Actually gold is good from investment point of view too. You can lose money in shares but not in gold. So when you have to spend money, why not spend it on the real stuff instead going for gold plated (ofcourse if your budget allows it).
Also if you are travelling from overseas, try to make a stop at the dubai/sharjah and buy your gold from the duty free. You will get it for less compared to Pakistan. You can always get the design changed in Pakistan.
^ if the rates keep going the way they're going, this obsession might just die out.
The obsession will die for a time period. But once this ecnomic crisis kinds of settles down and the country is more stable, the prices will eventually go down.

Isn't it basic economics?
When there's an inflation of prices....it creates a surplus of products or services... which leads to lower prices....which will lead to a shortage which will then lead to inflation...its a cycle.. at least this is what i remember from macroecon.. :D
^ It's an investment..if ull be willing to sell it later on right? but then selling it has its own issues doesnt it?
you are still not losing anything. You can always get the designs changed, trade it for other kind of jewelry, etc. Or just keep it as it is. Maybe when it is time for your kids to get married, you can always pass your jewelry on to them... one less thing to worry about i guess...:)

y is it that gold is traditionally such a big deal for desis but not as much as diamond or platinum? platinum and diamonds are much more expensive than gold haina? so why is yellow gold the thing?
Having said that, I know in Pakistan when you buy diamonds they actually give you a guarantee card where you can sell 'em later say for financial reasons and give 75% of the purchase price.
Where as Gold sets you pay not only for the gold itself but also the Karigari.
If you go sell it however you dont get the Karigari back, just the weight of the gold.
i think because gold is worn more...how many people actually wear platinum on a daily basis..? gold looks good (depends on the design)....goes with everything (not the yellowish kind though)....and is far more versatile than any other metal.
I think it's just the desi mentality Sara where they weigh everything in GOLD. The riches of a person in our culture is calculated by how much sona they have. Maybe it's just that they compare platinums to silver or something and it may not attract them so much. Alot of people are not even aware of how expensive platinum is. It could also be because gold just dominates our culture and people don't always get a chance to go beyond that in terms of precious stones, platinum, diamonds, etc. Recently, there was a wedding where the bride was decked in gold from head to bottom. She had this crazy big gold set on, about 36 gold bangles on each arm, etc etc.. and all we heard throughout the wedding from aunties was haiii kitne ameer hain yeh log. And then there was the dulhan's mom who was wearing a platinum/sapphire set which probably costed more and aunties kept asking, beti ki shadi mein sona pehnti.. itna acha lagta.
Do u think its more of a quantity vs quality thing? Like u can have big gold sets but for that same price, u'd get very tiny platinum and diamond stuff??
does anybody know anything about created rubies or gemstones? Are they just as valuable as the real rubies that we get in Pakistan or India.....they aren't fakes right?
I wanna buy a ruby set that I saw in a store but when she said it was created ruby, I wasn't sure whether I should buy or not...
