Divided opposition deepens the Syrian tragedy – Opinion – ABC Religion & Ethics (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

For months now, Syria has been in the grip of violence. Civilians are being tortured and killed by the armed forces; government repression has reached unbearable levels and, for now at least, it appears unstoppable.

**The great foreign powers - Russia and China on one side, the United States, the Arab and European countries on the other - are unable to find a solution, much less agree on a way to put an end to the killings. The UN is helpless and the rest of the world looks on passively.
**
Anyone who dares to speak out or to write about Syria’s predicament is certain to be attacked by both sides. For some, to call for the end of Bashar al Assad’s regime means support for America and Israel against the Muslims (especially the Shiites), the Iranians and ultimately the Palestinians. On the internet and social networks, the attacks are particularly vehement: to support the opposition is considered a sign of dangerous political naivety at best, and at worse represents an act of high treason. “Our enemies are supporting the protesters,” they claim, “so we should support the enemies of our enemies!” Hence, the only choice is to take the regime’s side.

But in politics as well as on questions of human rights, the enemies of our enemies are not necessarily our friends. It is quite obvious that the Americans, the Europeans and the Israelis have changed their position: initially they wanted reform within the regime, and now they are demanding that Bashar al Assad to step down. It is no less obvious that they are in touch with opposition groups and leaders in an attempt to secure their interests in the region.

The Western powers and Israel are not passive spectators: they are trying to remain in control, whereas the Russians and Chinese are working to attain a more effective presence in the Middle East on several fronts.

All this is common knowledge.** The shape of the new emerging Middle East is a matter of great concern in the light of recent events in Libya, Iraq, Yemen, Lebanon and the constant pressure on Iran, where the potential of an attack is quite high.**

It would be dangerously short-sighted to accept at face value the kindly and humanistic intentions of the United States or China, of the European countries, of Israel and Russia towards the Arab peoples in general and the Syrians in particular. The lives of Syrians only have value insofar as they represent certain economic and geostrategic interests - no more, no less.

This much being said, is the only remaining solution to remain silent and to support Bashar’s regime? He, like his father, is a dictator who has ordered the murder of thousands of civilians and tortured their opponents without mercy. These are facts, and no sound heart and mind could support such tyrants and cruel despots. This tyranny must come to an end. Bashar al Assad should be arrested and judged. His is the record of a madman.

This is not a call for foreign intervention. Few have been fooled by the Libyan operation of securing oil before people. The self-styled “international community” should take a clear stand and put pressure on the regime to stop the repression - an unlikely outcome, it is true.

In reality, it is the task of the Syrian opposition forces to arrive at a minimum agreement and to organize a strong united front that will lead the country towards pluralism, democracy and freedom. Surely this is the most pressing and difficult challenge the Syrians face today. There can be no other way to convince the world that there exists a true democratic alternative to the current tyrannical regime.

This means working with a broad spectrum of supporters and partners in America, Europe, the Arab world and Asia. In the long run it will be the ability of a Syrian opposition to chart a course through today’s multi-polar world order that will secure strong multilateral support for their legitimate resistance.

Such a possibility seems, I’ll admit, far away. The competing opposition councils together with the Arab League, the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) and an activist Turkish foreign policy seem to be operating according to the old parameters against which no solution seems to possible. The future is bleak.

In the meantime every day in Homs, Hama and throughout Syria, civilians are being humiliated, tortured and killed. The guilt of this regime cries out - but so too does our silence.

The predicament is that now if a person supports the opposition he is labelled as a supporter of Zionist agendas, and if he supports Bashar's government he is labelled as supporter of Bashar the murderer.

Re: U.S. preparing missile strike on Syria as evidence mounts of chemical weapon use

Nice pro assad propaganda having killed over 100,000 people this not enough for you, now you have the audacity to claim chemical missile attacks with pinpoint precsion on specific towns in Damascus was done by the resistance forces who defending the people?

You clearly support the mad dictator Assad but know this Assad will fall and the people will have the victory if they fighting for sake of Allah s.w.t

Re: U.S. preparing missile strike on Syria as evidence mounts of chemical weapon use

I don't believe anyone here is fighting for the sake of Allah, everybody is fighting for their victory, supremacy over other, independence etc.

so sick of US acting as world police and disappointed with US citizens not standing up against their state foreign interventions. military intervention will only make things worse not only for Syrians but for the rest of middle east as well. How could they just bypass security council and disregard diplomatic track? I don't understand how can military intervention can bring back peace and stability in Syria? When Obama speaks about limited/surgical strikes, who is he fooling? there will loss of many civilians lives without any doubt. can only hope and pray that that some common sense prevails and peace is given a chance.

Re: U.S. preparing missile strike on Syria as evidence mounts of chemical weapon use

Why do you guys think the West is getting involved in Syria, what is their agenda?
If they attack Assad they will be on the same side as many Sunni Muslims who see the rebels as heroes. However many Muslims will say the Americans are anti Muslim so why are they getting involved?

Re: U.S. preparing missile strike on Syria as evidence mounts of chemical weapon use

I'd choose US over Assad. Just like some would choose US over Taliban/AlQaeda.

Re: U.S. preparing missile strike on Syria as evidence mounts of chemical weapon use

So there's no al Qaeda in Syria? News to me.

Re: U.S. preparing missile strike on Syria as evidence mounts of chemical weapon use

Watch this space why you think US turkey Saudi Qatar have not delivered the promised weapons?

The vast majority of what is called the resistance want to establish shariah and islamic state in Syria. The west scared to hell of this and label them terrorist since day 1 but Assad who killed over 100k people chemically bombed the civilians he given time, excuse and even more time to finish his genocide By UN Obama regime Russia etc.

Re: U.S. preparing missile strike on Syria as evidence mounts of chemical weapon use

I can't believe that after getting be-fooled by AlQaida in Pakistan/Afghanistan people are falling for it in Syria.

Re: U.S. preparing missile strike on Syria as evidence mounts of chemical weapon use

Could anyone answer the question particularly those who support the Sunni rebels. If the west is so anti Muslim then why are they planning to attack Assad?

Re: U.S. preparing missile strike on Syria as evidence mounts of chemical weapon use

We know from previous situations and examples the US has an agenda to bring in new client regime into Syria.

Assad been using scud missiles, barrel bombs, tank shells, torture for 2 years why the US decide move now? Killing is killing whether by chemical or scud missile.

John Kerry met Russian counterpart in US embassy Brunei on 2nd July they agreed to in effect arrange for new client state in line with thier Geneva 2 agreement which will take place in September 2013.

You expect us to trust a nation responsible for horrors of Guantanamo bay, Bagram, and Abu Ghraib. Spying on whole world. Their own nuclear and biological crimes.Vietnam, Hiroshima and Nagasaki to
Iraq and Afghanistan etc have the scars of this sudden humanitarian side of US.

So no I don't believed this is just attack to save humanity always strings attached.

Re: U.S. preparing missile strike on Syria as evidence mounts of chemical weapon use

Why does America want to impose regime change in Syria and Iran but not against Saudi or Qatar? is it because the former are the only threat to Israel and the latter simply only have a loud bark but no bite?

Re: U.S. preparing missile strike on Syria as evidence mounts of chemical weapon use

Not sure about Russia but the vibes that I am getting is that Iran is fully committed to the defence of Syria, and it would retaliate at a time and place of its choosing. This thing could unfold in unexpected ways. The stakes are high both for Iran and Russia.
