Why do Pakistani people speak English mixed with Urdu so much?

Re: Why do Pakistani people speak English mixed with Urdu so much?

Ah!

Even though I ONLY partially do agree with you when you said at least do it right....but that was really phunny.

See: I am not against English.

I am against Pakistanis living and breathing in Pakistan speaking and acting as English. very simple.

And a whole lot of Pakistanis don't even have English as their language except a little percentage of so called 'elite' and 'resourceful' people?

*Does this mean in Pakistan celebrities and politicians and powerful people just cater a certain class of people and ALL OTHERS are merely expected to follow them and be impressed by them?

Re: Why do Pakistani people speak English mixed with Urdu so much?

More importantly, the English speaking class has never made Pakistan a better place to live and all they do is copy others.

Why?

They can not relate to problems of common people and love to stay in their own world regardless what happens to the country where they themselves are living or raising their children.

A S Edhi on the other hand made a bigger difference in the lives of so many Pakistanis.

Re: Why do Pakistani people speak English mixed with Urdu so much?

:hehe: Good one.

Re: Why do Pakistani people speak English mixed with Urdu so much?

No, I don't switch to Urdu when speaking to a non-desi colleague of mine. But I do switch between the two when I am speaking to my sisters or people who CAN understand both.

Re: Why do Pakistani people speak English mixed with Urdu so much?

Pakistan’s national language is Urdu. English is its official language.

Re: Why do Pakistani people speak English mixed with Urdu so much?

so isn't it a remarkable thing that people in Pakistan( avg person to celebrity) have learned the foreign language so well?
also you will only find this trend in urban cities otherwise in rural areas where about 70% of the population lives, regional languages are spoken the most. so the people in rural Pakistan feels comfortable with the regional languages and people in Urban Pakistan with English language or rather with Minglish. and absolutely nothing wrong with any of it.

Re: Why do Pakistani people speak English mixed with Urdu so much?

At first I thought you were genuine when posted in post # 65.

Then you decided to post next post.

Prove me what is acceptable and right about people speaking English and learning to speak English language while they are still little kids and young PAKISTANI KIDS and be punished to speak or use the language DIFFERENT …of their previous masters and rulers…just because they were once ruled by English people.

Ruled by English speaking people is one key part here, in case you missed.

Re: Why do Pakistani people speak English mixed with Urdu so much?

What Pakistan has become is a **slave country **with salve minded education minister, prime minister and even army generals…and some people who reside in urban cities.

TV dramas, its many dialogues,.. and even the titles of TV programs and their credits… are in English. :smack:

Absolutely no self respect, no awareness of self identity, and no energy to take back the country from previous slavery.

Re: Why do Pakistani people speak English mixed with Urdu so much?

Sounds like you're projecting your own insecurities on to a multiethnic, multicultural nation of 80million+ that has different native languages depending on the region of the country. And exactly what part of English being an official language of Pakistan do you not understand?

Re: Why do Pakistani people speak English mixed with Urdu so much?

But the thread is about mixing Urdu and English...therefore something like fish and chips or bangers and mash would have been a more appropriate dish to choose. :)

Re: Why do Pakistani people speak English mixed with Urdu so much?

So speaking English - which is a universal language by the way - means people in Pakistan are slaves to white people?

The expectation is IF you speak English, it should be good English. Otherwise don't speak it, right?

How does one learn a language if they don't speak it?

Why do Pakistani people speak English mixed with Urdu so much?

This thread is such a contradiction to the other language thread. It basically seems that if people don't live their life in accordance to a certain warped definition you have of what it means to be a Pakistani, they are fake, hypocrites etc etc ... So pathetic.

Re: Why do Pakistani people speak English mixed with Urdu so much?

Hmm. If only people used it like you do. Somehow, back home, English is thought of as something you show off. Is that a bad thing? I don't know. People flaunt all kinds of stuff and I don't see any threads against fancy cars or gigantic houses.

You can learn a language by reading and writing it, just like we do back home. But you'll have to speak it at some point if you wanna learn how to carry conversations in that language.

Re: Why do Pakistani people speak English mixed with Urdu so much?

But if the national language of Pakistan is English, companies are also using English, its also a part of the curriculum in Pakistan...how can one avoid learning conversational English?

If you want to have a career, stability, etc...you will have to learn some English. Doesn't matter how good or bad it is...don't you need it?

Re: Why do Pakistani people speak English mixed with Urdu so much?

Companies use English for documentation, reports, memos and other things written. You might give a presentation in English every once in a while, however they're usually scripted. You hardly ever get to practice conversational English. Moreover, I think most people don't have anyone to practice with. I think when it comes to learning conversational English (especially small talk) there's no substitute to talking to a native speakers or hearing native speakers talk to each other.

Of course you'd need to learn some English to get a halfway decent job. Heck almost all of the job interviews I had back home were in English.

Re: Why do Pakistani people speak English mixed with Urdu so much?

Bhai or Behan: Sorry I still have confusion about your gender and this is not out of any disrespect.

Official language and National Language are two very distinct and different entities. Hope you may find the difference if search a bit more.

Reha my friend, English is NOT national language of Pakistan.

English is not even universal language. Ask Chinese, Germans, French, Arabs, Spanish, Italians etc.

This Khannas is very peculiar for either Pakistanis or many Indians.

Re: Why do Pakistani people speak English mixed with Urdu so much?

Oh jeez. Another gem.

Re: Why do Pakistani people speak English mixed with Urdu so much?

Ji Shukriyah.

Re: Why do Pakistani people speak English mixed with Urdu so much?

I think it has something to do with identity crises and slave mentality. Its just like Pakistanis doing bagha bagha in mosques to mimmick arabs and grow large beards and wear burqas to look like them.

Re: Why do Pakistani people speak English mixed with Urdu so much?

bagha bagha… what is that?

:hmmm:

Not only Pakistanis but a lot of non-Pakistanis grow large beard or women wear burqas based on their undertanding of religion.

Not because they just want to be monkeys copying another culture for no reason.

Before anyone get all excited by my word monkey: Let me explain.

If there is no reason whatsoever to speak or use English in day to day life then in my book you are a monkey looking for a banana if acting like someone other than you and yourself.
