Who pays?

Reading the other thread..my question is a bit different

when meeting with friends for coffee/lunch/dinner etc (can be the other gender, but its strictly a platonic relationship), who pays?

Re: Who pays?

Everyone for themselves...it gets hard to meet friends if you're having to pay for everyone OR someone else got the bill last time so you need to get it this time.

My friends and I have a strict rule...we each pay for ourselves.

Re: Who pays?

Everyone should pay for themselves and that’s how we do it in my circle. Most of us are not even working yet so we can’t afford to pay for everyone anyways. Although, when I’ve been out with a guy friend they insist on paying and I’ve never been successful at paying for myself thus far :bummer: Will try harder next time.

Re: Who pays?

Everyone pays for themselves.

But Pakistanis who have just come over to UK/US are so shocked by this, because to them when you're invited to a dinner ( even to a restaurant ) the host is expected to pay for everyone. I guess that's how it happens in Pakistan.

Re: Who pays?

When I go out with my siblings or cousins we take turns paying but we dont keep tabs on whose turn it is. I am so used to paying for my siblings, its automatic. I sometimes forget that friends dont like it when you pay for them, but I honestly just do it cos im used to it. I guess my thinking is that 'you are my friend, im going to meet up with you all the time, does it really matter who pays this time?'

I have a couple of friends who are a few years older than I am and they NEVER let me pay, I have to remind them that I am a working now and I can afford to pay but they just dont let me. My eldest sister never lets me pay, even if im buying something for myself like shopping wise she never lets me pay.

.

Re: Who pays?

We always split it unless it's a special occasion or if I'm meeting a friend after a long time.

^PS I need to be better friends with Milly :D

Re: Who pays?

I normally meet with people one on one, and the ones who are older/are working steadily end up paying...and no I don't just sit there, I do insist on paying as well

in college, with friends we would split it (unless it was someone's birthday...then they paid for the breakfast/lunch >>>> dunno why that was....must be a Pakistani thing)

Re: Who pays?

if you are meeting them regularly then each individual should pay own bill.

Re: Who pays?

When im out with friends I always offer to pay but usually end up splitting it. During college we would split it equally as we were poor students. Lol.

Re: Who pays?

This. A combination of me paying, going dutch or sometimes letting the others pay.

Re: Who pays?

Back when we were in school and/or just starting our career, everyone paid for ourselves. These days....it depends on the amount. Generally if the amount is $50 or less....one person just offers to pay. And the next time someone else ends up paying. We don't bother splitting up amount when its that little. We don't usually keep track.

But when the amount is high, then we'll split it.

If its someone birthday or some other type of celebration, then we usually split BUT leave out the person we're celebrating.

Re: Who pays?

I forgot about that, yeah the group of friends I have now...we do that (instead of the birthday person treating everybody...I have heard that that tradition is very common in Pakistan....)

Re: Who pays?

Yea I've heard that from my cousins....how the "birthday person" treats everyone else! Maybe I'm just too American but to me that seems odd. I can't imagine having the "birthday person" for themselves....let alone everyone else!

Re: Who pays?

I don't mind paying, unless its out with work colleagues then we pretty much rotate dinners. The point here is not worry about money when you are enjoying the company.

Personally, I feel its tacky to be splitting up bills and trying to figure out the tips. Its food or coffee and if your paying for it, no big deal. Of course people in the west make a big deal out of it, once they roll with me, they get the perspective.

^ lets hang out pal :smokin:

Re: Who pays?

^

No thanks :D

(I meant people I know)

Re: Who pays?

if they are treating me this one time then it fine with me, cuz next time i treat em.

ps. i already got 6 coffee treats from my co-workers. i also treat everyone twice (with macdonalds ice cream and ice coffee).

ps. these days macdonalds ice coffee is $1 all sizes.

Re: Who pays?

when i meet my friends for coffee, dinner, lunch we all pay for our own food or divide the cost. (this is how it was for my future spouse too) unless i say that its a treat from me (which i dont).

Re: Who pays?

When we friends meet, any one of us pay the bill, then the other day we met some other friend pay. this is what we do so that every one turn comes ...
