Valentines day in its self is also a 'cultural' invasion of the world. Go back 10 years and there was no concept of the day especially in Pakistan. To create awareness of the day (like its historical significance), I believe is perfectly fine. The only thing is that the people should not take law in their hands while stopping people from celebrating.
Cultural invasion is not one sided thing, even out people are in huge number in west, isn't punjabi being third most spoken in Britain is cultural invasion by Punjabis in west? Isn't mosques, temples, Gurudwara are cultural invasion in britain, but west doesn't oppose the way we do, and we do this even if we have more pressing issues such as swine flu, dengue, malaria here
Noone has right to beat me if I want to damn celebrate it thats it :)
^ thats what I said, one has the right to create awareness on the pros and cons of it. Its not the right of individuals to forcibly try to stop it as that creates ripples in the society. Besides who ever wants to celebrate will still do the same (albeit in hiding). Educating people is the key.

That’s not what cultural invasion is. Cultural invasion is when our main stream media cover westerners’’ trend, float such ideas for comercial benifits, and project such day as national enthusiasm. And in west, it would be when western media starts covering others' cultural events with same spirits as our media do.

Who stops you by force from celebrating the day?
I think west did played its part to cover various aspects of desi culture. Their writers wrote much more about our culture than our own writers. Writers like William Darlymple wrote on subjects from Delhi's culture to sufi / spiritual traditions in our part of the world. The problem lies with Desi psyche who started detesting their values. Commercialisation of Desi festivals can also created interest in people, as we see in case of Indian soaps which promoted Bindi and stuff even in Pakistan

problem is we are much more flexible regarding losing our identity that is in the name of liberalism.
do you think that amount of coverage given to easteran cultures and religious rituals by western media is same as our media gives coverage to western trends?
you would hardly see BBC's coverage on muslims' eid festival more than 5 five minute on whole.
no coverage for such festivals on thier local transmission lines. Our media transmision quality is way poor than quality of transmision of their local media.

We could have exploit the situation post 9/11 to promote soft and real image of Islam and Muslims, but we didn't. majority of the material (if written for Islam) came from those western writers.

You came to know such writers perhaps because you are interested in things like sufism as in your earlier post. I bet 99.99 percent poeple would have no knowledge about the writer you mentioned in your post earlier. Having said that electronic media create thousand time greater impact than print media do.
we have more number of writers writing to make their "lords" happy.

electronic media does have a larger impact, but in western countries print media also impacts a large public, because people read books there. I think many of the visitors here might have heard the names of books like ' The last Mughal' and 'White Mughal' by Willaim Darlymple.
and sufism doesn't have to do anything with post 9/11 except for providing soft image of Islam
I agree to your point that our media is cheap, but they sell what is sold easily. Its over all indicator of likings of our society. If society got insulted for promoting ideas like Valentines Day, it should have rejected it at first stance decade ago. But the story is otherwise. People did gave support to western days lik VD, Mothers Day, Friendship day and this acceptance is reflected and further promoted by media.
A whole lot of people in west were converted to Islam after 911 and it was also because of the efforts made collectively by people ‘without’ being able to use media.
The media covered only negative aspect of Islam but it backfired.

by the same analogy you would agree that people have no problem with army take over as no agitation by people is observed. But, i m sure you wont.
