omg!! i remember the shami kabob/toast sandwich..mom made it once! and i refused to open the lunchbox....even the lunchbox...from outside...smelled of the kebob yikes! i asked her never to make me anything with masala ever...
unfortunately bland lunches are usually the safest and the most unoffensive.
^not a mommy but a wife... :) and yes i usually put together the ingredients the day before..
like baked/sauteed chicken, tomato sauce, pasta salad, boiled black beans...cut veggies....etc..
you just have to put the stuff together in the morning..(he leaves by 5:30)
i dont use onion, garlic and other potentially stinky stuff in my husband's lunch...he has to be around so many people all day...so i have to be careful about what he eats...
other than that..fried stuff is a no-no....it makes one slow...and he needs to be fresh/alert...
I usually do it night before like boil the egg and and mash it to make for sandwich and in the morning I just put it in bread. And for fresh fruit like straw berries I usually put in the ziploc in morning.
Here is a chicken cheese kebab recipe:
Boneless chicken
boil potatoes
Cheese ( I usually use mozeralla )
cabbage (a little)
salt
black pepper
chaat masala
First you boil the chicken with one garlic clove ,salt and pepper and let the water dry itself. No need to throw away the water. When the water is dried mash the chicken, mix cheese, boil potatoes, cabbage, salt, black pepper and chaat masala in it.And freeze it when u have to fry it use bread crumbs and eggs.First dip it in egg and then bread crumb. After that pan fry it until it turns golden crisp.
Pareezay nice tip about ziplocs, I'll keep that in mind.
Ume, not ziplocs, the plastic wraps roll which you get at the supermarket, etc. Pretty much everyone I know use those. I started using them after seeing sandwiches wrapped in them at au bon pain and other deli stores, and they are so convenient, non smelly and non messy. Maybe that's why Im so fond of kebab sandwiches because after the lunch box disaster, I switched to croissants and this way of wrapping them up.
the schools in our area are going green…and in the effort to reduce waste, they are encouraged to bring lunchboxes and tiffins…
tiffins are being sold at each individual school which is awesome!! the kids learn to be responsible at an early age…
you can pack multiple snacks at once…
*it also depends on how young your kids are…i have taught kindergarten and elementary…as well as middle school…they are terrible with wrapped lunches…my students had to eat lunch in class…
and yes…there were a couple of desi kids who would ignore the smelly lunches and eat them. I felt kinda sad…because no one would sit next to them!!
