Up to 40 militants killed in South, North Waziristan Updated at 1815 PST

MIRANSHAH: Pakistani helicopter gunships and artillery pounded militant hideouts in a tribal region near the Afghan border, killing up to 40 insurgents, the army said Wednesday. “We have reports from local sources that 30 to 40 miscreants have been killed in a security forces operation targeting a hideout in South Waziristan,” Director General ISPR Major General Waheed Arshad said. He said that the operation involving US-built Cobra gunships began late Tuesday and fighting was ongoing. “The ground troops have started reaching the area for mopping-up operations once the firing ends,” Arshad added. He said the area where the operation took place, known as Punj Ziarat, was on the border between the troubled tribal zones of South and North Waziristan, where US officials have said that Al-Qaeda is regrouping. Militants in Punj Ziarat had mounted several attacks on security force convoys passing through the region. “The miscreants were occupying mountaintops. We used artillery and Cobra gunship helicopters to dislodge them,” Arshad added.

Hundreds of Chechens, Tajiks, Uzbeks, and other foreigners were killed not to long ago in Waziristan, and I hope the rest are now being taken care of.

Fierce fighting raged overnight between Pakistani troops and pro-Taleban militants near the Afghan border.
The army says up to 30 militants may have been killed in the clashes around Nawazkot just inside the border of the South Waziristan tribal area.

A local official told the BBC that 10 troops had also been killed. The army says they were injured.

Violence has soared since troops were sent in to oust radical Islamists from Islamabad’s Red Mosque in July.

More than 100 people died in the operation.

US visit

The Nawazkot area is close to Ramzak, an important military town across the border in North Waziristan.

The militants are reported to have attacked a military post manned by 16 soldiers, sparking a battle in which the military called in army helicopter gunships.

“There were repeated attacks, which were repelled… We are hearing from local sources that militants suffered massive casualties,” military spokesman Gen Waheed Arshad told the Associated Press news agency.

He says troops were only injured, not killed.

But a local official confirmed to the BBC that 10 soldiers had been killed, and nine troops injured in the clashes.

He said eight pro-Taleban militants were also killed.

The latest fighting coincides with a visit to Pakistan by the American deputy secretary of state, John Negroponte.

The United States is pressing Pakistan to take stronger action against Taleban and al-Qaeda militants operating from its border areas.

Kidnapping spree

There has been a spate of kidnappings in and around the tribal areas in recent weeks.

Scores of soldiers abducted a fortnight ago are still being held in South Waziristan. The rebels say they are holding about 300 troops.

On Wednesday, 12 more soldiers were abducted outside the town of Bannu, just over the border from North Waziristan in North West Frontier Province.

The militants have demanded the release of a number of prisoners and an end to military deployment in their area.

Last month, militants beheaded a kidnapped soldier and videotaped the killing.

Correspondents say that the kidnapping of so many soldiers, apparently without a fight, has been a major embarrassment for the authorities.

Good job coming up with no proof. Do you want me to list the name of thousands of Pakistanis killed by your jihadi terrorist heros? You seem so obsessed with MQM, while jihadis are busy blowing up 60 shops, beheading people, blowing up historical statues, abducting 300 soldiers all in last week or so!

Can you really be so blind? You're the type of person who will still be cursing the imaginary threat of mohajirs even if you get captured by taliban and are about to be beheaded.

Killing terrorists and sacrificing yourself to stop those who kill innocents in markets and buses is a worthy cause. Cheap and worthless deaths are of those who commit suicide in order to kill innocents. Can a death get any more worthless then suicide?

well, I am not questioning your zeal to take on the terrorist, neither am I supporting either.

However, one must question why these soldiers are being treated as nothing more than cannon fodder; while these brave soldiers are laying their lives for a "cause", the corrupt generals are neglecting to mention even their names and highlighting their sacrifices ..any opinion on this?
