It’s not only the dictators but general attitude of the army leadership. Even when they are not in power they do not let go their specific mentality of promoting certain agendas which are extremely harmful for the country. They have turned the country in to a security state rather than a welfare state.
However I disagree with you that the army dictatorship is the main problem of the country. The main problem of the country is the main stream population accepting and supporting these army agendas and dictatorships. Apart from the last couple of years of General Musharraf, general public never protested against these army dictators and their activities.

good points Diamond321. i agree that the economy was a lot better during musharraf’s rule and i can only imagine how difficult it must be for the poor to make ends meet in the wake of soaring inflation in the last few years. unreasonably high inflation however is not a phenomenon unique to Pakistan. i was reading somewhere just recently that india is facing double digit food inflation as well despite the fact that its economy is going strong, something that is not the case with Pakistan. economic mismanagement is no doubt one of the reasons behind Pakistan’s economic woes but these woes are exacerbated by the fact that a significant chunk of Pakistan’s very rich and traders do not pay enough taxes, if at all, and that foreign investment has seriously plummeted because of the abysmal law and order situation prevalent in the country. still we do not have many viable alternatives, who have a chance of actually getting elected and leading the country, to zardari; other politicians are just as self-centered and either unwilling or incapable of showing the statesmanship pakistan needs in times like these.

The Biggest Problem for Pakistan is that the people follow blindly, they do not think nor does they like to put their brains in any kind of exercise before making any decision/comment, when it commons to follow a leader, they try to make him bigger then God and opponent tries to make the same leader look like a devil.
The balance in attitude, the civic sense, the ability to foresee the future and their long-run interest is the missing traits and the main problem in the Pakistanies in General. These problems have given birth to elite politician leadership who may struggle to find a role of a Joker in international circus… this weak and characterless leadership has strengthen other institutes such army… to dictate their terms..
In normal circumstances ( in developed countries) the strength of the political leadership is its popularity in the general public i.e. voters… which is gained by taking measures to improve the lifestyle of the masses.. in Pakistan, the political leadership has done very little or next to nothing to improve the lifestyle of the masses… their intend to gain popularity is from some JALSAS and/or BAYANAT… there are rare cases when any political leadership has actually did something… so they have to rely on the army and/or establishment to stay in power…

Just to add something to what you wrote above. I don’t know if people have any idea how much industrial development & it’s survival have been affected by this electricity management failures. So many factories have been shout down because of non availability of power. The inflated cost of electricity is embedded in the cost of manufactured goods as variable cost thus making our locally manufactured goods more expensive and hence it’s becoming hard to compete with the international market. China has offered good solutions to Pakistan regarding electricity issue but the present govt is not interested in providing any ease to it’s people. You know the place in Karachi where Bilawal House is located , load-shedding never takes place ! so when they rich & ugly politicians are enjoying a luxurious life why would they be concerned with the sufferings of masses ?

this is the reason why we have someone like ZARDARI as our president. When Benazir died the whole nation was haye haye benazir mar gayee ! yes it was a very sad incident because apart from being a politician she was a mother too and death of any innocent life is condemnable BUT people quickly forgot about what Benazir & Mr 10% did in their last regime. Benazir’s last regime was the worst ! I think it was the 1st time Pakistan saw so much corruption . She too took Pakistan under IMF’s debts and in return did nothing for the country. But people forgot everything and just because Zardari lost his wife and became a widower people went on to vote for PPP.
Also , in interior sind these bhuttos have done nothing to develop and flourish them. Yet these interior sindh people give votes to them blindly and this can be said for all sectors including punjabi , baluchis , pathans etc.

i completely agree. lack of electricity is definitely hurting the competitiveness of Pakistan’s exports, making it difficult to meet deadlines and also impeding the capability of some people like tailors etc to practice their craft in order to make a living. it doesn’t help at all as you said that the elite continues to inhabit its cozy little bubble, while the plight of the masses continues to worsen. it is all really quite sad.

The three major problems that pakistan is facing internally and externally are;
America, Cia, Raw, Mossad who are carrying out all the bombings in pakistan.
2)The current corrupt president and his corrupt party.
3)Judiciary whos not taking actions against the corruption.

X2 & Goodname: I agree with what you are saying, but the fact remains that Shia’s, ahmedi’s etc are the ‘marginalised’ muslims and therefore targeted by the so called 'true muslims" .
The three main problems facing Pakistan are
Religious extremism
Control of the Economy & politics by elite/fuedals and
Dominance of the Army in all facets of the economy & interference in politics.
If the people of pakistan want to prosper, they need to focus on triming these three.

everything left on Allah without thinking that God helps those who help themselves

not sure about shias being marginalised, some of the top leaders in the country are shia, there is sectarian crap affecting people but people in general are marginalised, more due to where they fall economically than anything else.
while I agree what u list are real issues, I think they are symptoms of issues in education and justice

Lack of education amongst the masses
Poverty (No significant oil reserves or gold mines)
Bad leadership
I think once these are put right, all the rest will sort itself out. The Budget needs to be directed towards this. It’s the only way we will better ourselves.

Good points. I think VVIP culture or ‘jeehuzoori’ is one of THE biggest reasons why Pakistani society in general is so lazy (dependent on others), selfish, illiterate, incompetent and backward. This curse promotes sifarish and corruption in almost every walk of life. Those in privileged positions (both civilian and military) abuse their power, position and privileges (because they know that there is no system of accountability and they can literally get away with anything) and are generally lazy. The higher you go in your field the less hard work you do unlike in western societies
