Woman leads Muslim prayer service in Toronto

Re: Woman leads Muslim prayer service in Toronto

Not strange, nor forbidden. But no curtain is also acceptable.

Re: Woman leads Muslim prayer service in Toronto

  1. Some of the view that a woman can lead other women in prayer. However, she cannot stand in front of them, but in the same row.

    1. A woman who leads men and women in prayer, her prayer and the prayer of other women would be accepted, but not of the men, as they are not supposed to have a woman lead them in prayer.
    2. The hadith that many use as a reference of Umm Waraqah leading other men and boys in prayer is a weak one. If it does happen to be sahih, it was only allowed under a special case and was only limited to her.

Here’s a detailed response that I came across that is worth reading carefully:

Following are a few short responses dealing with the issue of women leading prayer.

Re: Woman leads Muslim prayer service in Toronto

We always choose to believe what we wish to believe. If you come across another hadith that you like, you wont make this comment. Instead, you will claim that to disobey that hadith is worthy of state punishment.

Re: Woman leads Muslim prayer service in Toronto

I can honestly tell you that I have been swayed towards ahadith and opinions that were weak, but I did not act upon them (from what I can remember), alhamdulillah. The same schoalrs also by Allah’s (SWT) Will kept me away from acting upon those ahadith. Also, whatever I have not properly followed is because of my own weakness and shortcomings and not because I hold it to be false.

Therefore, the assumption that I would not make the same comment about ahadith that fit me is totally wrong, at least in my case.

If a weak Muslim like myself could accept and try to abide by the shareeh and Sunnah, then there is absolutely no doubt that those with knowledge and eeman would also abstain from accepting ahadith that may be false to fit their purposes and rejecting the saheeh ahadith that do not suit them.

Re: Woman leads Muslim prayer service in Toronto

Irshad manji is a muslim from canada maybe she strarted a new cult.

Re: Woman leads Muslim prayer service in Toronto

According to Islam, women cant lead in prayer specially they cant lead men.

Why?

When Prophet migrated to Madinah, as you know he and his companions built the first mosque there. Then they decided the call of prayer (Azaan). Sayyedna Umer was told by Allah the words of call (Azaan) in dream. So he told the words of call to Sayyedna Mohammad as a suggestion when people were discussing the way to call the people to prayer. And Sayyedna Mohammad choose his suggestion.

So the system of prayer started. In that time women and men offered prayer side by side. Sayyedna Umer also dont like it. For the security of women, to keep them pious and nobel.
So Allah ordered women to stay in houses and also declared that men have over hand on women.

So if a woman is leading prayer to men, it is not Islamic.

Got it?

Re: Woman leads Muslim prayer service in Toronto

OMG,

No one stands beside the Imam who is leading prayer. Needless to say, the reason why it's not done is that there are no credible instances of it being done during the life of the Prophet.

Re: Woman leads Muslim prayer service in Toronto

^ Because Imam is a leader, and it is symbolic. Have you seen a herd of animals, even they follow a single pig or goat or camel and march behind them. These are silly little things and are not really that important.

Re: Woman leads Muslim prayer service in Toronto

why is it that when you are trying to discuss a contemporary issue facing religion, the only ideas that come forth are from 1500 yrs ago? Women didn't also run more than 26 miles back then, they are npw running marathons in Punjab. change with the times bachchoos!!

Re: Woman leads Muslim prayer service in Toronto

Because unlike any other Social issue (be it governance, or even women driving) the core ritual in question was formulated 1400 years ago. If this were any other issue, I would be much more relaxed. This, however, should be about how we worship God, not some gender political game.

Re: Woman leads Muslim prayer service in Toronto

^ and that too is nothing unique..cut-n-paste of existing paradigms in arabia.

Re: Woman leads Muslim prayer service in Toronto

change with the times they say…aray bhaee, if truth were to change with times it would be palin expedience wudnt it?..trust God to know the difference na…and whats this bukbuk abt women runig and flying and jumping, trust imamat to be a lil more in than that…

Re: Woman leads Muslim prayer service in Toronto

^ it would be true if it is was the "truth" and universal...but it ain't so its got to change. the only thing universal is the spirituality, not the ways to attain it. so face east or west or have prayers led by men or women...if it is universal then shouldn't matter..unless it is a concept made by men, for men and of men...which semitic traditions are all about.

you are confusing truth with faith..a simple yet often misguided notion among the bachchey loag here.

Re: Woman leads Muslim prayer service in Toronto

Pindi, what, in your opinion, Muslim men will do if all the Muslim women left Islam for the second hand treatment meted out to them? Do you think they (the Men) will accept it as a failure of a system that treats its followers based upon gender, or would they (the Men) turn into (lets say for argument sake) Homosexuals.

This is the exactly the kind of male chauvinistic garbage that results into following practices so widespread in some parts of Pakistan. Read the following news item. It is sickening. This is what the Mullahs are telling everyone the women’s appropriate place is. Not to lead prayers, not to be respected, but put in a mental hospital. :subhan:

http://dawn.com/2005/07/03/nat11.htm

PESHAWAR, July 2: Many neurotic patients who recover at the Mental Hospital after getting treatment experience a relapse as their relatives and family members never turn up to take them home, doctors and psychiatrists at the hospital said. Nasreen, 25, a frail patient, was brought to the hospital several times since June, 2004. It has been more than three months since her 60-year-old husband, a resident of Sakha Kote last visited her and she is waiting for him to take her home.

“My husband lured me with gifts and brought me here. He also gave me a little money. I have not seen him since,” Nasreen told Dawn at the female ward of the Mental Hospital housed in an old building next to the Central Prison, Peshawar.

Nasreen, wife of Abdul Karim, said that she was married at the age of 15. Her in-laws and husband used to beat her over small domestic tiffs. Nasreen’s parents are dead and her two married sisters never visited her.

“My husband has left me here and my family doesn’t even enquire about me,” she lamented.

The record at the hospital revealed that its medical superintendent had even once officially requested the SHO of Mardan police station to help in the handing over of Nasreen to her relatives. No one from the family showed up to receive her after repeated requests by the hospital.

Re: Woman leads Muslim prayer service in Toronto

I just cannot see how a woman leading prayer would offend god. It makes one think about the validity of this version of god if killing of an apostate is allowed but a woman wanting to lead a spiritual congregation is not.

Re: Woman leads Muslim prayer service in Toronto

Wrong.

Islam gave rights to women when none existed back then. The Prophet’s wife Aisha, was a busniess woman. So trust me , she was hardly the meek oppressed type.

The women back then were also encouraged to ask questions, and increase their knowledge.

Yet even a woman like Aisha never led prayers.

The Sunnah is the way the Prophet (SAW) lived his life, and his life is an example to us.

So now suddenly out of the blue women are leading prayers.

And people think its time to move on , because the fact that it was not done back in the Prophet’s time, doesnt matter. You lot honestly think the Prophet or people back then didnt know anything about gender equality?

And you folks are telling me I have been lacking and have fallen behind because for hundreds of years a male imam has been leading prayers.

Re: Woman leads Muslim prayer service in Toronto

Which is where core rituals are extracted from. What is wrong with this particular ritual as it is?

Re: Woman leads Muslim prayer service in Toronto

How we perform namaz is harldy about the “truth”. It has been defined for us, not discovered by us. Again, let us keep our eyes on the ball here.

Re: Woman leads Muslim prayer service in Toronto

Wrong. Even after the introduction of Islam, Muslim (Arab) culture was a male dominated patriarchal system. That doesn’t imply women were put in cages or on leashes, but men DOMINATED society in every aspect. To say that post-Muhammed society was the end-all of civilization is naive. You don’t go from the most backwards society to the most evolved society in a span of mere decades.

Man (and woman) have evolved in 1500 years. If we didn’t we wouldn’t be any better than apes. To consider any evolvement of society as innovation will keep you in the dark ages.
