I'm not going to comment on the fastfood halal/haraam debate, but i just want to say one thing:
Some of you are seriously naive.
"i'd rather buy food from a desi fast food place where i know it's halal..."
Really?....I mean REALLY?! How do you know it's halal and WHY do you trust them so readily? Oh i know: The "786" sign above the entrance door? The actual word "halal" in Arabic on the shop sign? Or is it the desi faces working behind the shop counter?
Do you go out of your way to find out where THEIR meat is sourced from? How it's slaughtered? Whether it is certified by the HFA/HMC?
Food for thought.
Actually its not that difficult to chase up if you live in a Muslim populated area. Local business usually buy their meat from local butchers who have links with local slaughter houses. In my town we have a slaughter house owned by a Muslim and all the local butchers buy their meat from him. So we can be sure that Alhamdulilah the meat is Halaal.
I think local Masajid should be involved in such research and therefore should support local Halaal butchers and other food business. It's not a one man job but the concern of the entire local community.
My sister lives in a village in which the Muslim population is next to none. She usually buys her meat from our town when she comes to visit. There are a few Muslim owned restaurants in her nearby city but she says none of them are Halaal. In fact the owner of this one Turkish restaurant was quite honest and admitted that they do not use Halaal meat because its not available locally.
I think if your local butchers are reliable honest people, they will not deceive you as it is their concern just as much as yours. Also it would be wrong to not trust a person who is respected and known to be honest and reliable in the community. Although this is not to say that it shouldn't be each person's priority to investigate for themselves.
Also, the story of Abu Bakr is a great lesson for us. His daughter Aishah narrated that Abubakr's slave brought him his meal as usual. It was not Abu bakr's habit to ask him where he got it from, as he was certain that it is from his own halal earnings. One day, as usual, he got him something to eat and Abubakr ate it without asking about its source. The slave asked, "Do you know what this is?" He replied "What?" The slave answered, "In my days of ignorance, I once did some acts of magic for a person, although I had no idea how to do it, but I managed to cheat him. Only now did he reward me for it, and I bought you something to eat from it." Abu Bakr immediately put his hand in his mouth and vomited everything that he had eaten until his stomach was empty.
