Yes we were, if you read post # 49 i was talking about his poetry and contradiction within. Now if you bring forward the argument that his approach was changed later on. I am saying that there was a clear contradiciton in his approach during that period (later part of his life). We can not attache time line to every poem or verse. To do that one has to do PhD in Iqbaliaat.
Specific to Iqbal, you can not look at his poetry in isolation. Like i said earlier, he had many more dimenssions to his personality. so it would be most appropriate to look at them collectively as Iqbal himself said :
*"I have never considered myself a poet. Therefore, I am not a rival of anyone, and I do not consider anybody my rival. I have no interest in poetic artistry. But, yes, I have a special goal in mind for whose expression I use the medium of poetry considering the condition and the customs of this country."
*(translated from the original in Urdu; Maktoobat, Volume I, page195)
Once we read the admission, i think we are entitled to look closely at the mission he had in mind.
Ps. You are most welcome participate in debate and discussion. I realize my earlier statement was un-called for, hence i apologize
mai nai palko sai dar-i-yaar pai sdastak dee hai
mai wo sail hu kai jsai khuda yaad nahee
aou kai dai aalama-i-madhoshi mai ik sajda
log kahtai hai kai saghir ko khuda yaad nahi
the thread is from 1998, and predates the poetry section by a few years. actually this post is from the early days of teh arts and culture forum. whichy later was divided itno what we see as all the life forums, poetry, etc etc.
arjay uncle, i think since your shot was on my use of word "LOL" your sher does not justify the situation... I am not Guftaar kaa Ghazi in that case:p abb iss sher ko ulaT daiN :)
Kirdaar kaa Ghazi is much better for me... Thanks for the compliments...:p
Iqbal bhee Iqbal saY aagah naheeN hai kuch iss maiN tamaskhur naheeN, wallah naheeN hai
Its the quality of poetry that makes him the best of all, his mastery over the words is unmatched by any other.
If you claim otherwise then put up poetry of Ibn-e-Insha that matches Iqbal’s tashbeehat. And as for topics Iqbal’s poetry is very diversed, love, religion, society, individual excellence, he touches upon everything.

Using difficult word and phrases does not make poetry or prose beautiful. Just like in dance if artist start doing areobics or difficult manuevor then it might impress the gullible audience but people who are aware of different genre of dances would not appreciate it much.

Since you have spitted categorically on notewordy poets of urdu language, quoting them more here, for you, would be like presenting common respectable pakistani citizen infront of Pakistani police. They simply wont show any respect.
The grand old dad of poetry was without doubt Ghalibjee.
If you have read Ghalib into depths...you sense how other poets have "copied" his qalaam but in a mannered way.
The queen of hearts....is without doubt Parveen Shakir.
Faizjee is divine in turning the human psyche into positiveness. When all hope is lost, he manages to light the end of the tunnel. Its a very rare signature....unique!
Allama Iqbal is divine in religious dialogues between Allahjee and man kind. No one can express this special bond better than him....period. He is loved by all Muslims of the world, uniting them....speaking directly to their conscience.....
Saghir Siddiqui is of the grand old school...of Chacha Ghalib. Urdu poetry....with such a stunning humbleness. He would dress as a"faqiir" and sit among his audience with a such a powerfull voice....you would become teary.... This man was in love with his qalaam.....nothing else mattered.
I like his work, Code_red.... He is of class without doubt.
Perhaps it is a matter of temperament too. I grew up with family/people who knew and interacted with poets as Saghir Siddiqui and Faizjee. They are living in my mind......their habits their taste and etc. Its another kind of connection.
Our taste is influenced by our "history". You have something with Ibn_e Insha.
*ham ghoom chukay basti ban me
ik aas ki phaans liye man me
koyee sajan ho, koyee pyara ho
koyee deepak ho, koyee tara ho
jab jeevan raat andheri ho
ik baar kaho tum meri ho
jab sawan badal cchaye hon
jab phaagan phool khilaye hon
jab chanda roop lutaata ho
jab suraj dhoop nahata ho
ya shaam ne basti gheri ho
ik baar kaho tum meri ho
haan dil ka daman phayla hai
kyoon gori ka dil mayla hai
ham kab tak peet kay dhokay me
tum kab tak door jharokay me
kab deed say dil ko sairi ho
ik baar kaho tum meri ho
kya jhagrra sood khasaray ka
ye kam naheen banjaray ka
sab sona ruppa le jaye
ye dunya, dunya le jaye
tum aik mujhay bahteri ho
ik baar kaho tum meri ho*

I miss reading Faizjee. Its one of my fav. lines....Thanks 4 sharing.
I really enjoyed this thread I have ben quietly browsing for past few days :)
At this juncture--I must also declare myself as one of those very fortunate ones *(TARIQ..yaar meri GRAMMAR theek hai na?? LOLLZ:)) who have actually met, talked and discussed poetry and their great works.. with icons like Faiz Ahmed Faiz, Ibne Insha, Ahmed Nadeem Qasmi, Raees Amrohi, Josh Malihabadi, Qurat'ul'ain Haider and Qateel Shiffai. Its such a great feeling--and a very nostalgic one!!!***
Keep this thread alive.....its simply mesmerizing to read th selections par excellence.
