Light-skin has also been a sign of status. People with fair skin are those that haven't had to labor in the sun all day. Its association with status is one of the reasons it's become a desireable quality when searching for a bride (and groom).
I think there's nothing wrong with preferring one look over another. You can't really blame someone for a personal preference they have no control over.
HOWEVER, what I find in the older generation is that it's not about personal preference. There's a belief in a universal standard of beauty. In order to be considered beautiful or even pretty, light skin has to be present. Darker girls may be considered "attractive" or "charming," but to the older generation, they are RARELY ever described as "beautiful" or "pretty." I think it's problematic to have this universal notion of beauty.
I had heard that Vital Signs first made the song, Gore Rang Ka Zamana. And then they received complaints from the darker-skinned damsels.....and as a result they later came out with "Sanwali Siloni." Don't know if that's true.
HOWEVER.....if Vital Signs DID receive some criticism for Gore Rang Ka Zamana, it could be due to the lyrics such as "gori dar tujhay kis ka hai, tera to rang gora hai," which sort of reflects the damaging societal attitudes about skin color. Saying that a girl has got nothing to be scared or worried about cuz she's fair-skinned...can help perpetuate the erroneous belief that the only thing a girl needs for a good life is a chitti chambri.
Music can be a mirror of society.
Vital Signs released their Gorey Rang ka zama song in their very first album Vital Signs 1 the song was the last song and was named Gori. I don't know if they received criticisms for it or not but in their second album which was Vital Signs 2, the song Sanwali is the very first song so they probably tried to send the message that they weren't picking sides with color so yeah they were trying to fix their mistakes with sanwali!
