Re: Valentine’s Day
What is the story behind ‘Lohri’. Nt heard much about that and just knew that after watching controversial movie ‘Veer Zara’.
I think ‘Holi’ is celebrated as spring festival and related to harvest of crops.

Lohri is celebrated on the eve of sun's movement to winter solstice called Uttrayan, Sun enters Capricorn Zodiac, Makar Rashi.
Holi is celebrated at the end of hindu calender of phalgul, last full moon, poornima, It marks end of the winter season.
Spring festival is called Basant Panchmi
Re: Valentine's Day
So many festivals. Yes we don't need any of the foreign /imported festivals. But why you called Lohri romantic? How it is celebrated?

Guru Gobind singh wanted casteless and class less society, all religious leader of worlds were always socialists. In lohri people assemble at one place and make a bonfire, where young ladies and gents also dance together so it is quite an indirect way of impressing each other. this is the reason it had romantic undertones. You might have seen this in the movie Veer Zaara as well.
Holi was played by Bhagwan Krishn with Raadha and other gopikas, hence it also has romantic connotations.
Re: Valentine's Day
^so how they propose each other in veer zaara is authentic lohri custom?

Re: Valentine's Day

Correct, and there are only few boys in the world who can retain there decency when punjabans are dancing:D
How about Soyamar where girls were given right to chose their life partners? When and how it started and then abandoned?
It is Swayamvar, Swayam means self, var means bridegroom, it was the system followed by the kings. the princess would be looking her husband among the princes invited in the swayamvar, it is mentioned in all religious epics of Hinduism. Last famous swayamvar of princess Sanyogita of Kannauj, who was "fida" on Prithviraj Chauhan of Delhi and her father was against him and did not support prithviraj against ghouri and after prithvi, ghouri decimated kannauj as well. In a way elite women in India still choose their husbands, Love marriage is toned downed version of swaymvar
Re: Valentine’s Day
Balle Balle ni tor punjaban di
Last famous Swaymvar is of Rakhi Sawnat & now Veena Malik. Miss Meera jee at the rate hotmale also tried to copy style, but failed. ![]()
On a serious note, be it Swaymvar or choosing life partner through love marriage remain with elite class. ![]()
Re: Valentine’s Day
Indeed, Punjabans are the only one who can maintain their beauty with glamor, this is precisely what more beautiful kashmiris and pathans can’t do. Carrying beauty graciously and with glamor is always punjaban’s domain:D
these were for commercial purposes, being elite and thinking elite is different things, only difference between elites and normal person has that normal person has to stand in front of society and family and for elites it is acceptable. Elites were always above rule of society:)
