I understand "assimilate" to mean "transition yourself to fit into your environment" which is what I feel my parents/did when they settled here in the early seventies. "Emulate" to me, falls into the "poser" category that this thread refers to, and is pathetic on all kinds of levels, be gora/kaala wannabes or "Arabism"
But I could be wrong....
Spot on - its the poser category that I can't stand.
For people in Pakistan, it might be because of the media's portrayal of the two. The Americans don't SEEM to have any of the baggage we Pakistanis have and they appear pretty successful. Whereas the Arabs seem to have the same problems we have, lack of leadership, repressed people. I don't know if that is how things really are but that is how they seem to be from over here.

Okay. When did you watch Pakistani media last? They lambaste the US all the time. The Qurans that were burned in Afghanistan in Feb this year kicked up a media storm in Pakistan. Nobody speaks highly of the US in the media. Well save for the Express Tribune but that is co-owned by the New York Times.
And you are saying because of economic prosperity its okay to be snide and racist about emulating Arabs?
Agreed those are the worst. If you spent only 4 years studying in the US before you immigrated. There is no way you can have an american accent when you speak any language!
Not talking about fobs who moved to US after spending their life in Pakistan, but Pakistanis living in Pakistan who are attempting to be western with hilarious results.
Adapting to a place, because someone is born and raised there or fee up there is very different than someone who is just copying for whatever reason. A kid growing up in Boston emulating people around him and adapting to the culture is different than some 20 something in gujranwala all of a sudden becoming Arab in mannerisms or some dude in Karachi all of a sudden becoming jersey shore.

Couldn't agree more. However I made no comment about integration, assimilation or adapting. That is not the context of this discussion. The subject matter that was brought up was by those living in the west. My original post didn't mention that.
You are only a true Pakistani if you spent most of this year obsessing over and losing sleep over Ashar and Khirad’s fate and if your heart broke into tiny little pieces everytime you heard the Humsafar OST in Q Baloch’s voice.
So did you CM? Do you even know who Ashar and Khirad are? Do ya?!

Only answer to that is, Hollywood's done a pretty good job of brainwashing me.
