she told him off and then told his dad ... They asked him why he slept naked and he told them when he was much younger (about 8 or 9) he remembered his dad telling him that if he went to bed with his trousers on then his "central regions" would not grow ... so to ensure his central regions would grow he made sure he went to bed without trousers on ... Matter of fact was that his dad (a doctor) meant him to take off his jeans and wear his bed clothes not to go to sleep naked ... that is advice that back fired ...
Re: Worst piece of parenting advice you were ever given.
my relatives told to put plate n rice bags for perfect head shape but i didnt do anything....
he's 6months now n his head is in perfect shape....Alhumdulillah
there's also shaping the nose by massaging it....and ur baby will have a perfect shaped nose....thankgod i didnt do that massage....
Re: Worst piece of parenting advice you were ever given.
Well the brick thing I heard it first time, I was taking about simple pillow filled with rye or simple head support but at the end of the day it’s parents choice wht they want to do :k:
Re: Worst piece of parenting advice you were ever given.
An aunty I know did the nose thing on her daughter. Her daughter now has a phooli hui naak. It looks so bad.
And the sar shaping thing. EVERYYYONE used to give me grief about my daughter’s head shape when she was just a little baby. I didn’t even care about what they said. Told me to make a mitti ka gola or something like that and put her in her
Her head got round on it’s own. Didn’t even do anything. Now she has a round head mA.
Re: Worst piece of parenting advice you were ever given.
^yeah i read somewhere that when babies start to sit their heads comes too a good shape by itself.....
and for the nose also....when they r born their cartilage is thin n weak....n then slowly it becomes stronger when they grow up n the nose will be in shape whichever Allah has chosen.....
Re: Worst piece of parenting advice you were ever given.
i've heard the head and nose thing.
we did do the head thing with my baby (put a rice pillow under her head) and mashallah her head is perfectly shaped :). it makes a difference (as sara516 pointed out) when the hair grows in.
a guy i knew - his grandma did the nose thing on him and he has a really straight "thikka naak" whereas his siblings have the pakora nose.
wierdest thing i heard....drinking orange juice will make you baby white. heard this from a lady who has 4 kids...3 eldest are "dark" (same skin tone as both mom and dad) and the baby is rather fair skinned. apparently she drank gallons of OJ !
Re: Worst piece of parenting advice you were ever given.
oh, i forgot the wierdest one!!!
putting a sharp object (knife, razor, scissors, etc) covered in some something under the rice bag, pillow or whatever under the baby's head to ward off evil or prevent the baby from getting scared when sleeping!
anyone heard of this?
Re: Worst piece of parenting advice you were ever given.
Yikes!! How is that even safe ![]()

lol i did this!!!!!
my mil told me n i couldnt refuse her order....so i did....
n it didnt help.....he was always waking up scared....
babies get scary dreams more often n its normal...
Re: Worst piece of parenting advice you were ever given.
YES, the sharp object thing.
my fil did it, because my baby, at the time 4months, CRIED. ONCE.
Re: Worst piece of parenting advice you were ever given.
^ wouldn't that be considered shirk? you're putting faith in a sharp object to ward away your baby's nightmares instead of praying about it? the 4 Quls and Ayat al Kursi, for eg, are meant to be protective.
Re: Worst piece of parenting advice you were ever given.
^it should be haraam!!! any quote or hadith available about it?
Re: Worst piece of parenting advice you were ever given.
I think I must be living in the stone ages, because I'm struggling to comprehend why on Earth you would need to "shape" a babies head. Are they born square-headed or something(?!)
Re: Worst piece of parenting advice you were ever given.
^ lol i was wondering the same. it seems a flat head is considered more attractive than a round one?
Re: Worst piece of parenting advice you were ever given.
well babies skulls are soft and tend to be assymetric and have flat spots etc after sleeping on their back a lot, but provided the baby isnt lying down all the time, it will gradually round up nicely - there is absolutely no need to make a baby use a special rice pillow etc.
as for are babies born square headed, mmm.. wait till you have yours. many are born with funky conical heads, esp ones that have been thru long labor. but that is the way its meant to be. :P
Re: Worst piece of parenting advice you were ever given.
^that!
