Pakistan’s former captain Wasim Akram has made it clear that he was not in a position to sign any full time coaching contract with anyone and in such an event would obviously give preference to a coaching assignment in Pakistan.
His wife Huma told this correspondent from Lahore on Wednesday that Wasim who is presently in India on an assignment for ESPN/Star Sports had called up to make it clear no one had offered him any coaching assignment as bowling coach with the Indian team nor had he expressed any interest in such a assignment.
“Wasim has signed a one-year contract to work for ESPN/Star Sports and obviously for the next one year he is not in a position to take up any regular coaching assignment,” she explained.
Huma said that she was surprised to learn about a court case being filed asking the court to restrain Wasim from coaching the Indian team.
“Some foreigner had informally told Wasim that he was among three former players being discussed to work as bowling coach of the Indian team. But that was it and Wasim also never seriously thought about such a thing because of his contract with ESPN,” she said.
She said Wasim had made it clear that if he was to show interest in a coaching assignment his first preference would be Pakistan.
The former Pakistan fast bowler retired from International cricket earlier this year after finishing a 19-years illustrious international career by taking 502 One-day International and 414 Test wickets.
The story takes a further twist…
From this report it seems Akram would be delighted to coach the Indian team formally if approached by the board, but since the board has ruled that out, Akram is willing to ‘help’ the players in Australia.

BCCI rules out Akram as bowling coach

Wasim Akram
KOLKATA: Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram has agreed to coach John Wright’s ‘request’ to ‘help out’ Indian pacers during their tour of Australia starting next week.
Akram’s involvement with the Indian team, in whatever capacity, is significant. The BCCI has, however, categorically stated that it has no plans to use his services as bowling coach.
“I don’t know why some people are making such speculation. We didn’t even think of it,” BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya told reporters here. Should India use Akram to coach Indian pacers?
The BCCI chief said the matter was never discussed with Akram , who retired from international cricket recently. “Nor has he broached the subject before us,” he said.
Akram, who is in Kolkata in connection with a programme of a private sports channel , told TNN, '‘John (coach John Wright ) has been requesting me to help out the boys for sometime now. And I would love to do it.”
He, however, clarified that the Indian board has not approached him officially for the purpose. “If I am asked to be their bowling coach, I would be delighted,’ he said.
Asked what “helping” the Indian team would mean, Akram said, “Some of the boys like Ashish ( Nehra ) and Zaheer do call me up from time to time, asking for tips and suggestions. I have always found time for a chat with them. I shall continue doing so during the Australian tour, where I will be going as a commentator.”
What is unclear is whether Akram’s help will be gratis or a financial remuneration is involved. He remained tightlipped on the matter. However, with the board president denying any move to appoint Akram, it is unlikely that anyone else will foot the bill.
Dalmiya’s reaction was sought on Wednesday after press reports that Akram was appointed bowling coach on Wright and Sourav Ganguly’s suggestion.
Notwithstanding Dalmiya’s denial, Akram’s enthusiasm as well as his confirmation that he will help out the seamers, especially the left-armers, is good news for Indian cricket.

What a way to treat your hero. I am sure Wasim Akram is proud of Supporters like you.

Pakistan stake Wasim claim
Wasim (left) is in demand for his coaching services
Pakistan want fast-bowling legend Wasim Akram to take up a coaching role.
The invite comes a day after the former Pakistan skipper was controversially linked to a job with arch-rivals India.
The Indian cricket board later denied Wasim had been approached to coach bowlers during the Australia tour.
Pakistan Cricket Board chief executive Ramiz Raja said: **“Wasim has every right to accept any coaching assignment. But we feel his first priority should be given to Pakistan.” **
Wasim retired in May this year after taking 414 Test wickets and a world record 502 scalps in one-day games in a 19-year career.
Ramiz added: **“Wasim has a role to play in coaching and grooming our young players and we will offer him coaching assignments at every level.” **
Pakistan coach Javed Miandad said there would not have been any controversy, had it been any other team apart from India.
Miandad said: **“People in this country are very emotional about ties with India and with the Indians coming to Pakistan next year, obviously they were not willing to accept Wasim as a bowling coach for them.” **
The Indian government last month ended a three-year boycott of bilateral cricket matches against Pakistan, paving the way for the arch-rivals to schedule a Test series in Pakistan in March next year.
i guess the feared indian attack will have to find another bowling coach. something tells me if wasim and waqar bowled for their team, they'd find a way to become mediocre. maybe they should grow moustaches like kapil and srinath, you can't be good unless you have a moustache.

Asif, Wasim already held talks with PCB cheif when he was in lahore, i will dig out hte newspaper link in which he was assured of an assignment with the board and PCB is reacting only because of cooked up stories by indian newspapers which even indian board denies.

Why do you think he wants to come to India? At least there he won't get tamaatar anda for the slightest mistake.
My own antenna tells me that Wasim allowed these rumours for one of 3 reasons -
1)He is genuinely a nice guy who gives help whenever someone asks him irrespective of borders.
2)He is thinking of moving out of Pakistan now that he has a cushion in ESPN. It would take him to India very often and being the Indian team's coach along with a house in Mumbai is very attractive.
3) He wanted to galvanise the PCB into making this offer.

Sweetdreams, talk about inflated ego. Coaching and helping a team is one thing what you are suggesting is far fetched and unrealistic to say the least. Even before ESPN he was well off, I don't think he prefers mumbai over Lahore, never.

Better than burning houses, I say.
For your information, Wasim was in talks with PCB even before he was retired.
Not that I think he can help the vastly talented Paki bowlers.

Never said he was not well off, or that he prefers Mumbai over Lahore. Instead of attacking my ego, how about you find an explanation for this -
The rumours have been going around for 2-3 days, the whole world heard them, Wasim must have too, yet he chose not to make an immediate denial.
When asked, he confirmed that Wright and Ganguly had asked him to coach the bowlers and said, 'I would love to become the Indian bowling coach if the BCCI approaches me.'
(would that entail living in Mumbai? Yes or no?)

I would really appreciate if you can show me where he said that.

Read page 3 of this thread where I posted a report of his comments -

Saby - Look at the first thread to know where This COOKED UP story appeared FIRST. I am sure you will ignore that and blame it on Indian Media. This story was reported by every newspaper in the world (which covers cricket) including the BBC. Wasim may have been in talks with PCB, I am not denying that but I dont think he got any positive response from them . To me this attempt of his looks like a well thought out plan of Wasim Akram which forced PCB to respond fearing backlash from fans. :)

Karina - 1 & 3 are spot on. 2nd option is not possible. He is a very smart guy and knows how to mend PCB.
ehsan bhai - Why do you think it is her inflated ego. John wright has been living in India for quite some time now. If Akram does get an offer from BCCI and accepts it he Mumbai/Delhi/Banglore are more likely to become his temporary home.
