It just says to beat women up, lightly was added by some other translators to tone down the message.

Re: Woman Beating in Quraan
[Off topic] What if your man is out of Islam, can the wife beat him up? (of course slightly). And yes, don’t even start on "oh men are so mazloom blah blah they always get beaten by their wives (not physically always but also by their cranky pana) etc etc. Men are anything but mazloom. Give me a break. I just read someone saying something similar above or on the previous pages. So, if your man gives you 10 bachay in 8 years and still says oh my wife is really harsh on me…wellllll maybe you need to think again who is harsh on who u know ![]()
Re: Woman Beating in Quraan
The fact of the matter is, all of the Quran is prescriptive rather than discriptive. If the Quran says do this or do that, you have to abide by it rather than lean towards your tafsirs and stuff. it's a simple measure. You dare not invoke "historical context" to a book which is supposed to be a guide for all people of all times. If the Quran was a guide for all people of all times, it couldn't be outdated, now could it?
So beat your women .....
Go to Jihad ( and none of that internal mumbo jumbo thing ).......
kill the Infidels......
and all that jazz .....
.......virgins await you in paradise!
(no beating allowed here though.... )
Re: Woman Beating in Quraan
Blitz
So what if the Qur'aan gives the prescription to beat? It's no point discussing the context of ayats with you because of your blind hatred towards the Faith.
Now that we've agreed on this point, what else can you bring to the table as a debate. Nothing.
Start looking for another angle my friend. But before you do, also look into other Faiths and see what they prescribe and condone. You'll be surprised, but still stubborn with all sorts of excuses.
Re: Woman Beating in Quraan
I think all tafaaseer already explained that. Beating is the last thing to do and when it is said Beating, it’s not *that *beating:halo:
Re: Woman Beating in Quraan
Tsk Tsk! Temper Temper!!,
Brings to mind a tale we have all read or heard of:
“When the Beast was shown a mirror, it roared with rage, not so much at its own hediousness but at the mirror, smashing it to pieces.”
Look at it whichever angle you choose, but make sure you yourself don’t condone the prescription, even if it claims itself to be divine.
Bring on something of other faiths so we may discuss it instead of surmising what they condone and what they don’t.
And for your information, we are not having a monologue here so to say that we have agreed, or dissagreed on any ginven point is considered an assumption.
P.S: Hatred?? what are you talking about?
You hardly know me how can you assume I will be stubborn?
Re: Woman Beating in Quraan
did u mean that i use multiple nicknames or a lot of ppl use my nick?? ![]()
Re: Woman Beating in Quraan
Yeah, the whole thing is somebody’s concoction…
Re: Woman Beating in Quraan
'The best of you are those who are the best to their wives' - prophet's hadees
'Your wives' are a trust on to you, so treat them well', prophet's final Khutba, indicating that God will question men on how they treat their wives.
The prophet never raised a hand to his wives.
The injunction to hit a wife (lightly) is only when there is a concerns over sexual impropiety, in the case of a man being impoper then it is societies' responsibilty to correct him - which could well involve a beating.
If you fail to take the hadees with the Quran, then you will always have difficult questions to answer.
And finally 'Whatever the messenger gives you, take it and whatever he prohibits you from, refrain from it' Surah 59, this applies to the orders the prohet has given.
Re: Woman Beating in Quraan
For that (sexual improprity) do you need 4 male eyewtiness .. oh you don’t it is just over “concerns” of sexual imporpiety. What a load of garbage.
Re: Woman Beating in Quraan
desibanda: that you use multiple nicknames.
Serendipiti: I agree w/Madhanee - you can't hit her because ur suspicious - first off you need 4 witnesses (well in those days at least - i think a tape recording equates to an infinite number of witnesses) and then you have to take it to the authorities for judgement and then the appropriate state punishment.
YOU dont have the right to hit her - she'll get punished enough for her crime if she was cheating on you.
I agree w/Pakabroad's analysis that the translation is wrong from the get-go. Although, I'm no scholar on arabic.
Re: Woman Beating in Quraan
Pyaricigudia - u don't hit her at all. That's my point.
Suspicions are not enough cos as madhanee says u do need 4 witnesses.
Re: Woman Beating in Quraan
What? and risk contradicting Allah’s ways set out in the Quran??
Re: Woman Beating in Quraan
Bismillah,
Brothers and sisters, Islam is the only true religion and has the best teachings without a doubt in every single teaching it contains.
Allah orders us to live a righteous and organized life. To raise family to build a community and build a safe society.
And as the body has a head, the family also has a head that manages it and directs it to what's right.
Prophet Muhammad taught us and ordered us to be good family people towards the spouse and he said:
والنبي صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول: "خيركم، خيركم لأهله".
Those who treat their spouse (wife) best are among those who have high ranks.
The prophet specified those with high ranks that are upright and treat their wife with good manners. Also the prophet said: "Allah orders you to take good care of your wives"
"إن الله تعالى يوصيكم بالنساء خيرا"
And the Prophet also said: "take good care of your wives, for, the wife is created from a cruked rib and if you came adjust or straighten that rib, it will break, and if you leave it it will remain cruked, hence take good care with wives".
Our religion is just and fair.
Allah knows best.
Re: Woman Beating in Quraan
Any book of law/ guidelines, ancient or modern, if you notice, typically has a triad. 'Liberty, Equality and Fraternity', for example. The third is typically the one that places a leash on the other two. Thus my rights to liberty and equality are mellowed down by the need for/ sense of fraternity for the rest of the people (courtesy Charles Handy).
Very few of us really know about the major religions, but I am willing to bet that all of them are full of such triads just as most morden constituions are. Hence it may not be appropriate to take one specific phrase and take a literal view of it. The whole Book is the message, not parts of it. If I can take a specific phrase and claim that Islam does not, say, discriminate against women, I should be willing to concede if you take another phrase in isolation and try to prove the contrary.
I am reminded of what I was told some 15 years ago. Apparently smuggling is not haram because it has not been proscribed by the Quran (apologies if I am wrong). I was amazed by how some people could take things so literally.
Re: Woman Beating in Quraan
so now tell us verizon tidday what do you think from this useful exercise and down pour of knowledge from scholars. your conclusions should be aired as your questions are, so go rite ahead
Re: Woman Beating in Quraan
… and “beat women up” was added by you to exaggerate it
Re: Woman Beating in Quraan
Sexual impropriety?? Wouldn't the first step of sending them to beds apart increase the likelihood of more sexual impropriety by the promiscuous woman who is not satisfied?
Re: Woman Beating in Quraan
ummmm it's not about her.. it's about you. if she's being promiscuous.. u don't want to be like "who's your daddy" to your next child..
