I do not know about UK, but in the US a large number of the Bangladeshi come through the DV (lotery visa program) and cooking in a restaurant is the first step towards financial independence. And it true for other immigrants too...when the Italians first came, they opened Italian eating places. Many new immigrants do it, the second generation usually moves to other fields.

Btw, can anyone tell me where I can find bengalis in america? Maybe what i meant was a large presence? I haven’t really seen a lot of bengalis when you compare that there population is nearly the same as Pakistan

^^ Same was for Pakistan pre-9/11 [now people know karachi, peshawar, waziristan etc forget Pakistan].
But this was not my question. I was just asking about the expat deshi population in america. The Pakistani population was statistically known to be rather large in big cities by the govt but not so much by the regular joe.
P.S. I heard Toronto is very much like UK?

So you are telling me people here knew Pakistan before 9/11?
I can say for US that they didn’t. Maybe they knew in Canada but then I doubt they did over there either
