Men are the maintainers of women because Allah has made some of them to excel others and because they spend out of their property; the good women are therefore obedient, guarding the unseen as Allah has guarded; and (as to) those on whose part you fear desertion, admonish them, and leave them alone in the sleeping-places and beat them; then if they obey you, do not seek a way against them; surely Allah is High, Great

I was trying to look for refrence but couldnt find any right now, especially considering i am working on an assigment but I know that by beating it doesnt mean u take a baseball bat n start beating the crap out of em..its like to humiliate but its not like u can go around beating or humiliating your wife because she didnt obey ur orders of making chicken tikka for u..its about guarding the unseen and it doesnt say u can just go ahead and beat her

the next verse also says that u can bring in two arbiters n settle the whole thing..

hmmm let me find refrences to the beating thing though

Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, because Allah has given the one more (strength) than the other, and because they support them from their means. Therefore the righteous women are devoutly obedient, and guard in (the husband’s) absence what Allah would have them guard. As to those women on whose part ye fear disloyalty and ill-conduct, admonish them (first), (Next), refuse to share their beds, (And last) beat them (lightly); but if they return to obedience, seek not against them Means (of annoyance): For Allah is Most High, great (above you all). 004.034

Here the translator is mild. He says, ‘beat your woman but lightly’.

Yusufali’s translation does put (lightly) in parenthesis; however other translations don’t so I’d take it that YusuALi tried to tone down the message comapred to Pickthal or SHakir where they simply translated. However my question was on what exaclty is implied by beating them.

What do you mean by humiliate a woman. Why would you humiliate anyone for that matter? Specially in light of; that this is the Holy Quraan we are talking about which talks about patience, love, respect, tolerance and other glad tidings.

Approximate 100 countries' constitutions have made it clear that Man and Women are equal. These constitution have thrown away all dust of fudalist system.

^^ I see that should leave 92 countries without equal rights (its about half the countries that still think man is superior). However constitution and holy book are different, so if we the muslims were to enforce sharia in true form then women can kiss it goodbye, even a woman khalifah, would be subjected to beating by wazirs, if she doesnt listen to man.

YEah so good that cat got the tongue. I guess google is busy coming up with tafsirs and explanations of Allah (swt) words, I guess Allah (swt ) was very cryptic in Quraan that we need tafsir and Hadith.

^ MAYBE Allah's word was revealed thousands of years ago...MAYBE it wasnt revealed in our first language..MAYBE it wasnt releaved in the times or the culture we live in..thats why we need translation, tafsirs n hadiths

its not about beating your wife, its men like you who like to use ayas from the Quran for your own freaken benefit. Its about wat to do with a disloyal and disobidient wife. And in the next ayah it does say if things cant be solved then call two ppl of the family and sort it out. How clear can it get? And wat happens these days? if the wife is disloyal, the husband does the same, they fight like freaken animals, ruin their kids lives n leave each other find other ppl n the cycle keeps going..now if you not talkin to your wife for a few days can fix her, then u forgive her n live with her..which one is better? AND beating your wife is NOT encouraged its ONLY allowed under certain circumstances

but u seem convinced that islam allow u to beat ur wife..why the hell did u even ask the question then? stay in your jahliyat mode forever!

i am kinda curious - what if the man misbehaves and is not faithful etc. is the woman allowed to do the same, namely:

1.not sleep with him
2.beat the sh!t outta him

or is she gonna hire some goons for that cos in most cases, man is stronger.. interesting...
