So like I’ve said before, people like this don’t listen to reason and don’t pick up on hints. You HAVE to be direct and sometimes a bit rude for them to get the message. Start with just saying “Aunty, I really prefer not to discuss certain topics” to which she will reply “aray beta hum to family hain” and then you say “to phir meri pichli pachees saal ki eidi to de dain, family ki chachi”.

Then for extra credit, round house kick her in the face.

You know if we made sketches/scenes from the scenarios you so artfully describe, we could have one of the best desi comedies ever …

I don't know what it is with new immigrant pakis and putting a price on everything! One of my good friends married and moved here and she goes around telling everyone down tithe dollar amounts for things and buys! I don't get it. I think it's a mentality thing but it looks so cheap. If I compliment her furniture or watch or something she'll always tell me where, when, how much discount she got off it and how much it originally was. Lol it bothers me because if I mention shell always ask how much was this of that. She managed to get our rent out of me. It's not on purpose but she always mentions how much! Pakis always need to know?!

Hi everyone,

How do you respond to someone (say, a family friend) who insists on knowing how much salary you earn and who just won't give in despite you dodging the question?

My parents have known this one family from Pakistan for many years now. They came to Canada around the same time as us, and we used to see them regularly back then but then they went back to Pakistan after getting citizenship and we haven't really kept in touch.

They're back in Canada now that their children are high school/university going. So my parents invited them over for dinner and their oldest daughter started interviewing me and my siblings on what schooling process we went through to get to where we are now and how much each one of us makes exactly. It was easier to change the topic with her because she is younger than me. But then her mom started asking me the same.

At first, I just smiled and gave her a weird look. But she started giving me actual figures then, wanting to confirm if I make above a certain pay grade. I felt really trapped and finally just said 'alhamdulillah, isi range main hai'. Then she started joking with me, okay good good, so when are you taking us shopping? Again, I tried to laugh it off but she kept pressing, 'aray, smile baad main kar lena, pehle batao kab shopping leke ja rahi ho'.

I was very annoyed to say the least. I don't know why some desi people don't have any boundaries. It is one thing to try to get information about a career line by asking in general how much one can expect to earn and what their options are. But to be so specific and nosy, knowing fully well that you're irritating the next person and still not stopping. :(

How would you have responded in this scenario without being rude?

Do you really think that she wanted you to get her to shopping?
If yes then she needs therapy :D
If no, then she must be joking (may be over) and wasn’t acquainted with western style joking. It has nothing to do with crossing boundaries, if she didn’t want you to get her to shopping literally.

It's like someone asking you how much you weigh or how often you take a shower - an entirely personal question that is no one else's business.

I could give examples of some more extremely personal questions to the list, but you can use your imagination to fill them in.

It's not the quantity of showers, but the quality of the showers that are more important ... You should ask, what soap do you use exactly to shower, and then make a recommendation for Radox or something like that. :D

Taking this analogy further - that would mean that you believe you're entitled to ask each and every person who sits next to you, whether it be on the train, at work, at the masjid or any other place how often they've showered.

Or would the question only be reserved to those whose showering habits impacted you, i.e. - only the stinky people who making breathing or inhaling a challenge.

That's not what bugged me. You highlighted the part in my post about people not having boundaries. I had said that in reference to the salary question, not the shopping.

Why would you want random people who are not even family to know what you make? It's none of their concern. And if it's really not personal in your eyes, then do you mind sharing with GS how much you make, ButtSb?

A really awkward situation to be in.... In particularly if you don't want to be rude. Even if they are rude doesn't mean you have to be...

I think you saying you make 'enough' should do the trick and if they ask again insisting. You just repeat what you said earlier. An endless circle of repeated words should shut them up eventually.
