When its a paid channel, i can understand they have the data on the viewership .. but when its a free to air channel , like for example we have SKY in the UK , some of their channels are free to air , how do they calculate the TRP’s there ?
Specially from the perspective of gaining advertisement from businesses, alot of them will want to know first who the viewership is and then make this costly decision of advertisement. So how does it all work?
What kind of surveys Umer? I can understand the Estimation bit , but as a business if I were to advertise in a certain time slot of a paticular channel, i would definitely want to know more details of the viewership in that slot, right? estimation might not make me fully comfortable spending so much , but it wont put me off either ..
But then I will genuinely question where they have gotten their information from? and thats what I want to know how channels do their viewership segmentation .. i have had SKY free to air channels since years and never filled a survey .. would they know I am a viewer? what my key TV watching slots are ? etc etc
Do TRPs really matters now in the presence of hundred channels (just one click on remote control), while taking decision of advertisement? people change channel during advertisement break
I still think they matter. As a business, particularly a small one, why would I spend such hefty amount of advertisement money on a channel that is not able to give me clear segmentation data?
However, if TRP is one of the outdated methods, then do we have a better method to replace it? has anyone got any knowledge how businesses take decisions to spend on TV advertisement? considering that its one of the most expensive forms of advertisement:hmmm:
Wondered abt same thing. Not a clue. Could it be each time someone goes to a channel that program gets credit for that time slot. Si if u flipped thru 10 channels in 5 min all 10 Chan get credit?
Southie, thats the exact question that husband asked me yesterday .. most of us flip channels during advertisements or even while watching shows .. so how do the channels get reliable data that someone is a loyal viewer of a certain time slot:hmmm:
I think if they are using some sort of credit thing for channels, that wouldnt really reflect the viewership, it would just mean that people are going through channels but for a business to make a decision what and when they want to invest in, they would need a very important info : which time slot has stable viewership ..
There must be a other ways .. gotta find out .. anyone knows?
Some channels offer higher rates for particular time (Prime time 7 to 10 pm) and low rates onwards. Saas Bahoo serials gets more ads than News talk shows. why?
Saasbahu serials are watched by majority and a business likes to advertise themselves to majority , specially if the products are every day use like cosmetics, detergents, dresses, internet services etc etc
On the other hand, news shows are only watched by a specific segment of viewership, who wont be much interested in cosmetics adverts ! so they dont get as many adverts ..
The most important thing being that TV advertisement is not a small chunk of investment. It really is extremely costly. So businesses try to extract maximum value out of the investment. Hence why so much interest in timeslots and programmes that have a huge TRP ..
they put a box in homes whose owners agree to participate in the survey. these boxes collect all the data regarding the channels you watch [not when you are browsing channels]...these data are then analyzed.
Thanks Ninja and KKF , thats exactly how Viewership is measured in Pakistan as well .. I wonder if thats the case in the western world as well
We do have sky boxes but then we are not a paid customer, we only watch free to air channels .. does that mean they can still record us?
Also I dont remember every having taken part in survey of any kind .. Neither have any friends done that , so clearly it means that there must be another method out there that collects the TRP data ..
The networks pay for folks to be at your house 24/7. They follow you around everywhere a TV is installed. One person is assigned for each resident. And they log your TV experience - be it from the commode or elsewhere.
ohhh ok I see that now , thanks KKF .. so basically they arent really recording the data from everyone, they create a pool of people who sign up the surveys .. once they have data on this pool of people, they will then analyze it and thats what gets presented to businesses when they want to know the statistics
