I think we have become people who would talk the talk but won't walk the walk. I see people going in uproar against corruption and this n that all over the internet and social media but in real life they're only worried about making money and sending their kids to top schools and wearing the top designer dresses.
I had a friend in college who would always talk about changing the system blah blah...she wrote me a letter to find her brother a rishta of a British Pakistani girl who should also be a doctor. When I told her to find a good poor or orphan girl for your brother in Pakistan she became furious.

On a serious note, both pride and greed have been condemned in Quran. It was pride that made Azazeel Iblees. About greed, Quran says:
"And whoso is saved from his own greed, such are the successful".

We have become insensitive because we have learned the at of shifting blames. We don't take personal responsibility of anything that is happening around us. It's always some berooni, yahoodi, nasraani taaqat ... It's never our fault. Hum tou masoom hain.

In addition to what @TLK said, I would add Tolerance. We don't seem to tolerate anyone that is different from us and because of which we are unable to empathize with them. I know this is not the religious forum, it only takes a cursory look at the Rasoolullah's Seerah to know how tolerant and compassionate he was.

Besides this there is a strange indifference towards victims. Its not just about people related to different sects (like Hazara people being killed in Quetta), but I’ve observed that a daily news that ‘10 people got killed in Karachi’ just feel like nothing happened in the city. There was a time, when even killing of single person lead to sadness in the area. May be as we are living in bigger cities where we hardly have any interaction with our neighbors, we lost the sense of attaching with the people around us in their happiness and in their sorrows.

We live in times in which if you question conventional wisdom, you are termed a wannabe, a fake secular, and not supporting your kind enough. We have become polarized in every which way. The true messengers of peace will be tougher on their own, question their own more rigorously.
Since the topic is of insensitivity, Dr. Subramanian Swamy blogged about this attack. Very hateful. And plenty of Hindus getting behind it.

I dont know if you are old enough to remember Masoom Sisters or Pappoo from Lahore. The whole country was gum sum after those murders (both happened in Zia time I think). Even Bushra Zaidi was a huge incident in Karachi

The awliya ikraam might* (and this is just a guess of mine) say that our lifestyles harden our hearts. Things like overeating, materialism, the kind of foul language and scenes we are exposed to in the media, lack or absence of ibadat (namaz/dhikr/Quran) harden hearts over time.
People who are ruled by their egos can lack empathy for others.

Don't remember these, but I remember that when a young guy from our hometown, who was teaching in Karachi, got killed in apparently a snatching attempt last year, whole of the town was sad. May be statements from authority for Karachi like 'itna baRa shehr hai, 8-10 log maare jate hain to konsi baRi baat hai. itne west ke falan shehr main bhi marte hain' make people insensitive and this continues till (God forbid) people you know/ relatives became victims.

That is our biggest problem. Related issue is the one that not just authorities, but people like the ones on this site do that. As soon as you bring up an issue of Pakistan, posts/links about similar issues in USA/UK start popping up, like oh so what if Gujranwala crowd burnt a couple because similar incident also happened in Germany.

I do agree what awliya kiraam said and what they practiced. But today you can’t get peace of mind at their dargahs. It all become nasty business of show-off at the dargahs. I remember once we visited Qalandar Shahbaz’s dargah and the faqir at entrance carrying a jhaRoo came for money and letting people enter the dargah. The jhaRoo was supposedly a tool to jhaaR your sins before you enter the dargah

Yeah, some among the current lot, are not practicing correctly.
But, I think it makes sense. Hearts harden over time due to various influences and lack of ibadat. Along with that I think maybe upbringing and challenging circumstances may also mess up minds. Look at the upbringing/background of some serial killers and dictators.
