I usually just pick up the cheque, and then promptly pass it on to someone else, I mean if you are going to take my time, the least you can do is pay for my meal. I am already being kind and not charging for my precious time.
Re: Who pays?
We usually rotate, no one really keeps a tab though. I don't like the idea of 'going dutch'.. or people pitching-in to pay for a meal/coffee etc (especially when people do it at the table and begin splitting there and calculating!)

I hate the calculating at the restaurant myself (especially the tip - since I tip well and some others don't like to tip generously), but I find if you insist on paying for everyone all of the time, it offends people and yet the other people would prefer to go dutch. So, it all depends on the company you're with.
Re: Who pays?
really? I never thought it was weird to calculate at the table…thats just me? ![]()
Re: Who pays?
Question - when you split the bill, do you calculate each person’s bill separately and then add the tip or do you take the total bill and just divide it amongst everyone?
We used to do the second option but some people hate paying for other people’s more expensive meal. So actually sitting there and saying your meal cost $22.87 and his was $27.45 and mine was $31.87, and don’t forget to add your share of the tip is a bit annoying.
Some restaurants will actually present separate bills to everyone if you ask - that’s fine too (but most restaurants hate that).
Re: Who pays?
Reading the other thread..my question is a bit different
when meeting with friends for coffee/lunch/dinner etc (can be the other gender, but its strictly a platonic relationship), who pays?
Go Dutch.....Unless you have Much....to Pay as such

We do the second option. Everybody usually orders one or two things and then we all share. If it's someone's birthday, we just exclude the birthday person, so if it's 8 people altogether, it'll be split into 7. I have never come across a situatoin in which the 1st option was used. I guess it depends on the group dynamic, if i dine with the same people enough, I'll know what I should and shouldn't order and if I feel like ordering something more expensive...I'll ask the waiter/waitress to put it on a separate bill.

Clever.
Re: Who pays?
Sara, do you remember the episode from Friends where Joey, Phoebe and Rachel hated paying for everyone else's more expensive meals - that's why some people prefer to go dutch. Some people will order lobster and a huge steak while someone else will order a salad. The salad person ends up paying for the steak person - so you eat $10 worth of food, but pay $25 dollars - that's annoying.
Re: Who pays?
Ohhh okay…I get what you’re saying now.
Im trying to remember if that happened or if I did that (order something more expensive).. :sid:
Re: Who pays?
When we go out with family or friends we always pay for everyone. My hubby for some reason loves to do that! It gets really expensive too but he insists. I gues I don't mind paying for everyone sincE it's not something we do everyday.
Re: Who pays?
I didn't know it was such a big deal to get separate bills. We always just tell the server ahead of time..actually they always ask. Never had to sit and calculate everyone's share.
Ofcourse, its a whole diff story when it comes to going out with family.

Its all about the culture.....
Living among the wolfs and not knowing how to howl makes it incongruent, indeed if you are living in a society where the concept of "go dutch" is a foreign enough to accept , people may opt to rotate which in essence is "going dutch".
So the crux of the matter is that you may call it what ever you feel pleased about, sharing the burden is a "way to go", however with that said if you can afford to pay for your friends you should and do it over and again.

Yes but going dutch is tacky as people are scrounging around for the bills and calculating tips. Rotating ensures that one person will take care of the bill and the rest of the party can carry on with the conversation.
Btw, this refers to personal outings -- for business, I always expense it :D

Who does that? This concept is foreign to me - isn't there separate bills?
Re: Who pays?
^Yeah, I didn't even know people did that.

Person with the fastest fingers pays. Person who opens the purse or wallet first should be given the honor to pay , in recognition of their skill and will to pay.
Re: Who pays?
that has never been a question when i hang out with my good friends, some one just goes for the payment and others compensate it when we are together next time.
With colleagues, the rule is a bit different. If he/she is a juniour, i will always pay unless he is being penalized for doing something wrong.
When hanging out with senior colleagues, I try to pay and it may end either way.
Re: Who pays?
I like paying for everyone.

Tons of people. I see people discussing and negotiating their bills all the time. If you get separate bills, this problem could be avoided.

GK, when I say we rotate it's not pre-planned. We don't decide before meeting at the given venue who will pay..nor does anyone make a big deal out of it. When we're done it's still all very casual.. "let me pay, you paid last time..". The person who has the bill may or may not even pass it on.. and pay again. Alhamdulilah no one makes a big deal about it.
I've overheard a couple 'going dutch' too where the guy asked the lady to pay the extra amount because she had 2 drinks and he had just one.
