Really?
Re: Women Oppressed in Islam??
I don’t know why ppl look at it like it is something new…it has been there for 1000s of years…women have always covered themselves from head to toe in all religions that I know of…
Re: Women Oppressed in Islam??
Hmm . Many of the women there are nuns. I don't think it is covering the hair, it is more the issue of covering head to toe and enforced as a compulsory obligation in Saudi and the Taliban and other religious countries that makes people associate muslim women covering up = oppression without choice.
Re: Women Oppressed in Islam??
Not all religions. In certain ones, it is considered bad luck to cover your hair
Re: Women Oppressed in Islam??
And those who do not cover head are very lucky.
Re: Women Oppressed in Islam??
The other women wear themselves, muslim women are forced to.

I said all religions that I know of...so which religions are those that deem it is bad luck?

In Hinduism, there is no religious injunction to cover the hair. I am aware that women in North India and Bollywood cover their hair as a mark of respect but it is more of a cultural influence made popular and followed since Mughal times when Hinduism and Islam came into close contact with each other than a religious practice. If you go east and to the south especially, it is considered bad luck to cover your head except as relief from heat in summer. This is because till the 19th and early 20th centuries widows were tonsured when they lost their husband and they would cover their shorn head with their saree. For other women to cover their head implied widowhood. Even in temples, women do not cover their hair. So even if widows are no longer tonsured today, people still believe that covering head can invite spousal misfortune. Please don't quote Zakir Naik on how hijab is prescribed in Hinduism, I can debunk it. Having said that I don't have anything against covering the hair if it is part of your religion, I only don't understand the rationale or concept of covering head to toe. I must confess that total covering to me as a non muslim screams oppression in my thoughts. Just my honest words.
Re: Women Oppressed in Islam??
Still no idea why head covering is perceived as 'oppression'?
If covering head is oppression then not letting a woman cover her head due to idea of 'bad luck' is also oppression.
"Haaye Haaye Tera Miaan Mar Jaayega!" :D
Mandatory uniform in schools, police and army is oppression.
Mandatory suit and tie for men in some meetings is oppression.
Any specific dress code, specific shoes requirement for restaurant/work place etc. is oppression.
Arguing against it to have women feel oppressed is oppression!!

all this is only oppression if the person is also forced into any of this. he/she can choose to pick a school that doesnt have a uniform he/she doesnt like, does not have to work for the police or army. or work in jobs that have a tie or suit requirement.
its not about dress-code as much as the lack of choice and being labeled as someone bad or worse, punished.

Whole lot of majority women who wear hijab and cover their head are doing it out of their belief, but some think it is wrong and try to make them feel 'oppressed'.
"Bechaari, Kitni Mazloom hai"
Not everyone has a choice to change the school and there IS no choice for army and police etc. not to wear a uniform and they do get and can get punished if refuse to comply.
There are hotels and restaurants which do not allow men to even walk around without a tie and dress jacket in the lobby area or dining room having dinner. Sure they have a choice to choose other places but making it mandatory is what can be considered wrong by people.
The point here is that why make it such a negative thing if a woman wears hijab or covers head if all above examples are considered acceptable??

I am not a Muslim too, but seeing someone covered from head to toe is no big deal for me...the only time I feel it is oppression is only if I know that they are doing it just for appearance, for family and friends sake...and when they go some where else...they take it off...
Thanks for the explanation on Hinduism...wasn't aware of that...coz all you see in Bollywood, and all my Indian friends cover their hair...

Re: Women Oppressed in Islam??
So people actually decide whether or not a woman is empowered on the basis of how much she covers up? Shabash. Guess we all need to follow in the footsteps of Veena ji in order to be considered liberated then.

Re: Women Oppressed in Islam??
Some of Islam's followers have started forcing their views on others. So much so, that they beat, subjucate and even kill, their fellow muslims, if they deviate from this so called path.
if Allah, alone can judge humans, why have the Islamist miltants, taken over that role of God.
if Islam has a poor image, then the majority is to blame, for they do hardly anything to curb the actions of these miltant few.
islam is followed by only 1 in 5 people in this world, and yet they kill, murder, blow up an equal number of co- religionists as of people from other religions. islam is not seen as a religion of peace, but as an intolerant sect of people trying to push themselves & others into the dark ages.
Re: Women Oppressed in Islam??
^there are and have always been militants in every religion I know of...
The Christians had them too...but when they were doing all this..it was all ok....and ofcoz there was no media to report about it...they also had a time where they said "BLASPHEMY!!!!!!!!!", followed most probably by a "Off with his/her head"...
and some Buddhist monks and few of their followers these days are making some waves too...they are also murdering innocent ppl...destroying ppl's property in the name of religion...where as Buddhism is also a religion of peace...in Sri Lanka..they are called the Bodu Bala Sena...they love to beat up Christians and Muslims....
and I think India has some awesome group called The Shiv Sena...am I right? If I am not mistaken..it means the army of Lord Shiva? I don't think they have a very sweet reputation either...
So every country and every well known religion has a few looney toons...doesn't mean you label the whole sect as intolerant.
Just to clarify...am not a Muslim.
