These day the market is so high even an old place is costing nearly to 500k, you might as well get a newer one.
Re: What is a "good" salary?
When you are earning 100 K you can only afford 500 k house
If you manage your money properly and do the maths I think anyone can afford 500k house (what is a financial insitute for?)
Re: What is a "good" salary?
Housing is expensive.
Re: What is a "good" salary?

If the financial institute agrees to finance it.
If one can get mortgage for $500K house. with the recent meltdown in subprime mortgage it is going to be tougher for anyone making less that $100K to get a $500K mortgage, unless they are putting down a high downpayment.
Re: What is a "good" salary?

depends on your definition of nice, and where.
for $500K you can get a fantastic place in smaller cities like Little Rock or Wichita, and some cheaper cities like Dallas.
For $500K you can get a decent house in some chicago or dc area burbs.
go to realtor.com and look up houses in different cities to get an idea.
Re: What is a "good" salary?
Oh I use that site a lot. Makes me think how expensive UK is. :(
I see Madison, Wisconsin is too cheap man. Seems a nice university town too, so that's a plus. A gf of mine spent some time in the US as a student and visited Madison, she really liked it.
UK is too expensive man. Makes you turn to drink and drugs.

you guys are so lucky that you can get mortgage upto 5 times of the annual income. here in UK you can't get it. (not talking about JOINT application) Recently banks started to give upto 6 times of annual income, but there are few terms and cinditions. (for the 1st time buyers). Here in London AVERAGE house price is £320K.. which equals to about $650K... :whistling
Re: What is a "good" salary?
Exactly!
UK is a rip off. That's why once I get my MA (hopefully) or have some assetts, I'm of to America, or Canada or somewhere else.
Re: What is a "good" salary?
Good salary in US is $75K or above for a jawan. To live a decent life, meaning both you and your wife drive BMW/Merc/Jag, live in a $500K house, and have enough cash left over at the end of the month to save, then it's around $200K+.
Anything less, then you are just living on a month to month basis.

5 times avg income is on teh high side, banks usually try to keep it at 3 to 3.5 times the salary.
London houe prices seem to be comparable to house prices in Large US cities like San Francsico, LA, Ny and Chicago. Of course as you move away from the city prices are different in London, as well as in NYC and Chicago.
So the challenges felt by first time homeowners in expenseive cities are the same. Once you are in the market and real estate goes up, your property value goes up with it so you can trade up, but for new ppl the cliff can be high.

why dont you get your masters from US? would be much easier for you to find a job locally then.
Re: What is a "good" salary?
$30K is enough to get anyone 3 meals, some rags and a roof. (rotee kapRa makaan). If your girl (or guy) is choosing you simply because you make his or her minimum expected $, i'd try to keep some distance from that person.
Completely disagree. You would choose a girl (or guy) based on whether he or she is responsible enough to strive for the best he could do for his or her prospective family. That should be the biggest criteria, in fact.
Re: What is a "good" salary?
Dentists start with around $80 to $100K's (Canadian), while pharmacists tend to be in $ 70K (Canadian) range. I need to decide and breeze through the next 4 years quickly to catch up to Dr. Fraudia's khazaana.
Re: What is a "good" salary?
I am a shaman, a dervesh, to catch up with me you have to give away all your money. I know it can be tough, so send it to me and I will take care of getting rid of it for you.

Re: What is a "good" salary?
You got me completely wrong, there are plenty of good charities I can go and donate your money to.
these are well known organizations as well, so its not like I will give it to soem fake charity. These organizations are global and benefit tens of thousands of people who depend on them for their survival.
You may have heard of some of these organizations as well. here is a list
Giorgio Armani
Prada
Patek Philippe
Coach
Burberry
etc.
Re: What is a "good" salary?
Only chavs were Burberry.
I'm of to work!

Cost of MA in the US for intl student seems to hover around that £15-20 K mark for a tier 3/4 school as per US News rankings profiles. That's next amount of money. For a good school (georgetown has a program I'd love to do), but costs incured would be at 20-30K £ inc. cost of living in all these sums.
Just dont have that sort of paper yet.
Unless you know of any scholarships etc.
May do a 2nd MA (hopefully) stateside once I get one from here.
