Re: Why do non-religious people think that religious people live in fool’s paradise?
Not only do most not follow 90%, but 90% of the attention or maybe more is on sex, drugs and rock and roll.
I mean the focus is on how ppl look, what they wear, segregated vs non segregated events, beard and pajama, burqa and niqab…who is muslim or how muslim…shias and sunnis proving each other wrong, same for barelvi, deobandi, ahl e hadith, wahabi, ..and then of course if you got for khutbas it is politics and then all what wa spotted above, and then just if time is left about observing salat and ramadan..
that is what ppl have reduced islam to
I am a better muslim when i stay away from many muslims and muslim institutions…most mosque, most events, and definitely media..
Re: Why do non-religious people think that religious people live in fool’s paradise?
Hmm, that’s interesting. So did he mean that someone’s being irreligious gives the religious folk justification to transgress or to behave inhumanely? As in anything we perceive as dangerous is regarded with suspicion, kept a distance, removed, or even destroyed. ..?
Re: Why do non-religious people think that religious people live in fool’s paradise?
Don’t want to speak for Jolie. My interpretation, which I think Jolie has spelled out:
The Prof. Considered those who wear their religion on their sleeve, are outwardly overly pious, judge those who differ from their version of religion harshly, mix religion with government, promote laws based on religion, nitpick wrt differences rather than promote harmony as “irreligious”.
Re: Why do non-religious people think that religious people live in fool’s paradise?
Aren’t we both saying the same thing then? Jolie said the professor meant it as a dig toward the religious folk. So I interpreted his dig to be that the religious people can commit atrocities for which they will use the irreligious people as justification for the committing of atrocities/injustices.
Re: Why do non-religious people think that religious people live in fool’s paradise?
With a minor proposed change. The Prof. Was not taking a dig at the truly religious people who go about their life in a peaceful manner. He was using the term IRRELIGIOUS to describe the outwardly religious. (I think you are also saying the same thing. Just wanted to clarify, so that EVERYONE, and not just Monk, understands)
The rest of what you say I agree with
" Professor meant it as a dig toward the religious folk. So I interpreted his dig to be that the religious people can commit atrocities for which they will use the ATHEISTS as justification for the committing of atrocities/injustices"
Note I replaced “irreligious people” with ATHEISTS in ur text so my head stops spinning.
Re: Why do non-religious people think that religious people live in fool’s paradise?
To OP,
You know I used to think that! I have had some profound spiritual experiences since then to realize that the spiritual realm does exist. Where and how? It is indescribable. I don’t care what anyone says anymore.
Re: Why do non-religious people think that religious people live in fool’s paradise?
The reason behind for that particular point is being extremist. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and understanding.
My cousin and her husband were listening to an Islamic lecture couple of days ago suggesting believers to not spend their lives in listening to music and dancing. My cousin’s husband stopped her 6-year old daughter from dancing on a cartoon song at home but my cousin disapproved the idea.
My cousin had a different upbringing than her husband. She makes a claim that her daughter needs to enjoy her life as long as she is doing it at home and not front of non-mahram men then what’s the big deal? How can we stop her from having fun since she is a young child?
I shared the story so we can analyze how people perceive these lectures differently. If it was me, I’d interpret the scholar as if he was telling me to do great things in life not to just listen to music or dance all the time. It is targeting those people who are not doing anything productive.. Life needs to be balanced. Women are allowed to sing and celebrate at a wedding to cherish their happiness. I just don’t understand why do we take everything to an extreme level?
Re: Why do non-religious people think that religious people live in fool’s paradise?
It is sort of similar when atheists/agnostic crowd become adamant about disproving an invisible product that they shouldn’t care so much about to begin with (hand raised GUILTY!). Why get involved when neither party can prove or disprove this invisible product?
It is a personal journey. The faith in anything comes with individual experiences. You can’t have someone else’s experience.
Re: Why do non-religious people think that religious people live in fool’s paradise?
Do non-religious people got an evidence that there is no life hereafter? But they do insist on this without having empirical evidence (in their own terminology). This again made people believe that they also follow the popular phrase ‘tera kutta kutta hai, mera kutta tommy’
