So.. now that I am back.. kinda

who do u think would be the urdu poet of the century. Please support your argument as well.

I will save my own reponse for later, but here’s something to get u started

ghalic? mir? dard? iqbal? dagh? faraz? jaffery? faiz?

oki gang. go crazy. i hafta return and do some more test runs for moi boss.

Hi there!
Urdu poetry has a lot to offer but in my opinion Faiz Ahmad Faiz is the real poet of the century b/c Iqbal wasnot born in this century.
Us khet key har Ghunchay ko aag laga do is the real message of faiz .He was a socialist/communist and he was against the capitalism he talked about the oppressed but could not get the patronage as other poets b/c of his ferocious thoughts.

but iqbal did live in thsi century :)it would be unfair to someone born in 1999 who will cure AIDS and Cancer etc and solve world problems to not get person of the century award just cuz he was not born in the century.

I would say IQBAL, though Faiz is really good poet but IQBAL is IQBAL. U can't put him in 19th century though he was born in 1877 but his poetry appeared in 20th century.

Although a lot of new poets have come up with new ways of poetry, and with different thoughts I would say that it is still Iqbal who deserves to be the poet of this century. Nobody have still yet not been able to make such huge changes in society as him...and nobody have succeeded being as original as him ...so it is very true that IQBAL IS IQBAL.

When I had suggested that I will post my choice later, I did not know it will be this late.. but hey.
I procrastinated a "bit"

its Ahmad Faraz.

Salaam

Gharrhe murde ukharr rahi hoon so sorry, lekin

Fraudia jee Ahmed Faraz kion???
I mean mujhe un pe aitraaz to nahin lekin what makes him poet of the century???

Aap ki post mein kio supporting argument hi nahin hai

Faraz because he is more in touch with issues than any other poet. he expresses himself better... his poetry has angst and not hopelessness or depression...
he is a gadfly, he questions everything...
I was especially moved by one of his poems about open gunfire at Karachi University.

Faraz was exiled, but always held patriotic iews. His poems always have a sense of loss, and bewilderment, but its not just idle screaming. It makes you think....

hhhhmmmmmmm Iqbal? Ghalib? Faiz? Faraz???
No i cann,t do that. Its very difficult to choose one of them

I LOVE all of them

How acknowledged are Indian Urdu poets in Pakistan? Firaq Gorakhpuri, Ali Sardar Jafri or smaller guys like Kaifi Azmi and Sahir Ludhiyanwi.

I have zero knowledge of Urdu literature. So can someone enlighten me on waht is the stature of Indian Urdu poets in Urdu.

Fraudia jee

Pehle to yeh bataein ke aap ki is list mein Insha jee, aur kisi female poet ka naam kion nahin hai. I'm not sure but Momin Khan Momin bhi isi century ke nahin the??

Doosre koi example deinge pleease Faraaz sahib ka

Iqbal aur Ghalib jee ke ba'd Faiz is great, dekhiye:

Urdu Parrhnay mein mushkil naheen hoti magar english alphabet mein urdu likhnay aur parrhnay mein thorri si mushkil hoti hai.

I did not give a list out for people to choose from, I had just asked them to suggest who their favourite poet is and gave a few examples. As far as women in poetry go, I like Parvin Shakir. As far as Iqbal and Ghalib go, as much as I like them there are two issues.

1) Ghalib is not from this century, the question was, the poet of the century, and by that I meant the current century, someone who has written in the last 99 years. Otherwise we can add the names of Mir, Dard, Hali etc to the list.

2) Iqbal is probably among my top few favourite poets, but I chose Faraz because he is more in touch with issues of our times. I like newer poets, I dont know if you ever heard of Mehmood Ghaznawi (the poet not the leader/warrior) he is the same. When I read their poetry it charges me up.

so like...did we decide who the best poet is and why?

This question is one which can generate a lot of debate!!

If we include all poets from 1899 to 2001 then without doubt most Urdu shanaas and professional maahiraan e Urdu aur ahle zabaan would say Iqbal. Ghalib died in 1860 odd. Mir even before Ghalib!! And in Urdu the top three are considered by nearly every critic as Ghalib, Mir, Iqbal. Now only Iqbal falls within the time period you mentioned of these top three therefore he is the best

As for Faiz he is very good but I don’t think he is at the level of the top three above. Haan he is certainly the most important PAKISTANI poet (the other three are all Indians). Ahmad Faraz sahib bhi acche hain–mujhe bahut pasand hain par mere khyaal mein aalami sattah par dekha jaaye tau sirf Mir, Ghalib aur guzashtah saddi mein Iqbal hii iss darjah pe poora uttar te hain. Aur jitna kaam bain al-iqwaamii naqaadoN ne Iqbal pe kiya hai itna aur kissi doosre urdu shaa’ir par nahin huwa. Ghalib poar bhi nahin…

Mere khyaal mein Ghalib, Mir aur Iqbal kay baad kayee naam hain jo shumaar-e-chahaaram pe muntakhib kiye jaa sajkte hain…Faiz, Faraz, Sahir, Firaq, (agar hum sirf 20ween saddi kay shu’ara kay naam istimaal karein tau)…

ZZ as for your question without doubt there is no prejudice towards the Urdu poets from India either. They are given their due and their divaans are v. popular–Firaq Gorakhpuri, Sahir Ludhiyaanvi, Sardar Jaafri, Hasrat Mohani, Hasrat Jaipuri, Jigar Muradabadi, etc. etc. and at a lower standard Kaifi Azmi, Javed Akhtar etc.

** Ibn-e-Insha**

I know that Ghalib, Mir, Iqbal and Faiz had their own style but they all have covered only certain topics like love, ishq-e-haqeeqi, Islam, or society waghera waghera.

If you read Ibn-e-Insha then you would realise that he has covered topics such as:

[li]Famine in Africa (yeh bacha kis ka bacha hai)[/li][li]Muslims condition in general (deewar-e-girya)[/li][li]Daily Life (jalay to jaloo gori)[/li][*]Love (kal chaudhweeN ki raat thi, shab bhar raha charcha tera)

I think for Females as Sabah mentioned it has to be Parveen Shakir. As for Shayer I have to say Allamah Iqbal. And this is not just because of patriotic reasons but listening to his shayeri gives such saroor to the mind. Its just unexplainable!

I completely agree with khan_sahib. Ibn-e-Insha is probably the most prolific poet and literary Icon of our country. And sadly his poetry is not much appreciated as compared with his prose. I would also nominate him for urdu poet of the last century :k:

I heard Iqbal’s farsi poetry is probably better than urdu.

Re: who would be the urdu poet of the century?

Its amazing Code_Red, you revived this thread after 9 years (started in Sep 1998). Amazing.

I think that Faiz should be the pick. His choice of topics might be usual but his approach, Tashbeehaat and Istaa'aaray are out of this world.

When I read dasht-e-Tanhaa'ee for the first time with proper understanding, I was amazed. I dont think that anyone used the analogies that Faiz used

Re: who would be the urdu poet of the century?

Faiz, Jalib and Faraz are cretins when compared to Iqbal.
