Its a huge problem in US or any other non muslim countries that there is no halaal food so what you do usually? What kind of lunch you pack for your children?
Cold Sandwich
Hot dogs
nuggets
egg sandwiches
Any more ideas
Re: What to give for lunch
For my lunch to uni i make...either....pasta salds, filled pasta in sauce, humous and pitta bread or humous and veggies to dip.
Or a sandwich and some fruit and some yoghurt.
In the US im sure you get halal chicken! so u can make chicken sandwiches, tuna or egg.
You can make wraps with fajita wraps filled with chikcen or cheese.
COus cous with roasted vegetables!
soup in a flask
To be honest though in the city i live in, in the uk there is LOADS of halal food available so its never been an issue!
Re: What to give for lunch
Does the school not have a vegetarian/seafood option available for lunch? I remember we used to get stuff like PB&J sandwiches, grilled cheese, tunafish sandwiches, pizza, fried fish, pasta, etc in school as we could not eat the meat. Since you are packing the kids lunch, the options are endless depending on what your kids like. Mac n cheese....chicken patty sandwich, various pasta dishes, pilao with grilled meat....steamed veggies with a dip. You can get halal cold cuts and make them sandwiches with that and cheese. You can also give cut up fruit like apples/oranges/grapes/peaches etc. Maybe pudding/jello packs, piece of cake etc.
They give PB &J sandwich only for two days so rest of the day I have to make lunch for them.
Here is the problem my daughter doesn't like to eat cold pita or chicken nuggets ,sometimes kids are impossible.
Re: What to give for lunch
UZ, make noodles with chicken for her.
A yoghurt and a fruit and a juice box.
Make qeema sandwiches in sandwich maker, pasta with chicken...
Re: What to give for lunch
UZ she is not impossible.....she is just like my daughter.
very, very fussy eater.
I am already struggling with what I will be packing in her lunch box for school starting next month.
In her pre-school they used to provide two snacks and a hot lunch (halal) so I never had to worry.
the sandwich maker is a good idea. Perhaps I should get it out again and start experimenting with it now....
Re: What to give for lunch
oh no way to heat up food? Hmm. Forget kids I dont like cold chicken nuggets either. I wuld go with pasta salads with protein, tuna sandwich, egg salad...etc....
give her any soups or hot food in a thermos for kids....hmm
i am fearful for what i will do when my boy is kindergarten age. He is extremely fussy.

Pasta salads are good idea Afro I'll try that at home and then I'll pack her lunch.
Re: What to give for lunch
I have to do the same thing from next month. This is my plan:
every day, she will get a yogurt or a yogurt smoothie plus a fruit and some baby carrots, a juice box and some teddy grahams. In addition to that, she will get a meal.
Now that meal will either be:
chicken + veg noodles chinese style or
pizza slice or
pb & j sandwich or
mac & cheese or
pasta with qeema or chicken or hot dogs
that’s my 5 days. some days she can buy from school.
oh the dreams of a mother :hinna:
Re: What to give for lunch
How about tuna salad sandwiches, hummus and bread, or bagels with cream cheese? make sure they have some sort of healthy dessert and snacks too like fruit cups, saltine crackers, baby carrots, grapes, and things like cheese sticks and whatnot. in the colder weather send them with thermos' of soup, that's what we do with my little brother and if you talk to your kid's teachers, alot of them are very understanding of the whole halal issue and will put away the kids food in the teachers lounge in the fridge if it needs to stay cold and fresh or will arrange to have them microwave stuff in the cafeteria.
I dont know the system with most schools in other cities, but I know when I was younger our parents could come by lunchtime and drop off food for us or take us home or nearby to eat. It wasnt a daily thing, but it was a nice surprise when it happened. :)

If you can find a halal meat shop then your kids' lunch can include items containing meat (nuggets, chicken sandwich, hamburger; hot dogs).
But students bring a variety of things for lunch such as
Pasta (it doesn't have to include meat)......such as spaghetti....ziti...lasagna/
Pizza
Thermos of soup
Macaroni and cheese
Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches
salad
Stir-fry vegetables
Stuffed pastries
aloo tikki (potato pancake/patti)
falafel
stuffed grape leaves
rice
As **Skittlez **suggested.....hummus with bread or tuna fish sandwiches.
Hummus with bread and bagel with cream cheese are nice ideas. Because my daughter really likes bagel with cream cheese.
And stuff pastries are nice too.
I'll make a list of these great ideas and and make a meal plan for whole month. Thanks ladies keep your ideas coming.
Re: What to give for lunch
I am eating bite size pieces of lightly sauteed halal chicken franks right now.. that got to be the most nutritious and convenient finger food that kids can eat.

The rest OK perhaps.
Re: What to give for lunch
In UK most schools have started providing halal meat for muslim children.
When will the Yanks learn?

you can pass for a 20 year old.. but not a kid. ![]()
Re: What to give for lunch
ume, make shami kebabs and freeze them. you can make croissant sandwiches with those.. since white bread can get a bit boring. also, potato cutlets, egg and tuna salad, fruit salad, yogurt, granola bars.
Re: What to give for lunch
omg ammi used to make us sandwiches with shami kabobs.
don’t do it please. at least don’t pre-make them. by lunch time the bread is soggy and the kabobs stink up the whole lunchbox, and you don’t want to eat any of it. i would always bring it home and then forget and it would rot for days.
:halo:
Re: What to give for lunch
^that is exactly why it’s best with croissants,..what you’re describing is one of the childhood traumas i went through.. eating kebabs with bread like roti because it would be just a mess by lunchtime ![]()
