Re: Wedding set
does anybody know anything about created rubies or gemstones? Are they just as valuable as the real rubies that we get in Pakistan or India.....they aren't fakes right?
I wanna buy a ruby set that I saw in a store but when she said it was created ruby, I wasn't sure whether I should buy or not...
depends on where its made...
usually a lab grown diamond and a real diamond are no different - they have identical physical properties and therefore both are real.
for rubies, just make sure they haven't dyed them to create a richer redder color.
value-wise, they should cost you less but be appraised at the same amount as a natural ruby since, if its like diamonds, then both are the same thing, just grown differently.
Re: Wedding set
you should do some research into this… lab grown diamonds have the same value as mined diamonds**… their physical properties are identical. however, they haven’t yet perfected a clear diamond in a lab situation… most diamonds that are “grown” are coloured, like yellow, blue or pink. i’d say once they perfect the clear diamond, de beers and the diamond cartels are going dowwwwnnn.
**edited to say i’m not 100% sure if this is true… i will do more research and post back.
Re: Wedding set
Created stones like sapphires, rubies etc donot have the same face value as naturally occuring stones.
Thats why they are cheaper (im not saying cheap) than the natural ones.
They look the same, have the same physical properties but are not as expensive as their natural buddies because no hard labor has gone in creating 'em.
Finding stones is not easy, they dont grow on trees. The main reason why they are so expensive are because its a back breaking process of fossicking for them.
With created stones there is also an advantage of having color variety, like created pink sapphires.
However it would be wrong to say that both are the same, natural occuring minerals form after years and years of earth shifting, heat, volcanoes and what not.
Lab created ones donot.
Re: Wedding set
has any 1 bought diamonds from ebay?
Re: Wedding set
i suppose my point was, if people are content to wear silver sets “washed” in 22K gold “pani”, as opposed to actual 22K gold, then fussing about a ruby that is lab created and, to the non-gemologist is actually the same as a real, mined ruby, is a bit ridiculous. more than a bit ridiculous, in fact.
only a trained gemologist can tell the difference between a mined stone and a lab-created stone. and most people are not trained gemologists.
“Synthetic rubies (lab-created) are real rubies as far as their chemical properties are concerned. Because they are made in a laboratory instead of by nature, they are not considered natural…
Another method is the flux-growth process. This process takes much longer and can produce rubies that are difficult to distinguish from natural rubies. The ingredients are melted into a flux (molten chemical) and are then crystallized under restricted conditions. This process may take many months to complete.”

also LOL but is “fossicking” a real word? ![]()
Re: Wedding set
this ring seems a mega deal to me… what do u.diamond experts think?
Re: Wedding set
thanks everybody for the info on lab created rubies :). For some reason I thought that in the United States they mostly sell only lab created ones and the natural kinds are sold outside the US.
Re: Wedding set
they might have the same physical properties..but they have nt same value..derefore the difference in the prices..if u dnt trust me go to some jewellers....and dnt tell me to research ..as am nt sayng it from point of view of chemistry
lab ones r always cheaper hunny

I understand your point but when you said that lab created and naturally occuring stones hold the same value I had to correct you.
Im not an officially trained gemologist as I dont have my papers yet but Im stuyding to be one hence the correction.
Fossicking is a very real world as real as the blood in our viens.
Fossiciking is referred to the actual process of finding gems at a dig.
I have so far fossicked for sapphires, garnets, topaz and emeralds. Not to mention Quartz and Smokey Quartz which in Pakistan is known as Black Topaz. Flourite and Mylobdenite, Silver and Tin
It aint an easy job, as you dont know whether the spot you have picked will deliver results. First you study the rock and the sand in the area. Once you think youve found the right spot then you start digging studying the soil that comes out till you get to the part of the soil thats called WASH. The WASH is then seived and washed in huge seives and then is the best part, sorting through all the rocks to see if there is a gem.
I've posted heaps of pics from my fossicking escapades.
Re: Wedding set
ooh have you been to that national park in the US where for a small fee you can search for diamonds, and what you find, you keep?
i've always wanted to go there!
fossicking- new word of the day! :) thanks for the info!
how did you get into studying gemology?

Oh these are pretty:biggthumb

No I havent, places like those are abundant in Australia and they might be fun for the novice but if you are after bigger specimens then they are a let down because those people first go through the wash to take out all the bigger specimens and then dump the wash for the people to find small things.
Its a good exercise/outing for people with young kids.
Ive done it in the beginning and sometimes just to sample the wash around the area.
Im more into fossicking but once you get into it, not knowing what you are finding gets frustrating, hence me and my better half started studying gemology on the side.
Fossicking I duno how we got started on it, kinda happened like 4 years ago went on a trip, loved it and havent looked back since then.
Its more of an adventure if its a hobby, you spend an entire day at a dig not knowing what you are going to end up with by the end of the day.
Re: Wedding set
Thanks starcity :)
Re: Wedding set
gold and diamonds are very expensive.. I would love to wear some designer jewelry that looks like gold or diamond. Any suggestions??
Re: Wedding set
fashion you can always try CZs, the good thing bout CZs are that they are much more shinier than diamonds.
Re: Wedding set
how can u tell if rubies or other stones are real or not? From USA or from PK? Also the stones at stores like Kay, Zales, etc are they are? And are they worth buying?
Re: Wedding set
I duno bout USA stores and their authencity but usually the best way to tell is the price tag.
If the price tag is reasonably low then its best to ask if the stones are Created or natural.
Most jewellery stores donot advertise the Created part, they'll just write Rubies or Garnets or Sapphires on the display but they are required to tell you if you ask whether the stones are created or not.
How to tell a stone apart from a fake one requires study, you have to know bout cleavages and fractures and light reflections. Not an easy thing to do.
Re: Wedding set
Those are beautiful!!!
What metal are they set in? I honestly can’t believe the deal you got on them!!!
Re: Wedding set
So when u buy a ruby ring in PK how do u know if it is real? They usually don't tell. I know when I bought a diamond ring they had this diamond meter which can tell if the diamonds are real or not....
