It means you have a right to give them a chaper if they're disobedient. Which means if they don't listen to you when you're stopping them from doing something that's not right from a religious point of view...for example...hijab, going out without telling him, etc. If she doesn't feel like cooking because of her sickness and you beat her up for that...you don't have a right then coz it's not something thats farz on women and will make them kafir if they do it, you can also get something to eat from a restuarant.

Can I get a gupshup expert opinion on this part of the verse? If the woman is also a contributor to the home income ( a trend definitely on the raise in the Muslim world ) would this verse not apply anymore?

What's the big deal about the ayat! It means exactly what it states.
But when reading 4:34 carefully one realizes that it actually prohibits abuse and beating of women by using the best psychological approach.
The advise to first talk and then avoid sexual contact, provides the necessary time and space for both parties to cool off, reason, examine the problem and reach a favorable agreement for both of them. Abuse of a wife will not happen if the man learns to follow the clear commandments of God in this verse and in the order decreed. Abuse will only happen when a man does not follow these commandments, and thus fails to cool off and reason with himself or with his wife.
Sura 4, where we read 4:34, entitled "The Women," is one of the longest chapters in the Quran. It deals with many of the rights and responsibilities of women, rights that were first available to western women only a few decades ago, and some that still aren't. The theme of this Sura is to defend women's rights, and countering injustice and oppression of women. Thus, any interpretation of verses in Sura 4 must be in favor of the women, not the other way around?

and where in ayah it says that the beating is out of anger? Please, explain… What I have read is that it is when the women goes against the commands of Islam. can’t be out of anger. It will be for correction.

Not to sound barbaric or insensetive, but you need to take matters in hand if thing are not settling with talks. Latooon ke bhot batoon ne nahi mantey. 
Similarly, many women beat their husband regularly, it may sound to funny but it is a reality.
As it is not forbidden to beat husband to keep him tame, in Islam.
Do we have any verse which forbids wife from beating husband to teach him a lesson ??
No !
So if something is not forbidden, it is allowed. Case solved.

^ I agree with you when you say that a woman is totally allowed to slap her husband around to keep him tame.
And likewise, if the verse if followed to the T - that is talk to her first, then withhold sex
BTW verizon - that WORKS - men just don't think to try it because they're worried that it means they're not getting any either. If your wife is coming on to you, try brushing her off (which means a lot of self-control really), and then see what happens. It drives women up the wall - they don't get the sex they want - and if they want it and are asking for it, then they REALLY REALLY want it - and its also like a slap in their face - an insult. It tells them, you as a man, at the moment, find them repulsive and unattractive. They of course attribute it to their recent behavior and feel REALLY bad.
But you know, you men, if you did what the Quran asked you to, you'd be surprised really. But no!!!! We must always think of our ying-yangs first, of course!

But why concentrate on one verse alone? And you’re obviously going to be angry if they go against Islam right?
And I dont think all these men should be concentrating on the beating part. Theres much more you’re supposed to do other than that.
Anyhow I personally dont believe in hitting. Its degrading to yourself and the other person. I believe that everything can be done through the brain and not the hands as far as this issue of making sure your wife/hubby doesnt do anything against Islam. I would never raise my hand at my hubby and if he dared to try it on me I would leave him right there and then.

when it comes to religion, dont compare it with ur own secular thoughts of what is right or wrong cuz for someone who is not religious at (regardless of which religion u belong to) everything about that religion will seem wrong to u. when you discuss Quran or any religious book, keep in mind the time period it was revealed to the people.Quran was introduce to the people at a time when christianity was still debating whether or not women are "human beings" at all. hinduism had practices such as sati and again didnt have any status for women in the society. i dont have knowledge about judaism and their status for women in their religion. so considering all that Quran actually acknowleged women and gave them them the part in inheritence etc.
i am not a good muslim and i dont like to follow certain things in islam but if u study all the other religions, call it brain washing or upbringing whatever but it seems so far the logical one to me.

All you women need to be beaten up to be subservient to their master "the man"as Quraan has said. Don't refute the the holy book.
Taliban was right to keep women under the veil and under strict control. I agreed with taliban all the way uptil they started executing women in stadium built by UN.

Ghulail, I just compare the situation to myself. How would I feel if I’ve been causing chaos and problems and then when we go to bed, I start playing around and then I’m pushed away?
That would hurt. A lot. And the first thing I would think is not “do i smell bad or look bad” (because I know I have no problem in that department 
), but I would ask myself what did I do wrong or say wrong that he’s turned off? And I would feel so terrible, its not even funny. Its one thing when some random person is pissed off at you - its another when someone that means a lot to you is pissed off at you - to the point that they don’t want to have sex with you (and coming from a man, that must mean I did something REALLY bad).
Common sense philosophy.
