When to start planning or organising a wedding

Hey

I’m new to GS and would like to say hiiiii… also i’ve been reading a few threads lately and love how you guys help each other out with alot of problems and everyone seems to know a lot about clothes/designs/make up etc..

My questions is that when should you start planning a wedding? When’s too early or late?

Would appreciate a response

Re: When to start planning or organising a wedding

I would say a year to at least 8-9 months in advance...

Re: When to start planning or organising a wedding

Depending on where u are, a year in advance is good. U should book ur venue first and then your photographer IMHO.

Re: When to start planning or organising a wedding

umm for me a year in advance is good... :)

Re: When to start planning or organising a wedding

Ahhh thanks for the prompt replies :) that's what i was thinking but my mum's like no no we should start thinking about it now! i swear she's more excited than i am! i'm not getting married till 2012!!

Re: When to start planning or organising a wedding

i've been planning my wedding scince i was 16 lol!

Re: When to start planning or organising a wedding

u girls who get to plan are incredibly lucky. most families I know won't even set a date until like 2 months later, and that too with hardly any planning!

lol...dats sweet...arnt moms da best... m not even getting engaged till 2012 .. and my moms planning for that already :o she says "planning is everything" & she wants everything 2 b perfect.. hehe

same here... at 15 i was a tomboy.. i was like " who wants 2 get married" ..at 16 i started daydreaming abt all da wedding stuff... lol
i even figured out wat colors i want my outfits n such ( but they do keep changing every yr :p )

Re: When to start planning or organising a wedding

lol the families haven't set a date yet! :( but it doesn't harm anyone to plan! ( It's what the dearie says!)

I've been planning my wedding since i was in secondary school! Actually that reminds me of looking in my leavers diary for the wedding pictures thaat i had in there :$!

I'm not having an engagement..It's going to be wedding only! I go through phases at the moment where i'll be so wedding obsessed and then won't even think about the wedding! My mum seems more excited then me! She's always coming up with new things and wedding this wedding that! :/ lol! I have a feeling it's going to be CRAZY MAD when the moment actually comes! I'm really wishing that the next year goes really quickly so that i can actually start preparing quickly!

Another question: i'm getting my bridal outfits made in Pakistan next year (2011)..start of next year..but won't be getting married till middle of the year after(2012)...will this cause any problems? As in fashion wise...etc

Thanks girls <3

my moms more obsessed with MY wedding than ME.. lol…
i believe what style suits you and what style u can pull off is THE fashion for you.
i wudnt order my wedding outfit so early tho …i wud xpect its delivery maybe 2 weeks b4 my wedding…( i gain & lose weight easily.. lol..what if it doesnt fit on THE day? :bummer: )

Re: When to start planning or organising a wedding

You should order your outfits 5-9 months before your wedding. The styles are changing but for the last 2 years, the longer kameez style (knee length or lower) has been consistant. Plus, you'll be able to relax and plan other things smoothly that way. sigh I wish I was getting married in a year or two years time frame. =( I, too, have been planning my wedding since I was 16. >.<

Re: When to start planning or organising a wedding

^Lol, I feel the urge to start looking into dresses. But then I feel guilty of it. More I think about wedding and stuff, more I want it to happen as soon as possible... and end up pushing SO. That doesn't go well for either one of us.

Damn practicality! Why can't I just have a fun wedding without having to ensure some sort of financial stability! :(

Re: When to start planning or organising a wedding

Yup, the financial bit is a pain in-the-ykw.
But good planning can def. save you money. You'll end up spending more if you're in a hurry. Booking a venue and a photographer should be helpful.

Here's a post a wedding planner once posted here:

Allocate responsibilities between both the families
Draw up guest list
Visit possible venue(s) to discuss availability

Choose a decorator and a floral theme for your wedding
Audition musicians / make music arrangements for the Sangeet
Start purchasing of your trousseau, wedding, and reception outfits
Speak to travel agents about honeymoon destinations
Plan your wedding budget, collect estimates for all professional services
Set dates for pre-wedding celebrations

Two to Three months to go...

Have all your bookings confirmed in writing
Invite Moulvi for the ceremony
Maintain good contacts with all your wedding professionals
Caterers, florists, musicians, etc.
Send out invitations for outstations
Choose wedding rings
Shop for tikka gifts
Keep a record of acceptances and refusals of invitation
Finalize your honeymoon plans, make sure passports and vacations are up-to-date and you have applied for all necessary visas
Book accommodations for out-of-town guests
Plan your menu and any special requirements with the caterers

One month to go...

Be sure your wedding clothes are collected and ready-to-wear
Make appointments with hair-dresser and beautician
Organize Mehendi artist
Order mithai and related items
Finalize plans for the Sangeet
Book your hotel for your wedding night, if required.
Make sure that you and the groom have luggage for the honey moon, think what you want to pack
If required, book a horse and some musicians for the Barat's arrival
Book wedding cars

2 Weeks to go...

Arrange for all your dresses to be ironed and packed
Order relevant traveller's cheques or foreign currency, if needed*

1 Week to go...

Confirm all bookings
Confirm final guest list
Confirm menu with caterers
Arrange for drinks to be delivered
Confirm arrangements for hired crockery, cutlery, glassware or table linen
Your wedding clothes should be ready, try on outfits

The day before the wedding...

Your florist should prepare and soak all flowers and have a detailed plan of action
Make sure wedding car is clean
Pack your honeymoon suitcase, ready for delivery to the reception. Make sure your fiancé has packed his
Visit the hair dressers and beauticians
Try to relax and have an early night

Re: When to start planning or organising a wedding

WOW!!! Thanks M_was_here! That’s amazing! I’ve copied and pasted that and saved it somewhere safe!

I’m going for the long kameez lengha but just have to decide what day to do it on..i’m gonna try and convince my mum to go in early 2012 because that would seem better. The only things we’ve done is decided on what guests to invite on our side..decided what colour i should wear and talked about other stuff! There’s still much more to go! My mum seems worried sometimes because i’m her first child getting married!

Are any other girls getting married soon? like in the next few years or so!

Tell me about it arsh! It would seem like it’s my mum gettin married not me :P..when are you getting hitched

Curious lady - tell me about it! I want so many things but have to hold back because it’s not fair on my mum to splurge alot of money on my wedding..and sometimes i’m content with a simple wedding..to be fair i just wanna get married! But i know if i don’t do the whole wedding thing i’ll regret it and mostly my mum would go mental! LOL..Money issues are stressful!

Re: When to start planning or organising a wedding

Yup, that list is very helpful. I've saved it as well. I have a diary entry on my iPod Touch notepad dedicated to all things weddings related, lol >.<

Re: When to start planning or organising a wedding

LOL are you serious!!??! SO DO I! on my touch aswell!! It's an app called evernote! It's actually amazing...you can access it on like a laptop and your ipod touch aswell because it syncs the notes online! I thought i was the only wedding obsessed girl to go this far to have a app totally dedicated to weddings!

Re: When to start planning or organising a wedding

LOL! okay, I love you. We need to exchange wedding ideas sometimes, I'll email you the fun ideas I've thought of. And yes, weddings is ALL I think about. They totally cheer me up. I had a slight wedding obsession but it was mainly fashion-related. Ever since my amazing fiancé, it esclated to the idea of weddings as a whole. sigh though I'm not getting married for probably another 3-4 years. =(

Definitely! I've mostly been obsessed with outfits and erm cakes :$ hehe .. Pm me your address and I'll reply back with mine :) It's a bit fiddly on the touch ;) I can finally talk to someone else apart from my mum about weddings.. I do try with my friends but I feel like I go on and on! How come your getting married in 3-4 years if I may ask?
