Re: Why is lasagne a really "WOW!" dish in Pakistan... And what other's are there?
well lasagne is considered a delicacy because of obvious reasons, its not part of the local cuisine, ingredients come very expensive and not everyone can make it well, kinda akin to a gora dude making a hell of a biryani, that would be considered totally exotic. baking, chinese/thai food, pizzas all fall under the same category. its a true gauge of ones culinary skills i guess if you can make stuff beyond the usual salans, pulaos and biryanis.
Re: Why is lasagne a really "WOW!" dish in Pakistan... And what other's are there?
I am sorry but I am surprised that lasagna is considered a wow dish in Pakistan. I think its pretty straight forward dish.
One dish that i would consider a real culinary art is Shahi Tukraaa. If a girl knows how to make it good, not too soggy, not too sweet, then I would real consider her a good cook.
Re: Why is lasagne a really "WOW!" dish in Pakistan... And what other's are there?
Lasagne is "in" (or in fashion) these days in Pakistan just like Pizza was some 10 years ago and Spaghetti was some 15/20 years ago. Thats pretty much it. You will not see people this excited in next 4/5 years ....
Re: Why is lasagne a really "WOW!" dish in Pakistan... And what other's are there?
Lasagna doesn't even require half the skills or time you need for biryani, nihari, haleem, etc. Anyone who can make those dishes should be known as the WOW cook.
My mil never lets me cook when we are in Pak.‘chution per aay ho enjoy karo thingie’ . but I had a chance to cook for her on her recent visit here…she was kind enough to say something nice for everything I made, desi, desi-chinese, desi-Italian :D, desserts etc..

I mean, what non-desi culinary skills can a single girl add to her bio-data to make her more marriagable?

I had my fair share of rishta-parade but never once anyone asked me if I could cook or what I could cook..these trends are dying slowly..not diminished completely but it's getting better.
Re: Why is lasagne a really “WOW!” dish in Pakistan… And what other’s are there?
any western dish is a wow dish in Pakistan these days…ppl are quite ‘maadren’ there. i was horrified to find out that someone from Pakistan makes white sauce from aloo and makes typical desi keema filling for her lasagna… i think we should call it aloo keema wala lasagna..
LOL yeah i like to think so, since they thought me being from the US wouldnt know how to do household chores etc. BUt i give them credit that they never once asked me what i know or dont know during the rishta process.
My MIL says the same thing and i took full advantage of on our first visit there but i feel bad for my SILs who never get a break so i try to help out when i can. Plus my younger BILS like it when i cook something for them.
I kind of get the impression that Lasagne is viewed as a wow dish in Pakistan, and many MIL's are most proud to have any DIL who can make it.
Why is this?
What other dishes have that Pakistani WOW factor?
I mean, what non-desi culinary skills can a single girl add to her bio-data to make her more marriagable?
(If I was a MIL, my one criteria would be "Does she know how to assemble a decent platter of cheese and crackers?")
But.......but............it has CHEESE in it, Halwa? Surely, that should be wow enough.
It might be because lasagna can be time consuming....it looks complicated with all the layers. And......some consider it to be a pricey dish because it has so many ingredients. Cheese can be expensive. And....of course it depends upon the complexity of the lasagna.
I see a trend, desirable dishes are those that are found commonly in restaurants. Italian, Chinese, don’t know about British / American. Perhaps we should add “Burger Making Skills” to the list.
Aloo sauce and keema? Perhaps she was trying to make shepherds pie.
